Just realised I am a film philistine - dire need of suggestions!

It's only just dawned on me... some friends were talking about favourite films and I had seen barely any of the ones mentioned! Not sure how this happened.. we rented videos regularly when I was a child but the rental place closed down when I was around 10 and from then on I mainly just watched tv series. But now I've reached the ripe old age of 29 and realised I've seen hardly any films that are not musicals or children's films 😳
Any suggestions? They don't need to be the best films of all time, just anything you enjoyed. When I google 'best films to watch' the lists are very highbrow... it's not that I don't want to watch anything serious, it's just I want to watch it because it's enjoyable/moving rather than because it was groundbreaking at the time iyswim. Obvious suggestions welcome as there's a high chance I won't have seen it. Only recently saw Titanic for the first time 😬

I have watched and really enjoyed:
Billy Elliot, Stand by Me, Brassed Off, Knives Out, Brooklyn, East is East, Devil Wears Prada, Saving Mr Banks, Mean Girls, Shutter Island, Bridget Jones, Father of the Bride, Planes trains and automobiles, Schindler's List, The Pianist..
..and not a whole lot else!

Thanks @minsmum , I did want to see some older films! And I see John Cusack's in Grosse Point Blank 😍

There are some great ones already mentioned.

I'd add The English Patient and Lawrence of Arabia. Also, 2001 and the original 1960s Planet of the Apes. And Children of Men, 12 Years a Slave (don't miss this one!), Fiddler on the Roof.

salamithumbs · 03/11/2023 21:02

@FirstFallopians it's ridiculous because in primary school everyone was either team Harry Potter or team Lord of the Rings.. I felt I couldn't watch Lord of the Rings or I'd be betraying Harry Potter😂 time to get over it methinks!

Thanks @Manadou I actually love a bit of opera! My biggest gripe with the greatest showman was the "opera singer" doing a pop performance 😂

Adding to what everyone else has said:
Lion
Slumdog millionaire
Erin Brokovitch
War Horse - not sure if it’s meant for children but I watched as an adult and nearly cried, parts of it are really sad.

What about animated films? Like Persepolis, Princess Mononoke or Grave of the fireflies (I watched that thinking how sad can an animated film be? More fool me!)

salamithumbs · 03/11/2023 21:38

Thanks @NoraLuka , I did see Slumdog Millionaire! Brilliant film. Definitely not opposed to an animated film, I just thought I'd seen most of them since I've seen a lot of disney, pixar, and ones like Anastasia, An American Tail etc. But I definitely relate to crying at an animated film.. Coco had me in tears and I was definitely an adult when I saw that!

Love a bit of atmospheric music

Then you should love The Third Man. Classic British noir.

Hollywood classics - almost anything with Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davis or Claude Rains.

Westerns - John Wayne in Stagecoach, Rio Bravo and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. (People may have other preferences, but those are my favourites.)

This Happy Breed - about an ordinary London family between the wars.

Great Expectations with John Mills.

StuckintheUSA · 03/11/2023 22:44

Just thought of another couple:
Argo - great film directed by Ben Affleck
Interstellar - great sci-fi film.

salamithumbs · 03/11/2023 23:11

That's a great idea @BlueStockingTimes , don't know why I didn't think of it! Thanks for the suggestions x

For years DH and I have both liked anything with Ricardo Darín or Sergi López. They are our favourite film actors.
