Films

Just realised I am a film philistine - dire need of suggestions!

It's only just dawned on me... some friends were talking about favourite films and I had seen barely any of the ones mentioned! Not sure how this happened.. we rented videos regularly when I was a child but the rental place closed down when I was around 10 and from then on I mainly just watched tv series. But now I've reached the ripe old age of 29 and realised I've seen hardly any films that are not musicals or children's films 😳
Any suggestions? They don't need to be the best films of all time, just anything you enjoyed. When I google 'best films to watch' the lists are very highbrow... it's not that I don't want to watch anything serious, it's just I want to watch it because it's enjoyable/moving rather than because it was groundbreaking at the time iyswim. Obvious suggestions welcome as there's a high chance I won't have seen it. Only recently saw Titanic for the first time 😬

I have watched and really enjoyed:
Billy Elliot, Stand by Me, Brassed Off, Knives Out, Brooklyn, East is East, Devil Wears Prada, Saving Mr Banks, Mean Girls, Shutter Island, Bridget Jones, Father of the Bride, Planes trains and automobiles, Schindler's List, The Pianist..
..and not a whole lot else!

YES @TotalOverhaul I just looked up Purely Belter and saw Tim Healy's in it...aka Billy Elliot's dad from the stage musical... this was meant to be!!

There are so many wonderful films, a lot mentioned here.

I was just thinking, if you like French foreign films, years ago I watched Jean de Florette, then it's sequel Manon de Sources after. I was bawling at the end!
More light hearted is La Cage aux Folles which I remember being very funny.

Also Cinema Paradiso as mentioned.
Life is Beautiful was also amazing, get the tissues ready for both!

I love so many films from every decade. Don't seem to watch as many now as just don't sit and make the time.

Sometimes at night a good film will come on one of the BBC channels, will watch it when everyone's gone to bed.

Point break - has to be the original with Patrick Swayze
Hidden Figures
First wives club
Sunshine cleaning
A few good men

Agree with Dopesick recommended above. Gobsmacking.

Thanks so much for your suggestions @Mouldyfoodhelp , I like a mix of things so I really appreciate the ideas for different genres. I've seen paranormal activity and liked it so will definitely try more horror! Foreign language is a great shout, your post reminded me that I used to watch French and Italian films back when I was learning the languages and really enjoyed films like Les Choristes, Io non ho paura and La Vita e Bella so will google some foreign language lists. I remember watching a French psychological thriller called A la folie, pas du tout and loving it, must rewatch!
Jurassic park is on the list, I've seen a bit of it when it's been on around Christmas but not the whole thing... and yes I've seen Sweeney Tood ;)

We have recently been through a phase of Nanni Moretti. It sounds like you are more film-literate than you let on. I remember once someone at work asked me if I'd seen any films at the weekend, and I said, 'Yes, Man Bites Dog'. She said 'What's that?' I replied 'A black-and white Belgian comedy about a serial killer'. She said 'Only you, Manadou, would like a film like that'. I think you either like Benoît Poelvoorde or you don't. I do, DH doesn't.

salamithumbs · 03/11/2023 20:24

Thanks @ThriceInALifetime will definitely watch those! I know what you mean about not making the time... now that there's so much streaming, there's no sense of urgency in watching a film whereas before I would've watched a film whenever if I saw that it was going to be on tv. On maternity leave now though so determined to get in a few films while the baby is sleeping/feeding! Need to branch out from watching repeats of Friends 😂

Thanks @EwwSprouts , haven't seen them but I loved Patrick Swayze in The Outsiders!

The Hunt for Red October
Bullet Train

Almost anything by Hitchcock.

Some golden age classics are great:

the Philadelphia Story and/or it’s musical version High Society
Gypsy
West Side Story
His Girl Friday
Casablanca
Citizen Kane
The Maltese Falcon
Mr Smith Goes to Washington
Harvey
Roman Holiday
A Matter of Life and Death (and of course the much later A Matter of Loaf and Death)

Later:
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Blues Brothers
Diva (weird, but wonderful)

Recently, I really enjoyed Living, which I think is now on Netflix, and Rye Lane.

Must add: 'It Happened One Night' to that great list

salamithumbs · 03/11/2023 20:32

Thanks @Manadou , yes I definitely find that some of my favourite films are the more offbeat ones 😂 your post reminded me that I loved an Italian film called Come Dio Comanda about an accidental murder... I only watched it because I'd liked the book but then found that the film was brilliant in a different way! Maybe I have seen more films than I realised... I just feel that recently all I watch is tv series or reruns of the same old stuff! Must make the time to watch a film of an evening, it feels so much more satisfying than watching something I've seen a million times before

Thanks @PictureOfFlorianTray ! I've heard great things about The Hunt for Red October

The proposal

PictureOfFlorianTray · 03/11/2023 20:50

Be warned.. it’s a bit cold to start with.

Manadou · 03/11/2023 20:51

@salamithumbs

Last weekend we watched Una mujer fantástica from Chile, with the excellent Daniela Vega. This being Mumsnet I won't elaborate on the plot except to say that at the end she does a marvellous performance of Ombra mai fu ('Handel's Largo')

titchy · 03/11/2023 20:56

Adding:
Priscilla queen of the desert
The green mile
four lions
Bladerunner
Schindlers list
