Dogs friendly film screenings

My local cinema had a dog friendly showing (I think of Barbie) today. I'd no idea this was a thing. Genuine question - do dogs enjoy being in the cinema with other dogs? Doesn't it just descend into chaos?

I'm not a dog owner as you can probably guess.

were taking our 2 next week! glad to know they enjoyed it can't wait now. ours love some popcorn

I'm sure you'll have fun! Actually, the popcorn on all sides were the biggest challenge for my greedy pup

I was wondering if it was just Barbie, but no. What on earth would a dog make of Oppenheimer!?

@snygghygge thank you - that's really helpful to know.

I’m a dog lover. It’s getting ridiculous now. Went out for Sunday lunch today and couldn’t get to my table without asking couple next to me to move their large Labrador. The waitress was quite clearly irritated she could not serve us properly due to dog being constantly in way. The poor dog has to lie on the floor tied to a table while it’s owners and everyone around much on roast dinner - it was not the dogs fault but the selfish owners - why? Leave it at home - or in the car ! My colleague at work is frightened of dogs she says it’s horrible to go out because they are in all the shops and cafes. These dog owners are being very selfish and not thinking about the dog. Dogs don’t like to go shopping fgs! Or lie in a restaurant - it’s dog abuse

I think Oppenheimer is way too bleak for my pup 😁 Joking aside, it really is just a bit of fun. Of course, no dog really needs to go to the cinema, but mine clearly enjoyed herself

I will never understand the types of owners who feel the need to take their dogs everywhere-shops, restaurants, garden centres and now cinemas. I definitely will be avoiding cinemas that do this because I can guarantee there will be overindulgent owners there that let their dog sit on the seats.
No thank you. Paws on floors.

saraclara · 30/07/2023 19:09

Dogs have become child substitutes, and there seems to be no end to it. Someone over in the dog branch was asking how to potty train her dog earlier.

It's mad. Dog ice creams, dog wardrobes, dog pushchairs, dog birthday cards/cakes/ parties. And now dog cinema showings.

They're dogs. Test then like dogs. Respect them as dogs. Stop treating then like toddlers.

saraclara · 30/07/2023 19:10

Damn. Treat, not test

What do the dogs do? Do they sit by you or explore the cinema, play with the other dogs? And do some sit on the seats? I find that a bit grim if I'm honest, unless they get a good clean afterwards.

@WobblyLondoner

yeah, I'd want to give my dog a good wash after sitting on a cinema seat!!

I've never heard of this until now. I don't actually have a dog at the moment, but my old girl would have loved it. She'd have greeted dogs on the way in, then sat on my knee, cuddled up watching...

my friends dogs I dog sit, would enjoy it, I'd take (clean, hair free) blankets to cover the seats. The both like to watch TV, but they're both too big to sit comfortably in a cinema seat for a long time, so I think they'd end up lying on the floor eating fuck knows what off the floor...so it wouldn't be a good idea! I'd rather stay home with them!

another friend has a dog that she's not trained to stay home alone 🥹 as much as I love him, it's limiting. It would mean we could go to the movies together.

Im not sure it's something that's a great idea tbh.

I'm one of those dog owners who loves to take my dog along when possible. She's a reasonably well-behaved terrier, I take her to a very serious training class every weekend. I live in the middle of a big city, so my dog actually needs to be able to behave herself in an urban setting. When I took her along to doggie cinema yesterday, we were all handed a blanket to place on the seat and I can assure you that everybody used those blankets whether their dogs were in the seats or lying on the floor

Bunsandtophats · 30/07/2023 19:16

Someone does this to train a dog to passively rest....!? This has got me 😆

forgivingfiggy · 30/07/2023 19:16

It's really ridiculous now. Leave your bloody dogs at home. I have two of them. They don't want to go to the cinema/a food festival/ to a restaurant.

sewerrat · 30/07/2023 19:18

VeridicalVagabond · 30/07/2023 19:01

I have three couch potato dogs who would probably love to go sit in a comfy chair in the dark for a few hours with me, but FFS they can do that at home. I can't think of a single reason I'd want to take my dogs to the cinema. They can watch Doggy TV at home while I go see Barbie. Why do dogs need to go everywhere???

If your dog can't be left home for a couple of hours while you to to the cinema you have failed to train your dog and shouldn't own one.

you also could just sit in the dark at home but clearly you want the experience, why can't dogs have that too?

Because they're fucking dogs.

higher in the food chain than you are

More dogs get eaten annually by humans than humans get eaten by dogs, so no actually, they're not.

Iheartmysmart · 30/07/2023 19:24

DDog tends to snore through most films at home so he’d probably be the same at the cinema. He’s rather partial to a bit of popcorn though. Not sure what he’d make of 4DX showings!

Carsarelife · 30/07/2023 19:24

Never heard of this but it sounds bloody brilliant.

sewerrat · 30/07/2023 19:18

You honestly think that a dog will experience, understand, and enjoy the film and the cinema experience like you do?

Dogs are not human beings. They're animals. They enjoy different things from humans. Stop treating your dog as if it's a child. Give it, and its instincts, the respect it deserves

BiscuitsandPuffin · 30/07/2023 19:25

I think a certain "type" of dog owner is doing themselves no favours by conditioning themselves to regress to a childlike state where they need their cuddly toy (which is actually a living breathing animal with its own thoughts and feelings) to go everywhere with them.

And I say that as a dog owner. Dogs are not dummies/security blankets for adults!

Maztek · 30/07/2023 19:26

Gosh there’s some fucking saddos in the world 🤣

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 30/07/2023 19:27

Unless it’s a special dog cinema with films like they show on Sunday Brunch (Petflix) then I can’t see this working. You’d have to be ensure seats in a normal cinema are cleaned of hair and slobber.

Can I have a cat cinema for my cat?

Maharajah20 · 30/07/2023 19:27
