Richard Curtis said Love Actually needed more diversity

He's obviously not able to recall the film at all.

I'm watching it now, ten minutes in and we've had two black 10 Downing Street employees, a black man marrying a white woman, a full gospel choir, a black saucy film director and a very diverse set of wedding guests.

Later on I'm sure there's a gay relationship and mental health issues, and a biracial kid singing All I Want For Christmas Is You.

What exactly is he moaning about?

I've never seen it but love that take down that does the rounds every year. Female writer who absolutely eviscerates the plot and characters in a very funny way.

Also I wonder where it sits on the Bechdel scale.

Glad to see someone has posted the hilarious review already.

I suspect when Richard Curtis talks about diversity he's thinking less of race and more of sexuality and gender.

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/12/2022 20:13

And Actually (get it?) there is diversity in some ways. How often is women's care work seen, especially with a violent person? How often is a middle-aged woman's reaction to her husband's affair? Bereavement?

I wonder who edited out the storyline with the lesbian couple? Because RC was extremely powerful. If he's wanted it there, rather than the weird US stuff, it would have been.

I suspect when Richard Curtis talks about diversity he's thinking less of race and more of sexuality and gender.

He could also be talking about disabilities or differently abled people.

I actually love Love Actually Blush

Although I agree with whoever said they should have kept the headmistress and her partner and ditched Colin

Yutes · 04/12/2022 20:14

Could’ve ditched Colin the cockwomble and Uncle Jamie tbh

Yutes · 04/12/2022 20:14

Or actually the weird Martin Freeman body double plot. It makes me feel a bit weird.

He screwed up the wedding video. Not sure that was forgivable!

He didn't have anything to do with the wedding video, he was asked for extra footage because the video was already "screwed up".

Mrsjayy · 04/12/2022 20:24

Wasn't Bill.Nighy assistant in love with him wasn't that the gay plot ?

It’s been a long time since I watched it, I thought he was the unofficial video maker who only filmed Keira Knightly.

Yeah he was a stand in that only creepily filmed Kiera Knightly

lollyloo88 · 04/12/2022 20:36

Wow who really cares about a film from nearly 20 years ago. If it offends anyone because it's 'diverse, but not diverse enough' they need to have a strong drink and chill out!

He wasn't even a stand in, but he was the creepy friend that only filmed the bride.

It's an awful film no matter who is in it.

This ! I’ve never understood the hype of Love actually - absolute drivel.

I always thought the denouement of that story was they loved each other but weren't gay - just two men who realised they were probably the best friend each other had - a significant other without a sexual relationship.

PermanentTemporary · 04/12/2022 22:08

LA needs a lot of things, preferably to be completely forgotten.

Ah OK I get that.

I'm glad I posted this. Interesting discussion thanks everyone.

I LOVE that Lindy West review. I showed it to a friend and we were howling. "Keira Knightley, wearing an unacceptable hat," FATALIE HUNGRY and the cockblocktopus have all made their way into our everyday speech.

LlynTegid · 06/12/2022 12:02

Love Actually needed a decent script.

Can’t believe it’s a Love Actually thread and no one’s posted the Jezebel article yet. jezebel.com/i-rewatched-love-actually-and-am-here-to-ruin-it-for-al-1485136388/amp

My SIL made me watch Love Actually this Xmas (after 19 years of dodging it!) saying it wouldn't be a proper Xmas without it...

Everything in the Jezebel article hit me like a ton of bricks AND YET the most mysterious thing is not that a shit bloated awful woman-hating film got made - shit films get made all the time! - it's that almost 20 years later a LOT of women are still claiming they love it.

I despair.

VioletLemon · 29/12/2022 14:11

Not enough TWAW, NB's, 2 Spirits and Unicorns.....

Totally agree.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 29/12/2022 14:48

@lollyloo88 Richard Curtis seems to care hence it appeared in the press and I discussed it as I'd just watched it and was interested in opinions as, you know, it's been in the news. That ok with you?
