Richard Curtis said Love Actually needed more diversity

He's obviously not able to recall the film at all.

I'm watching it now, ten minutes in and we've had two black 10 Downing Street employees, a black man marrying a white woman, a full gospel choir, a black saucy film director and a very diverse set of wedding guests.

Later on I'm sure there's a gay relationship and mental health issues, and a biracial kid singing All I Want For Christmas Is You.

What exactly is he moaning about?

My sis just reported that she has watched LA for the first tie with her kids ad they all loved it. FGS it's like a fungal infection.

Has RC got a new film coming out? They usually start saying anything for attention when they've got new crap to flog.

I really hope for a change that it is a film about a well meaning but quirky and socially awkward public school type and their eclectic circle of middle class friends who despite seemingly being all rubbish at their day jobs and driving about town in barely working ancient British classic cars they can all afford to live in large Georgian houses with brightly coloured front doors in a leafy well heeled part of London and indulge in shabby chic designer wardrobes.

It needed less keira knightley. Thank fuck she's sunk to obscurity.

I was really irritated by her in this.

I'm irritated by her in everything she in.

Look at Friends. At the time its portrayal of non-heterosexual relationships was lauded. Now my teen can’t watch it because it’s too insensitive.

They sound like a bit of a wet lettuce. Can they cope with any pre-2010 stuff at all, or is it just "Friends" they find too much to handle?

I think she was very young in Love Actually, only 17 or 18. A bit off, then, having Andrew Lincoln having the hots for her.

I agree. It's really pathetic.

there Is a trend to evaluate older television and films by today’s standards. I don’t believe that is fair. Casting rules today are very different than they were 20 years ago. Standards change and that is good, but we can’t judge productions completely retroactively.

Look at Star Trek. In its day, it was progressive on both racism and sexism. By today’s standards, it is absolutely antiquated. That doesn’t change the fact that it was ground-breaking television that pushed boundaries and increased acceptance for minorities and women.

Look at Friends. At the time its portrayal of non-heterosexual relationships was lauded. Now my teen can’t watch it because it’s too insensitive.

But LA was shit when it came out precisely because of the misogyny. I spent hours ranting after leaving the cinema. Remember it well, for all the wrong reasons a

One thing that Jezebel doesn't explicitly point out is that every 'love story' has a woman roughly half the age than the man in the couple.

Keira Knightley was 17 when they filmed it - Chewitel Ejiofor was 28, Andrew Lincoln 30.
Colin Firth was 43, his Portuguese silent maid/slave was 26.
Alan Rickman was 57 and the actress playing his secretary was 29.
Hugh Grant was 43 and Martine McCutcheon was 26.

Richard Curtis is a massive creep, basically.

ImAvingOops · 30/12/2022 09:14

KK was 17 but the character was maybe meant to be in her early 20s. I don't think her age is mentioned in the film.
I don't understand the 'Andrew Lincoln character is a creepy stalker' pov. To me, he's a man who just liked a girl that he couldn't pursue, did everything he could to avoid her and when she found out, he said how he felt but then drew a line under it and moved on. Focusing on her in the wedding video doesn't constitute creepy behaviour. He was a shit friend maybe, but not a creep!

ImAvingOops · 30/12/2022 09:15

The Colin thing was creepy though. That storyline has not aged well.
