I watched this last night and can’t stop mulling it over.

It’s received mixed reviews but I loved it. Apparently it was written before the pandemic and was originally an allegory about global warming but they made edits based on recent times during the pandemic. Some of it hits quite close to home tbh.

Yes, it made me think about how little we know about what really happens and the way news is "managed".
I thought it was going to be a comedy at first, but by the end felt quite tearful, seeing the shots of people plants and animals and thinking how much was being destroyed

Cornettoninja · 25/12/2021 15:49

The last fifteen minutes or so do slap you in a face a bit don’t they? The tone of the rest of the film is quite light. It’s a clever tool and intentional I’m sure, but it does land quite differently after the last couple of years.

I said to my DP that I’ve seen loads of memes talking about how we can’t really have disaster movies showing America saving the day given lived experience lately. I think this is the first film I’ve watched since then that has recognised the shift in americas identity.

Just watched it. I thought it was great. Fun satire with a poignant ending.

The message won't be heard by those that need to hear it though.

Bluntness100 · 25/12/2021 19:54

I thought it was quite good, very watchable. Not great. It wasn’t deep though, and certainly not enough to make me sit and ponder the future. But it did make me laugh out loud at points.

LemonMuffins · 25/12/2021 19:57

We started it yesterday but thought it was awful so gave up after half an hour. I was surprised to hate it so much given the cast.

ReginaaPhalange · 25/12/2021 19:57

Honestly? It started off good but it lost my attention by the time Jennifer Lawrence's character ended working in the liquor store. I couldn't get back into it then. Can't stand Jonah hill so that doesn't help. Was gutted Matthew Perry's role was cut!

AlinaSquareQueen · 25/12/2021 21:00

I watched this earlier today, and absolutely loved it. My DS (age 26), however didn’t particularly enjoy it. We do have very different tastes though.

There were plenty of laugh out loud moments, but it was poignant in places too.

I really liked the Tyler Perry/Cate Blanchette characters, but Leonardo DiCaprio can do no wrong in my eyes, and I’d give him the Oscar right now!

I thought I caught a glimpse of Matthew Perry right at the end. Also, where was Chris Evans? I don’t remember seeing him.

My favourite film of 2021 - and I watch a lot of films!

BitcherOfBlakiven · 25/12/2021 21:13

I really enjoyed it too, watched it after DDs went to their Dads.

TinyHaus · 25/12/2021 21:19

I really liked this too. Meryl Street was fabulous as usual. It was also really showed how distracted people had generally become. The nerd Bash founder was very relatable as well. Tech corporates puppeteering governments. It was funny but very real. I rewound the end several times. Great film

Faircastle · 25/12/2021 21:24

I'm watching it at the moment, I'm about 3/4 of the way through. I find it quite timely in terms of its observations of government policy being influenced by either how it will affect public opinion or by financial benefit to private corporations. It reminds me a bit of early Black Mirror.
Great cast, too.

Newgirls · 25/12/2021 21:41

I loved it! Very smart film and great cast. Loved mark rylance in this.

What was Matthew Perry’s role meant to be? It prob didn’t need any more characters and could have prob lost Timothy chalamet without any issue

ProudThrilledHappy · 25/12/2021 22:02

It was ok, I think a lot of the montages got wearing. Chris Evans plays the arrogant actor being interviewed about the disaster film near the end, almost didn’t recognise him. I love Jonah Hill in this

Spectre8 · 25/12/2021 22:13

I loved it, funny and so very now. Loved it. Such a different movie from the usual. Definately shows the shift in how America is viewed. Doesn't save the day, its politicians a complete joke, typical way politicians want to be seen to give people hope and good news over real facts and its all about the optics, greed (richer geting richer) and as always benefiting themselves and not humanity.

Christmasmorning519 · 25/12/2021 22:21

Loved it . Didn’t think it had anything to do with global warming though ?

AlinaSquareQueen · 25/12/2021 22:24

@ProudThrilledHappy

Thank you for pointing out the Chris Evans character. I defo didn’t recognise him!

Spectre8 · 25/12/2021 22:25

Where are people getting the idea it was about global warming from? they discovered a coment was going to hit earth......global warming had nothing to do with that! Jesus are people that indoctrined everything is linked back to global warming Grin

AlbertBridge · 25/12/2021 22:30

I love Adam McKay! He's brilliant at capturing how we live. I loved this.

Salome61 · 25/12/2021 22:33

I watched it last night, thought it was great. I also recommend Tom Hanks film 'Finch' on Apple tv.

Faircastle · 25/12/2021 22:36

The comet is an allegory, surely?
PuppyMonkey · 25/12/2021 22:37

We watched this tonight, was a really good laugh I thought.

The Global warming allegory completely passed me by, but I suppose all the stuff with the media/politicians completely ignoring imminent disaster to focus on vacuous celebrity shite or their own agenda etc could be interpreted like that!

crazycatgal · 25/12/2021 22:52

Possibly from people involved in the film that have mentioned it?
Spectre8 · 25/12/2021 22:52

@Faircastle thats how you might decide to see it and the script writers may also have wanted it to be that. However threat of an extinction level event from space is a real possiblity so to get their other points across I think its how I'll take it as a literal reference to that

WallaceinAnderland · 25/12/2021 22:52

@Christmasmorning519

Loved it . Didn’t think it had anything to do with global warming though ?
It's totally about global warming. By the time the people in power try to do anything about global warming, it will be too late. That's the whole point. No one is listening to the scientists who are telling us what WILL happen because governments work on profit. It's happening now and no one is paying any attention. Don't look up.
OneOfTheGrundys · 25/12/2021 22:55

Mark Rylance played a super similar role in Ready Player One. Still fabulous though.

WhistlersandJugglers · 25/12/2021 22:57

I just kept thinking it would all have been fine if they just got Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck's drilling crew up there.
