I watched this last night and can’t stop mulling it over.

It’s received mixed reviews but I loved it. Apparently it was written before the pandemic and was originally an allegory about global warming but they made edits based on recent times during the pandemic. Some of it hits quite close to home tbh.

@WhistlersandJugglers

I just kept thinking it would all have been fine if they just got Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck's drilling crew up there.
I said exactly the same thing as I was watching it! Where's Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck when you need them!
partystress · 25/12/2021 23:10

Agree it was completely about climate change. I loved it. Straight into my top 5 films of all time. Timothee Chalomet was vital. His prayer at the dinner table was a kind of last rite for humanity.

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 25/12/2021 23:14

We loved it.

FloellaDaVille · 25/12/2021 23:16

Make sure that you watch it right through to the end. Halfway through the ending credits there's a bit more and it's worth watching to see what happens to those who left the earth!

Also the very end of the credits too! A wee scene wIth Jonah Hill

I loved it and burst into tears at the end (I'm a bit hormonal at the mo). Can't believe the mixed reviews.

Did anybody else not recognise Cate Blanchett until about a third into the film?

Christmasmorning519 · 26/12/2021 00:34

@WallaceinAnderland. Fair enough, I see what you mean . I literally took it to mean an asteroid . A valuable one at that.

MarineBlue33 · 26/12/2021 00:38

Fantastic cast and great acting but how depressing to put an apolyptic film on Christmas Eve. Was hoping for a good ending

MajesticWhine · 26/12/2021 00:41

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I too was waiting for Bruce Willis to go and kick some comet ass, but it was actually a good ending and better that America didn't save the world.

PrinzessinCressida · 26/12/2021 00:48

OP, we watched it last night and I LOVED it. DH and DC loved it less, but didn't hate it.

If anything, I thought the global warming allegory was too obvious. The pandemic references were also there although less obvious.

It has also stayed with me. The thing that I found equally fascinating and disturbing was the satire on the speed of the modern news cycle, audiences' short attention span and manipulation, reputation management being king, media's breathtaking shallowness, rampant greed, shameless corruption, the all-encompassing power of money... And how very accurate and actually not satirical at all it all felt. It was actually a little frightening to see how utterly fucked we are.

Yes, I felt the only right ending was the one they gave us.

Both Mark and Care had prosthetic teeth, didn't they? The blinding neon whiteness made me think of The Hunger Games.

GetInThereLewis · 26/12/2021 00:52

Jennifer Lawrence pulls some brilliant "WTAF" faces throughout.

She really does!
BuddhaAtSea · 26/12/2021 09:50

I absolutely loved it, I watched it yesterday. Really funny and close to the bone. A very very clever film, I’ll watch it again.
And do you know what, I didn’t recognise Cate Blanchett 😂😂😂

LaurieFairyCake · 26/12/2021 10:00

I wanted to watch this but haven't yet - is there any animal peril in it ? I don't watch animals getting hurt or killed

Anyone let me know?

Christmasmorning519 · 26/12/2021 10:04

I spent most of the Kate Blanchett scenes thinking the actor looked a bit like Kate Blanchett every now and again. Grin

UserBot · 26/12/2021 10:07

I couldn't believe that news anchor turned out to be cate blanchett. Even though I knew she was in it Confused. Her hair was too blonde, her skin was too brown. It was very well done. She just looked so plastic in it. Not her usual natural self at all.

Matthew Perry was in it too apparently, never saw him.

sashagabadon · 26/12/2021 10:07

I loved it too and might rewatch.

No animal peril at all that I can remember

Great summary. It was also very funny, I loved the skater gang and their conspiracy discussion.
JosephineDeBeauharnais · 26/12/2021 10:12

We enjoyed it but read it straight as being a pandemic allegory rather than climate change (not having seen anything about it beforehand). It was clearly going to be a big political statement piece based on the very weighty cast.

Yeah, pretty well every living animal perishes.
Christmasmorning519 · 26/12/2021 10:13

Missed the pandemic references as well as the global warming one. Didn’t recognise Chris Evans. I clearly need to watch it again .
I have not seen a film quite like this one before. Googled the director for ideas of what else to watch and they are classic movies I’ve just never liked. I find A typical Will Ferral character really annoying . Can’t stand Elf for this very reason.

Christmasmorning519 · 26/12/2021 10:17

@LaurieFairyCake. Nothing remotely gratuitous or lingering regarding animal peril so you are safe to watch . In fact , you will probably love the irony of the very last scene. Grin

PuppyMonkey · 26/12/2021 10:18

I think Cate Blanchett had a set of false teeth in didn’t she? Completely changed her appearance. And something different about the nose?

Same with Mark Rylance actually!
