I watched this last night and can’t stop mulling it over.

It’s received mixed reviews but I loved it. Apparently it was written before the pandemic and was originally an allegory about global warming but they made edits based on recent times during the pandemic. Some of it hits quite close to home tbh.

It’s a very big sign of what the people would say if it was really happening

Maybe that’s what’s unsettled me. I think when this was originally wrote it was very much in a satire ‘the onion’ style, now it’s wholly believable that this could be the reaction.

I also thought Elon Musk

I got more of a Zuckerberg/Bezos vibe.

The idea of the Mark Rylance IT character coming into save the day with an obvious hair brained idea and how politicians (and the public) are in awe of them reminded me a little of Elon musk and the boys in the cave. The actual divers who knew what to do and had a plan were briefly pushed to one side as Musk suggested a submarine to rescue the boys (on Twitter Hmm) despite the twisting tight corners of the exit route. When told by actual experts his plan was rubbish he turned on the divers and called them peadophiles!
Imagine if everyone had seriously listened to Musk’s idea and let him take over the rescue Shock
It would have been a disaster.

duvetdayforeveryone · 26/12/2021 19:21

Loved it... until I realised it could actually happen and freaked out a little.

RunningInTheWind · 26/12/2021 19:27

I’m glad I read this thread and stuck through the subtitles because it did indeed end on a ha ha note.

I watched Armageddon today as a sort of counterbalance!

Cornettoninja · 26/12/2021 19:41

@sashagabadon I’d forgotten about that, he really is something special isn’t he?

I watched it today and enjoyed it. Was anyone else surprised by the age of Leonard diCaprio's sons? I guess we're so used to watching films with men in their late 40's married to younger women and with small children.

viques · 26/12/2021 19:43

We watched it and really enjoyed it. Some very black humour, which we enjoyed but also some pertinent comments on how governments deal with issues. Great cast too, didn’t recognise Mark Rylance with those teeth!

Loved the ending!

Watapalava · 26/12/2021 19:43

Honestly i thought it was worst film ive seen in years

Coconutmeg · 26/12/2021 19:50

Mark Rylance’s character struggling to speak properly because of all the work he’d had done on his teeth Grin

Watch right til the end of the credits.

viques · 26/12/2021 19:50

@LaurieFairyCake

I wanted to watch this but haven't yet - is there any animal peril in it ? I don't watch animals getting hurt or killed

Anyone let me know?

They refer to dinosaur extinction several times.
DinoDinner · 26/12/2021 19:51

@YourenutsmiLord

I only watched the first 15 mins or so - edgy Phd student (pink hair and doc martens so very edgy) and autistic prof want to save the world but being thwarted at every turn by arrogant white, selfish middle aged people in business suits.............. I'll have to take people's word for it that it improved after that.

It didn't! And the ending was so obvious, especially when the president asked how she was going to die!

Really didn't enjoy it. Reminded me of my Baptist Sunday School, ramming their message down your throat in pretty pictures.

Voice0fReason · 26/12/2021 20:26

We loved it.
The parallels to climate change were clear.
People (particularly those in power) ignoring the evidence, refusing to believe what is right in front of them, because they don't want to have to spend money.
It was funny with an underlying poignant message at the same time.

Scrowy · 26/12/2021 21:11

Hmm.

I enjoyed it on a purely 'entertainment' level. Much the same as Independence Day or similar. Frustrated that apparently only a handful of American people were the only ones interested in getting the truth out.

It had bypassed me it was a political point, which it clearly was now i've read this thread . It also makes sense now given the heavyweight cast for an otherwise, (whispers) 'on the mediocre side' film. Now I've understood that it's supposed to be about global warming It all makes a bit more sense but I'm usually pretty good at spotting this stuff without mumsnet needing to tell me so I think others will also struggle.

I did enjoy the scenes mid and end of credits. Definitely watch right to the very end!

Yes! I remember this. I wondered if Isherwell's complex plan with the comet was a dig at that submarine thing. The poor expert guy was humiliated by the paedo comments, and worse, if I remember correctly - didn't he sue and lost?
AnyFucker · 26/12/2021 22:43

I assumption was Isherrwell was based on Elon Musk. I could see many other possible parallels too.

Although interestingly, in the credits there was a prominent disclaimer that any characters were based on RL people Smile

MsTSwift · 26/12/2021 23:52

Excellent watch with teens. What do you mean no animal peril?! Every animal on earth was annihilated!

bellamountain · 26/12/2021 23:55

I enjoyed the film, hasn't Tamwar done well for himself! Feel sad Matthew Perry had his scene cut.

I could see the message straight off.

Frazzled2207 · 27/12/2021 00:02

@Christmasmorning519

Loved it . Didn’t think it had anything to do with global warming though ?
Was a huge metaphor for climate change. Really surprised it wasn’t more obvious.
notimagain · 27/12/2021 00:08

Well it might be a metaphor (as is claimed by those involved in the production of the film) but OTOH…..

APurpleSquirrel · 27/12/2021 00:16

Watched it tonight with DH & enjoyed it. Good cast, & very on the nose.
You should also check out Prof Brian Cox talking about the film on YouTube, he goes a bit into the science etc & how difficult it is for science to be believed in the current climate & how nations need to plan for these things - hammers the point home even more!

stayathomer · 27/12/2021 00:26

Hated it, putting it in the 'there's X time I'll never get back' category, but I knew from the cast what I was buying into, I knew it would be a narrative on how we're all ignoring the science and effing ourselves and need to consider what's important. I might have liked it a bit more if it wasn't practically the only adult tv I got to watch before going back to work but now I just keep wondering why I didn't get more sleep instead! Also pissed off because we watched Encanto yesterday with the kids and I could have slept through that too!! Dh loved it

I thought that about Leo's kids abs I was pleasantly surprised by it. It wasn't the best film I've ever watched but I enjoyed it. Loved Jennifer's facial expressions and swearing outbursts, watching the lack of action by the president etc was so frustrating & it's hard to imagine how you'd react. I liked that, as many PPs have said, many issues were touched upon - female being hysterical vs male calm & collected, news being there to entertain not inform, people believing what they are fed by the media. I loved Jonah Hill's character, his childish responses made me laugh. However I was annoyed at how Leo's wife forgave & forgot. Seemed a waste of her LTB in the first place!
