A Castle for Christmas

I'm not the biggest fan of the cheesy Netflix Christmas film but I quite enjoyed this one! Brooke Shields is charming and Cary Elwes does well as the curmudgeonly duke. I had a massive crush on him in his Lady Jane/Princess Bride heyday!

And Scotland looks gorgeous, though I'm not sure how realistic the depiction of the Highland village is! In fact I suspect it wasn't even filmed in the Highlands, but it's a fun way to kill 90 mins on a cold night.

Quite enjoyed the film earlier this afternoon, about a journalist looking for the Christmas spirit.

Starcaller · 27/11/2021 19:07

This sounds just the ticket for a miserable night like tonight!

escapingthecity · 27/11/2021 19:08

I can't wait to watch this! Anticipating a full house of Hollywood Scotland bingo - haggis, whisky, bagpipes, coos, incomprehensible Scots....

Christmaspanties · 27/11/2021 19:09

Sounds lovely OP. Is it on tv or cinema only?

Starcaller · 27/11/2021 19:16

Netflix!

There's even a dog called Hamish.
LaChatte · 27/11/2021 19:22

Would it be suitable for a young 12yo?

LaChatte · 27/11/2021 19:23

(Looking for stuff to watch with DD)

IcelandicCabin · 27/11/2021 19:24

Oh sounds brilliant! I have asked for netflix for christmas (DH is a modern tech refuser.....) so i am storing up ideas. I adore a cheesy christmas movie and love Brooke shields.

SandysMam · 27/11/2021 19:25

Really enjoyed it. Pretty cheesy but lovely scenery, very Christmassy and nice to see an older leading lady. Brooke Shields was absolutely stunning in it. Nice relaxing film for a winters afternoon snuggle!

ParishSpinster · 27/11/2021 19:25

I loved it. Although there is the usual flexible approach towards geography (Dunbar is east along the coast from Edinburgh).

But I loved it. And may have shouted "say as you wish!" Many times at Wesley Cary Elwes.

JenniferWooley · 27/11/2021 19:26

It was filmed in South Queensferry which is just over the Forth Bridges from me so nowhere near the highlands.

The accents are horrific in all honesty & I've only seen the trailer so not sure I'll bother watching as I'll just get annoyed & I bloody love a cheesy Christmas movie.

KillingMeDeftly · 27/11/2021 20:01

@LaChatte Yes, completely suitable.

The accents are a bit hit and Miss @JenniferWooley but I didn't mind. And I'm pretty sure a Duke who'd been to public school and Oxbridge would not have a Scottish accent!

Was very cheesy but so bad it was good. Geography was very suspect - and I did wonder why she was flying into Edinburgh airport when she was staying in Aberdeenshire.

KillingMeDeftly · 27/11/2021 20:07

Here's a little reminder of Cary in The Princess Bride...😍

I loved Brooke Shields in Jane the Virgin. She seems fun. I’ll be watching this, I think.

keepmoving · 27/11/2021 20:13

Stuck in bed with stomach bug and wanted something to distract without hurting my brain... this did the trick. Unlikely it's the highlight of any of their acting careers but it was harmless fun @LaChatte fine for 12 year old to watch

KillingMeDeftly · 27/11/2021 20:13

She was in a comedy in the 90s called Suddenly Susan that I quite enjoyed. I think she got the role shortly after her guest appearance on Friends. She'd been in showbiz for years even then but I don't think anyone realised she was also funny!

My god, the accents! The drive from Edinburgh to 'Aberdeenshire' via the west coast! Why call it Dun Dunbar? We've taken to saying Glas Glasgow now.

It had us in stitches, rather than offended, but we ended up switching it off.

Wagsandclaws · 27/11/2021 21:14

Awww I love some cheesy Christmas shite 🎄

It won't win any oscars but it is no worse than the holiday - I have just watched it and am feeling all Christmassy 🎄🥰

KillingMeDeftly · 28/11/2021 17:10

🤣🤣

To my shame I assumed that was some sort of Scottish naming convention I'd never heard of before!

It's so bad. So so bad. Having Scottish characters say "cell signal" and "escrow" really annoyed me!

CuriousBogInTheNight · 28/11/2021 22:24

Did anyone else notice the random scene with mark Fleischman and evil lady checking into the pub. Then never referenced again. What was that about?

middleager · 28/11/2021 22:25

Currently watching as I love a bit of Christmas fromage.

middleager · 28/11/2021 22:26

Also watching for Cary as he was so dashing in The Princess Bride.
