A Castle for Christmas

I'm not the biggest fan of the cheesy Netflix Christmas film but I quite enjoyed this one! Brooke Shields is charming and Cary Elwes does well as the curmudgeonly duke. I had a massive crush on him in his Lady Jane/Princess Bride heyday!

And Scotland looks gorgeous, though I'm not sure how realistic the depiction of the Highland village is! In fact I suspect it wasn't even filmed in the Highlands, but it's a fun way to kill 90 mins on a cold night.

Is the pub / pub set the same as in Falling for Figaro ? Now I did quite enjoy that.

That was an unexpected gem of a movie. I just stumbled across it.

Limpshade · 01/12/2021 21:55

It was harmless cheesy fun, but felt a bit like a poor man's Christmas in the Wild, with Kristin Davis and Rob Lowe: similar "woman with a career crisis flees to far-flung location and finds love" Grin That one has elephants, too!

middleager · 02/12/2021 09:50

I'm going to check out the Rob Lowe one next.
I completed Father Christmas is Back and it's pants. John Cleese, Caroline Quentin, Kesley Grammer, Kris thingy, are wasted in this!
It's oerfect for Liz Hurley's acting though....

mogschristmascalamity · 02/12/2021 10:00

I thought it was cheesy but fab. Much as I love Cary Elwes it would have been nice to have a Scots actor though. Theres a great film called A Christmas Ball on my5 which has one of the midsomer murders sidekicks in which also does the same with using US terminology. Its hilarious. A highlands Chjristmas or christmas in the highlands (cant remember which way round) is probably my fave with similar story to the Castle film and is also on my5 at the moment.

I also loved Father Christmas is back although it got the thumbs down on mumsnet.

KillingMeDeftly · 02/12/2021 16:56

I think Cary could've used his own accent and still been fine as I doubt a dyke would have a regional accent!

No! A duke!!

I knew Mumsnet would have a thread on this film Xmas Smile You guys haven't let me down.

It was so bad and now I know how people living in small snowy American towns must feel about Hallmark Christmas films - it was pretty farfetched - but I enjoyed it Xmas Grin

Ladybird69 · 02/12/2021 18:49

Some of these films have been cringeworthy but I really enjoyed one called the Holidate. I really enjoyed the one about the elephant orphanage too, just right when you don’t want to watch anything too heavy going.

wolfstarling · 06/12/2021 23:32

It's very Ballamoryesque.

WineAway · 07/12/2021 16:49

Was the music more Irish than Scottish…playing oillean pipes rather than bag pipes?

The weather was way too good for Christmas?

It was a step too far into fantasy for me.

Samcro · 07/12/2021 17:17

@CuriousBogInTheNight

Did anyone else notice the random scene with mark Fleischman and evil lady checking into the pub. Then never referenced again. What was that about?
I didn't get that bit, what was the point of it

Also the scene where one of the knitters takes an ominous sounding phone call.

Something has been edited out post production!

KillingMeDeftly · 07/12/2021 18:04

Apparently that was a cameo by two characters from another Netflix Christmas film. I think The Princess Switch.

I know I'm late to the party but I really enjoyed it too, fluffy nonsense.

I particularly laughed at:

  • the totally OTT American style professional outdoor Xmas lights on the castle/big house at the end
  • the OTT decorations
  • the dodgy geography and leaves on the trees
  • the short kilts
  • the party food going out in the morning, anyone for food poisoning
  • the daft fake village location

And I couldn't tear my eyes away from the poor actress who had to wear green knee socks over opaque tights for half the scenes. Poor lassie.

A very enjoyable 90 mins

garlictwist · 07/12/2021 18:23

I also noticed they filmed it in summer when the leaves were out and then just spray painted them white!

LiveintheNow · 07/12/2021 18:27

We invented a drinking game based on having a drink every time someone said 'Dun Dunbar', film was hilariously bad

TowandaForever · 07/12/2021 19:31

@MrsJackRackham

I can't I can't I can't The random only taxi in the village being a hackney The accents The knitting The cobblestone streets The knitting Lee Ross' too short kilt. The Scottish words used wrong Dear god it was bad. Nice to see a middle aged actress without botex etc though Ach, I'll probably watch it again. Just like you keep picking a scan Grin
Her forehead did not have a line in it?!
Riverlee · 11/12/2021 19:29

Just watched this film. It was so overly cliched! Even the dog was called Hamish!

It was endearing in its own way, but I felt ‘Father Christmas is back’ was the better film.

In the castle film, did anyone notice the male dancer wearing a kilt and thick winter jumper. It seemed slightly at odds with everyone else in party gear.

I though they said the duke was going to marry on Christmas Day?( or did I dream that). I presumed the people checking into the pub was related to that story. However, the betrothed never made an appearance.

KillingMeDeftly · 12/12/2021 14:05

I've moved on to Father Christmas is Back, which shows all signs of being terrible! But how does Liz Hurley do it? She's 55! Obviously she's had work done but she doesn't look overly "done" in the way some other celebs do.

Watching the Castle film now!

Where to begin? The accents.
The pub didn't have a tartan carpet all Scottish have a tartan carpet ime.
The Christmas decorations & lights
It was very Disneyland does Scotland

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 23/12/2021 00:07

Can't wait to watch this. We stumbled across some of this being filmed, in summer, in Culross in Fife.

Feelingoood · 23/12/2021 01:23

Watching now too, after seeing this thread couldnt resist!
It’s brilliant! Brooke is fascinating how well she stands and all that gorgeous cashmere. May actually get a haircut and stick a colour in. Soooo nice to see a lead lady with wrinkles. More please!

Feelingoood · 23/12/2021 01:25

Actually, I’d given up a bit, being old and a sahm in a scottish village ironically. Yes we have cows in the street and no cars at all. Exactly the same. Uncanny. So this has helped me realise it is possible to take care of yourself when you’re old and invisible. Life learning from this! Whodagyessed?!

Feelingoood · 23/12/2021 01:29

Have a friend in film who said they designed a special lens to hide Liz’s apparently terrible skin. Hope for us all!

Cosywosy · 23/12/2021 04:09

It's awful. I'm really surprised people enjoyed it!
