DH and I have agreed that this coming autumn/winter we would like to work our way through some classic films (e.g., Singing In the Rain, Holiday in Rome, etc!).

Can you help with our list?

The 39 Steps is one of my favourites. The Hitchcock version is great.

SocksAndTheCity · 25/09/2021 19:32

Some Like It Hot is great fun for a weekend afternoon (I'm planning to watch it tomorrow). How old/'classic' are you wanting to go?

Jaws
Planes, Trains & Automobiles
Pulp Fiction
A Clockwork Orange
Guys & Dolls
Ice Cold In Alex
Tootsie
Night Of The Hunter
Babe

I'd be happy with any of the above Smile

Genevieve - amazing film which pre dates Herbie by decades! Also Herbie! The Goonies. Gone with the Wind. The shop around the corner and You've got mail. My autumn is sorted :-)

The African Queen
Barefoot in the Park
Brief Encounter
An Affair to Remember
North by Northwest
Rebecca
Any of the Rock Hudson and Doris Day comedies

Inn Of The 6th Happiness, Houseboat, Black Narcissus, Passport To Pimlico, and Pollyanna

SteppinOutwithMyBaby · 25/09/2021 20:04

Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf. Bit harrowing, but great.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 25/09/2021 20:05

Where are these to be found though?

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 25/09/2021 20:10

His Girl Friday - genuinely still brilliant and very watchable.

SteppinOutwithMyBaby · 25/09/2021 20:13

One of the list of 100 best movies: I know the American Film Institute has one, and I'm sure that Bafta has as well.
Plus various magazines and film critics also do one.

Films that won an Academy Award for best picture of the year.

Anything with Cary Grant. Most films with James Stewart. Films featuring the fabulous but sadly almost forgotten Alistair Sim. For sheer entertainment, most of the Gainsborough films.

Philandbill · 25/09/2021 20:14

High Society and/or The Philadelphia Story.

Bolognesedoc · 25/09/2021 20:15

Anything with James Mason, Cary Grant or James Stewart!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 25/09/2021 20:16

@WartyToad

The 39 Steps is one of my favourites. The Hitchcock version is great.
I came straight on to recommend this one! Pot of tea, toasted crumpets and a bit of Robert Donat is my ideal Sunday afternoon.

Then I'd move on to Rear Window. I love Hitchcock films...

M0rT · 25/09/2021 20:22

Three Coins in a Fountain
Bringing up Baby
Stage Door
The African Queen
The Maltese Falcon
Voleflix has some old movies to watch for free if people are looking for them.

Eeve · 25/09/2021 20:52

Lovely suggestions!!! Exciting!
