DH and I have agreed that this coming autumn/winter we would like to work our way through some classic films (e.g., Singing In the Rain, Holiday in Rome, etc!).

Can you help with our list?

Ideally the films will be good for post Sunday roast lounging! If that makes a difference! Good to have some options that can be played with 9 year old DD in the vicinity Smile

In terms of how old/ classic - I'd love to watch stuff of the Gene Kelly/ Ginger Rodgers era. We love dance!

Meet Me in St Louis is a nice one. It pops up on Christmas film lists but actually covers a few holidays, so you can watch it any time of year.

Graphista · 25/09/2021 21:05

Soooo many!

Huge fan of Hitchcock myself so

The 39 steps - absolutely the best version ever!
The lady vanishes
Notorious
Rope
Strangers on a train
Rear window
To catch a thief
North by northwest
Charade
Psycho
The birds
Marnie - tw needed for this one very very dark far darker than any of his "Horrors" and Sean Connery plays a deeply disturbing "hero" in it

If you like bogie then as well as the obvious

Casablanca

I'd highly recommend

In a lonely place - my favourite bogie film ever!

Angels with dirty faces often forgotten nowadays
The Maltese Falcon is a classic
But...I prefer...
The big sleep
The treasure of the Sierra madre
We're no angels I like too

Bette Davis is also amazing!

All about Eve is a good "starter" for her weirdly
Whatever happened to baby Jane.
Of human bondage - if only for that amazing cockney accent!
Now, voyager

Gone with the wind is also an amazing film! It's rarely what people expect too! My mum resisted my recommendation for years thinking it was simpering ladies and boorish men and little substance. Not true!

Imitation of life is also a favourite of mine - stock up on tissues!

Ditto
Madam X
Blackboard jungle - another that isn't what people expect. Dd was astonished at the themes covered in such an old movie

Double indemnity

A streetcar named desire - again tw its a tough watch

Cat on a hot tin roof - similar in some ways unsurprisingly

Tiramiwho · 25/09/2021 21:07

Angels with Dirty faces ( Jimmy Cagney ) I cried buckets ( not a spoiler ) 😇

Philandbill · 25/09/2021 21:10

And Sabrina, Audrey Hepburn is amazing.

Tiramiwho · 25/09/2021 21:10

'An Inspector Calls' with the incomparable Alistair Sim.

ChequerBoard · 25/09/2021 21:11

Yes to all those listed plus:

Splendour in the Grass
The Wicked Lady
Raintree County
The Women
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Harvey
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

Aurorie11 · 25/09/2021 21:13

The Quiet Man

BoattoBolivia · 25/09/2021 21:19

The secret Life of Walter Mitty HAS to be the old Danny Kaye one- anything with him in really.
Flaming Star( a very unusual Elvis Presley film)
Any of the Ealing comedies but especially The Lady Killers.
Calamity Jane was my daughter's favourite film for YEARS.
Whistle down the wind is a beautiful children's film that adults will love.

Graphista · 25/09/2021 21:19

Oh crikey my list won't work with a 9 year old!

Lighter more musical fare then...

Busby Berkeley films are fabulous visual spectacles

Easter parade
Daddy long legs is a favourite of mine but not for everyone - I loved the book
42nd street
The gay divorcee (I think this is on iPlayer at the moment)

AzureTwist · 25/09/2021 21:26

The importance of being Earnest

SocksAndTheCity · 25/09/2021 21:33

Definitely go through all the Busby Berkeley ones (and I might too!) and also Anchors Aweigh.

So many wonderful films I'd forgotten about, and a perfect time of year to make a watchlist of them - thanks @Eeve 😀

SteppinOutwithMyBaby · 25/09/2021 22:34

@Bolognesedoc James Stewart
I was thinking about "Shenandoah" the other day. I haven't seen it for decades, and thinking about it still makes me want to weep. I've never been able to rewatch it. It was a terrific movie, but so sad.

That aside, I especially like James Stewart in his slightly out of character parts – things like "Rear window" and "Two rode together," where he played against type.

SteppinOutwithMyBaby · 25/09/2021 22:37

Gregory Peck in "The Big Country," and of course, "To Kill a Mockingbird."
Ben-Hur - Charlton Heston.

SteppinOutwithMyBaby · 25/09/2021 22:39

Those last two films are directed by William Wyler. You can watch anything that he directed.
