The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

This seems to be precision tooled for this thread.

Home Alone crossed with Shirley Valentine. That's sodding Michelle Pfeiffer.

2bh I only found out about it BC the soundtrack has Fleet Foxes doing an Elliott Smith cover

It's a bit bad though isn't it.

Sorry for the confusion 🤦‍♀️

I watched it and enjoyed it. Would have liked a different ending but won't spoil it.

The mind boggles. Does she shag one of the burglars?

More Mums on strike at Christmas

Do you mean On strike for Christmas? Is it quirky?

Lalgarh · 23/12/2025 21:44

I think it's trying to be quirky

Just watched Knives out 3. Very bizarre.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 24/12/2025 02:59

Oh What Fun was rubbish and I say that as someone who is ok with shit Christmas films.

JumpingDizzy · 24/12/2025 09:25

Can I also suggest Nowhere Special, again on the iPlayer? It’s more melancholic than hysterical though.

I recommended it on this thread way back in November 2023 @SleafordSods
It is so beautiful and certainly showcases James Norton’s superb acting talent. Heartbreaking film though.
I think it went under the radar because of Covid.

stilldumdedumming · 28/12/2025 16:34

Thank you for Marvellous. And Denmark recommendations. Neither I would have found without this thread. I need to save Nowhere Special for a brighter day!

I honestly hadn’t realised that the thread had been going for that long.

Such a sad subject but done so well and you’re right, it really does showcase his talent.

He can play thug Tommy Lee Royce in Happy Valley , the smooth, up market operator in Mc Mafia and a very ill window cleaner in Nowhere Special.
He is very versatile.
The Bond people should be beating down his door.

He'd be a fantastic Bond

SleafordSods · 30/12/2025 17:14

He would be an amazing bond!

Cherrypi · 31/12/2025 11:52

Marcel the Shell with Shoes on which was on BBC1 this morning.

stilldumdedumming · 31/12/2025 20:35

@Cherrypi My favourite- went to the expensive cinema to see this a while ago!

ScribblingPixie · 01/01/2026 10:07

The Left-handed Girl - Taiwanese film on Netflix about a mother and two daughters.

MIgZig · 01/01/2026 20:31

Anyone mentioned The Lost King yet?

notacooldad · 01/01/2026 23:00

I recommend Time still turns pages.
It's a Hong Kong film that came out in 2023.
