I saw this last night and bloody loved it!
I actually preferred it to the original.
The scriptwriter/director did a brilliant job with tying past and present.
I also liked the Easter egg at the end (The passport man Omid Djalili singing take a chance on me):
Bottom line - youngest DD wanted to go and subjected me to the first one again on Thursday...saw the trailer to the second one and had minimal expectations.
But it was fab. Really surprised. Lily James (Cinderella, baby driver) can sing, I hope she gets nominated for a golden globe in the musical category. The atmosphere in the cinema was just lovely.
My only gripe was them not fitting in Head Over Heels somewhere as I love that one. Given that Donna was late for graduation they could have used it then dammit, even as background instrumental. Also Eagle could have been used for the travelling dreams (even though she only went to two places!)
Anyhoo....
Didn't Donna say her mum was dead in the first one? yes

but in all honesty, and bearing in mind I saw the first one again the day before the sequel, the scene is blink and you'll miss it. I certainly didn't remember it.
- In the first one, it says Harry came to the island last. In this movie, she meets him first and he doesn't even go to the island.
Big plot hole

- The dates are waaaaay off. Donna goes to the island in 1979 as a 22 year old, but Sophie is 25 now? Is it set in 2005? No way is Meryl Streep's character only 47. All the actors look much older than the age they are supposed to be, except Cher who is only 3 years older than Streep....my head hurts
you are not alone

- Where was Bill's great aunt, Sophia? It wasn't the woman who gave Donna the farm house was it?
I think so. Sofia warned off Sam that Donna was with her great-nephew who was a 'stud'. She helped Donna give birth (hot water, towels etc) which presumably was why she named her daughter after her. She also thought Donna was lovely because she was nice to Sofia's horse.
- Did Sophie and Sky ever get married?
not told but I thought not.

Bustle mention a ring on right hand. They also worry about the Sofia character
- How did Donna die?
not told
but she got to shag Pierce Brosnan so she died happy.
- Cher met Fernando in 1959? Another date that makes no sense
Tis all a bit
timey wimey yep That throws off Fernando being her Dad by a couple of years. Meh.
- Why do Donna's friends have the same haircuts decades later?
they are channelling Anna Wintour And sparing me having to explain who the characters are every six seconds to DD
(even then she got confused as she thought Tanya and Rosie were Sophie's aunties)
- WHO is Sophie's dad?!
not told Hence all the grandfather ears/eyes/feet banter at the end.
Don't know - a virgin Harry might have had some pent up swimmers but frequent masturbation depletes sperm stores
A frequent shagger/ejaculator like Bill, as well as drinking, could have a lower sperm count
And Donna slept more times(?) with Sam so my money is on him but he might have been more condom-conscious if engaged, the cad
Who had the loosest boxers?!
I am of course biased towards Pierce though Remington Steele
The young Sam was my least favourite casting, although in fairness he picked up Pierce's brogue a couple of times
Hugh Skinner (Harry) has a Matt Smith thing going
explains the timey-wimey. Maybe Peter Capaldi nicked the guitar.
The young Bill was...swoon
But young Sam should have been played by
Danny Mac [gavel]
and older Harry should have had a happy end in all senses with his bf from the first movie (my kid wanted to know why he wasn't gay any more, bless her).
