Liked it! Good tunes, story stood up, and sad/moving at times.

Loved the setting.

Think the only song I didn't know was 'Andante, Andante'.

Yes, 'When I kissed the teacher' is really un-pc but I loved it when I was 12/13 - when 'Arrival' came out. Grin

Slartybartfast · 04/08/2018 12:31

me too Swedish Smile

woodhill · 04/08/2018 16:56

Adante was from supermtrouper album

The lyrics went over my head as a dc but listening to it again on MM2 its actually quite sexual imo.

SwedishEdith · 04/08/2018 18:55

Ah, thanks Woodhill. I didn't get Super Trouper or The Visitors - had all the others. Must have got to the age when I was a bit embarrassed to like them. Blush

I’m not a very big ABBA fan but went to see this with a friend who wanted to see it. It’s ok, light hearted fun but I wouldn’t watch it again.

Cher’s face didn’t move at all. I guess they added Cher in to ramp up the campiness. Didn’t need it though!

Lily James seems to be in everything at the moment but her singing was convincing. She’s come a long way from being Rose/Sybil’s replacement in Downton Abbey.

xsquared · 04/08/2018 20:04

Oh. I loved Donna’s outfits.

woodhill · 04/08/2018 20:35

Yes same here Edith

llangennith · 04/08/2018 21:04

Loved it! Even more than the first film. I couldn't care less about continuity errors. It's not real ffs!
I watched it with all-female group of family and friends aged from 66 to 14 and we all loved it.

WoollyMollyMonkey · 04/08/2018 21:05

Wasn’t the Sophia who left Donna the property supposed to be Bill’s Aunt?

In the first when Donna saw the 3dads in the old goat house, and it flashed back to when they were young, they were hippy like with long hair, but in MM2 none of them had long hair.

Figgygal · 05/08/2018 07:35

Continuity wise it's all over the place
I was surprised how many of the songs were in the first film too
I was really impressed with lily James and I'm sorry to say I was glad Meryl Streep didn't have another opportunity to go completely over the top like in the first one.

I almost cried when Pearce Brosnan sang (and not just bevause I remember how awful he was in the first one) but had full on tears rolling down face at the end.

I enjoyed it but hopefully that's the end now

KickAssAngel · 05/08/2018 10:51

So - Donna's mum is not definitely dead, although it's heavily implied that she is. (They could mean she may as well be dead because she never turns up) & The whole strict Catholic/performer thing can be overlooked.

Young Harry does turn up to the island, with guitar and no longer wearing a Sid Viscious shirt (they got that right).

Bill's great aunt is Sophia, the woman who runs the pub, and lets Donna stay in her old farmhouse for no rent. Donna looks after her when she's older & gets left the farmhouse.

The timeline just about works if you take the starting date as late 90s, when the musical was written.

My questions: Where did Sophie go to school? Donna had no money so surely Sophie went to school locally, but she's best friends with an English and a Scottish girl. Where did they meet? Sophie's only 20 in MM1, so not at uni (unless she dropped out because she met Sky?)

If making the old farmhouse a swanky hotel was Donna's dream, why didn't she do it? Presumably the money cam from architect Sam, and they had 4 years after MM1 when they could have started the work.

MM2 doesn't have the same exuberance as the first movie. The older actors don't have to prove anything & can afford to show everyone just how bad their singing is (and they do!). The younger actors are still needing to establish themselves so have to play their roles straight. I loved how much Colin Firth seemed to be laughing out loud at just how ridiculous the entire thing was.

Taytocrisps · 07/08/2018 21:59

I saw it today and enjoyed it although the plot is fairly threadbare. I don't imagine anyone will go to see it for the plot though. I was a bit confused at first as the plot kept switching between Donna in the 70s and Sophie in the present day. Cher has had way too much plastic surgery and could barely speak Shock. I'm glad she didn't feature too much. I enjoyed the presence of the three 'Dads' and Donna's friends (played by Julie Walters and Christine Baranski). It was like meeting up with old friends. Colin Firth has aged a bit (haven't we all!) and for some reason reminded me of William Roache a.k.a. Ken Barlow rather disconcerting because I've always fancied Colin Firth and can't say the same for William Roache.

Hushabyelullaby · 07/08/2018 22:14

No RTWT but I surely can't be the only one who really enjoyed it, when in fact I didn't really like the first one at all.

PuppyMonkey · 07/08/2018 22:24

I’m exactly the same as you Hush, went with my lot because they loved the first one but I’ve always been meh about it. I bloody loved this one though.

KnockMeDown · 08/08/2018 07:33

Saw this last night and absolutely bloody loved it! Yes, there were plot holes, but who cares, it was just so feel good!

And loved the cameos by Benny and Bjorn.

QOD · 08/08/2018 07:47

I’m going again today because I felt I missed so much. 😂

ajandjjmum · 08/08/2018 08:58

Loved it - cried my eyes out at the baptism. Going again with DD at the weekend. Enjoyed it much more than the first one.

dameofdilemma · 08/08/2018 09:11

They're feel good movies, yes there are gaping plot holes etc but sometimes its nice to have a break from heavy, serious drama.

It spans generations, there aren't many films that do that.
I went to see MM2 with my MiL then watched MM1 with my 6 yr old dd.
We all loved it.
I cried.
MiL cried.
Dd didn't cry but asked for a hug during the 'Slipping through my fingers' song.

Of course there are better movies (recently watched Lady Bird and loved it). But there aren't many movies MiL, dd and I could have bonded over in the same way and ultimately that's why I like them.

sandgrown · 08/08/2018 09:17

Why does everybody have to overthink the plot. It is pure cheesy entertainment! I actually cried when Cher saw Fernando. Not sure how you managed to hold it together Twitterqueen as it really brings home the mother/daughter relationship. I loved it .

TheNavigator · 08/08/2018 09:38

I loved it, joyous cheese, not really worth dissecting the plot, it just silly fun. The only criticism I would make is that by filming in Croatia, it lost the Greek islandness of the first - the location was not such a stunning part of this film. But I loved the energy and thought young Donna was fabulous - what a dream to be so beautiful and float around Greece with everyone falling in love with you Grin

hotcrossapple · 08/08/2018 09:56

oh I loved it too and preferred it to the first one (although loved that too) - took DD back to see it again. It has more plot holes than a swiss cheese but the key emotional moments resonated well, i thought. I loved the bit in the Church where Donna's ghost backs out of the church - nicely done. I'm encouraging all my female relatives to go.

ChessieFL · 08/08/2018 14:39

I loved the first one and was prepared for the second not to be as good, but I loved it! Agreed there are lots of plot holes and the timelines/ages don’t work, but I still loved it and am looking forward to seeing it again!

QOD · 08/08/2018 15:31

Cried like a baby and loved it even more on the second viewing

raisedbyguineapigs · 08/08/2018 17:14

Lily James seems to be in everything at the moment but her singing was convincing. She’s come a long way from being Rose/Sybil’s replacement in Downton Abbey. I went to see 3 films on the bounce that she was in, then I was an extra in another film where she popped up! I was a bit Hmm even though I like her!

Horsemad · 08/08/2018 19:21

Saw this today, absolutely loved it!
I'm not bothered by plot holes, etc, just enjoyed the whole thing.

I did cry more at this one though... Told friend (who has seen it 3 times now(!)) that she could have warned me so I could take make up to repair my blotchy face afterwards!!! 😂

Just enjoy it for what it is - a great big cheese fest!
