Liked it! Good tunes, story stood up, and sad/moving at times.

Loved the setting.

I actually enjoyed this one more than the original which I wasn’t that keen on. I admit I shed a few tears, loved Cher (and I’m not much of a Cher fan).
It also reminded me of being young (I was a teenager in the 70s and my best friend and I were huge ABBA fans, had all the albums and it made me think of her)
Loved the Meryl appearance though it did irritate me that young Donna had brown eyes and Meryl are bluey grey.

Soubriquet · 11/08/2018 20:58

I saw it tonight

I love the first film so had high expectations. I was disappointed as it was no where near as good but I still enjoyed it despite the very obvious plot holes.

As soon as she had that invite for her grandma, I immediately remembered she was dead in the first film.

Also Harry first when in the first he was last.

They also looked very hippyish/grunge in the first and wasn't this time.

But all in all, still a good film.

I did cry when her and Sophie were in the church singing together

Soubriquet · 11/08/2018 20:59

Oh and I hated Cher in it.

She brought nothing to the film and was a completely useless character.

mumof2sarah · 11/08/2018 21:07

For the first 10/15 minutes I couldn't make my mind up I was a bit bored I think. But then I loved it, not as much as the first one, but I loved it. I loved the story it told and the emotional side to it. Cher's character was very confusing but I got it in the end. I believe it's been left like that for another movie to follow x

raisedbyguineapigs · 11/08/2018 21:57

I hope they don't flog it to death by doing another one. I loved it. I loved all the actors. Agree about Cher though. Donna's mother was dead and a strict Catholic, hence her not going home. I think they lacked confidence in the young cast and the old cast without much Meryl so shoved Cher into it. They didn't need to because they were all great. I also think they should have set it 10 years later rather than 5. It would have fit better with the first film.

Davros · 12/08/2018 17:53

BestIsWest I too was a teenager in the 70s and there is NO WAY anyone I knew of our age like ABBA. They were distinctly naff. I think the hype of ABBA is a modern thing, they really weren't that popular other than with the under 10s and over 40s. I think they've been reinvented and everyone believes they liked them when, at the time, they were really quite meh. I went along to see this film and planned to leave my critical brain at the door, get sucked in and have a fab time. I don't care about plot holes at all but it was boring to me. I'm also uncomfortable with the whole idea that it's mostly "for women". Great if generations of the same family can enjoy something together but does it have to be quite so dumb for the female audience?!

BestIsWest · 12/08/2018 18:42

Davros -I loved them from 1974 to 77 (11 to 14) when I switched to The Jam, The Clash, Elvis Costello, Blondie etc. I can remember having Arrival for Christmas 1976 and playing it over and over.

However I continued to love them secretly and so did my best friend and we didn’t let on to anyone else - it was embarrassingly uncool.

I can remember hearing Terry Wogan introducing Supertrouper though and realising that it was all over for me and ABBA and I gave all my ABBA vinyl away.

Those songs though do bring back fond memories of being a certain age and I’ll happily sing along to them.

I agree the films don’t hold up to any kind of critical scrutiny but I can get that elsewhere.

BestIsWest · 12/08/2018 18:51

I don’t remember wearing such hippyish clothes in 1979 though (my memory might be playing tricks)

Snugglepiggy · 12/08/2018 19:20

Well I was distinctly naff then as a teenager! also in the 70s and I loved all their albums, they were the soundtrack to many hours of doing artwork for my A levels, but I've very eclectic tastes so lots of other music too.My DD has all my old vinyls and I've just been to see the film today .It's her 3rd viewing. After the initial 10 minute I loved it,and wept at the end.And actually preferred the songs in this one as I always preferred Abbas lesser known songs. For some reason never liked Dancing Queen.Masses of plot holes, age discrepancies but still loved it.

Whirlytastic · 12/08/2018 19:32

Loved it. Especially the scene on the boat with Young Bill - the 'Why did it have to be me' song. Could happily watch that on repeat.

woodhill · 12/08/2018 19:37

I loved ABBA in the late 70s and they were very popular along with Grease

HoardingQueen · 12/08/2018 21:47

I loved it all, singing and dancing was just great, went to be entertained and was, don't care about plot holes , as for Cher...just a goddess, everyone cheered in our cinema when she appeared!, and Andy Garcia, yes, I still would!

papayasareyum · 12/08/2018 23:30

I love Cher and she was great in it. She’s amazing and you forget how old she is, but when she did that dance with Andy Garcia, you could tell from the way she moved. She’s a goddess with the most phenomenal voice (still, at 72!) and she’s a great actress too, so would have liked her to be in the whole movie.

Slartybartfast · 12/08/2018 23:44

Why did it have to be was just Fabulous. I keep googling it and waking up singing it! Grin

lucydogz · 14/08/2018 21:09

Too much shrieking and frolicking. And the boring old trope about old women lusting after young men. And poor old Andy Garcia, hanging around pointlessly for the duration just to be a peg for Cher to hang her character on

GunpowderGelatine · 14/08/2018 23:58

Saw this the other night.

If you take the Mamma Mia films for what they are - silly fun musicals - you'll enjoy hen. You can't take them seriously.

The end My Love My Life was very moving and every scene with Amanda Seyfried in broke my heart. She did 'coping mourning' very well.

I thought Sky was a dick in the first film and still think it now. Moaning because Sophie was mourning her Mum - "she died a year ago". Shock prick.

I wonder how awkward it was as Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper are exes IRL

ajandjjmum · 15/08/2018 10:07

Saw it for the second time and loved it more!

Our group of 7 included 78 yr GPs, 84 yr Aunt, DH and I (older than I care to admit!) and DD and DS (mid-20s). Everyone loved it. A fun, happy, tear jerking film which everyone seemed to be enjoying.

Elderflower14 · 15/08/2018 10:12

Why weren't Sophies girlfriends in the second film?

lucydogz · 15/08/2018 13:46

thinking about it, forget to say how dodgy the attitudes to the Greeks are. They are but children, they may be unemployed and poor but hey, the offer of a jolly big party will soon cheer them up. And they are incapable of turning a wrecked farmhouse into a lovely hotel by themselves, it needs a northern European to sort it and give them lovely jobs as servants. And the actual heir can still play his music for the guests (his mum having disinheritted him 'because he's an animal' , and obviously she has discerned that whatsername deserves it more)

raisedbyguineapigs · 15/08/2018 20:01

I agree with gunpowder. There are loads of dodgy things in the plot- Sam has ditched his evidently teenage children to run off to Greece with a holiday shag from 20 years before for a start off, not to mention the unprotected sex with strangers by all the main protagonists. But many films that take themselves far more seriously have dodgy attitudes to women and other cultures. Mamma Mia is not meant to be taken seriously. Its silly popcorn fun.

ineedwine99 · 15/08/2018 20:14

I loved this film!!!! Went to see it with my MIL and we were laughing/crying/singing all the way through, cant wait for the DVD!
Young Sam was v nice eye candy!

GunpowderGelatine · 15/08/2018 20:27

YY Raised I wonder how shit Sam's teenage kids felt at not being invited to their father's wedding and not meeting their stepmother beforehand. It's a MN thread waiting to happen Grin

hotcrossapple · 16/08/2018 09:45

it doesn't bear analysis does it? If Donna was the 'love of his life' he also ruined his ex's life by trying to do the wrong thing and it all massively falling apart. Similarly, they all seem to have wealthy backgrounds and I've no idea what Donna was supposed to be living off for all those years.

raisedbyguineapigs · 16/08/2018 10:54

Yes and Donna's hypnotic feminine wiles has also managed to compel a gay man and a serial philanderer to drop everything and come to their one night stands daughters wedding!

Didiplanthis · 16/08/2018 19:47

Is it ok to take my naive nearly 9 yr old to ? She's seen the first one recently. The sex stuff all went way over her head !!
