Following on from the recent thread about favourite actors from old films, @FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds had the fab idea of an old movies appreciation thread... So here it is! If you like old films and actors of any kind, come and join us.

old thread

We thought we'd look out for any classic films being shown on TV, post them on this thread and then discuss them afterwards... But if you want to post about any of your favourite old films and actors at any time, that would also be fab. Basically, this is just a place to chat about old films - please come and join us!

I'm off to check the TV schedules for any potential gems coming up - I will post again with anything that looks good.

Meantime, here's James Cagney tap dancing down the stairs in Yankee Doodle Dandy - happy bank holiday everyone Smile

myimaginarycat Nunsnet 🤣🤣

The lovely 84 Charing Cross Road is on bbc2 now, missed the beginning but it'll be on iPlayer for a bit luckily.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 13/01/2019 19:23

Nunsnet Grin Grin Grin

One of the things I've been enjoying about these old films is the warning at the beginning of some which says "This film contains language which some people may find offensive".

This turns out to be the Hero shouting "Damn you!" to the Villain, or grabbing the Heroine bu her upper arms and saying "Curse you, you little fool! Can't you see I'm in love with you and would walk to Hell and back for you?"

Such an innocent age and all the better for it in many ways.

PrivateParkin · 13/01/2019 21:56

Grin There was a lot of upper arm grabbing back then wasn't there?! Extremely odd when you think about it. Perhaps it was seen as some kind of winning move back then?!

I’ve just watched They Were Sisters on TP. I’ve never heard of it before, can’t recommend it enough.

It was one of those films where everyone spoke with the accent of our own dear Queen, (twisted mildly out of shape by the odd domestic).

Plot-wise it was a little bit sad as the central story was James Mason’s cruel treatment of his long suffering wife (Dulcie Gray). She took to drink over his repeated acts of humiliation, which included forcing her to back down when she closed the grocer’s account because the delivery man was rude to her.

Really, there is very little else on telly to top this stuff.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 14/01/2019 19:45

I was out all day fleas and just caught the last five minutes. I was CURSING!

"Twas a useless training course and eight hours of my life I'll never get back, an' all.

(There weren't even any decent biscuits . . . )

I'm hoping it will be repeated.

PrivateParkin · 14/01/2019 21:29

I think They Were Sisters was the film that Halsall said sounded like something from the relationships board on here Sad

It's on again on Wednesday at 3.30 btw - am recording it...

I watched Indiscreet over the weekend and enjoyed it, although Cary's behaviour was also rife with red flags of the relationship kind!! Shock Only he could get away with that ridiculous scheme he cooked up. It was good though, and I loved the dancing in it as a PP said. And Ingrid's gowns were beautiful - especially the yellow brocade one. Gorgeous.

Well if you get the chance to watch They Were Sisters I won’t say any more just yet. I’d be very interested to hear thoughts though.

Tomorrow’s afternoon treat is Another Man’s Poison.

I quote from the TP review:
“It defies belief that Davis, even in villainess mode, could appear in such drivel.”

Cracking! 😂

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 14/01/2019 23:29

A training course without decent biscuits is unforgivable Schaden. I hope you said so in your delegate feedback.

I had to do a speed course after inadvertently going a little too fast in my car. The ONLY thing I remember from the course was the biscuits. I think at £60 for a half day the organisers knew budget biscuits would have been a step too far in a room full of reckless lawbreakers like us. Grin

Davros · 15/01/2019 16:30

Just got my new RT and I see that Laura is on at 6.20am(!) on Sunday 20th bbc2. Set your recording devices!

PrivateParkin · 15/01/2019 18:07

Oh that's great, thanks Davros! Can't wait. And look at this gorgeous poster for the film.

“It defies belief that Davis, even in villainess mode, could appear in such drivel.”

I watched it - I can concur with this assessment (btw - it was bollox, but great bollox!) Grin

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/01/2019 19:14

Thank you Davros - recorder set!

Re: the biscuits fleas - I was beyond shocked! This was a C of E training course - I've never yet met a vicar who can't inhale their own weight in biscuits in even a 10-minute meeting. So why do they expect the laity to have to put up with substandard generic bourbons and soggy digestives?

Last voluntary missional responsibility I'll ever take on, I can tell you! Angry

And the leader was an arse ( "When I was asked to do this I said 'No, o - I'm doing so much for the Lord already'" Hmm)

And I also had this "conversation"
^

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 15/01/2019 19:34

Schaden that is beyond rude, I’m seething for you.

If I’d been there would have been overly friendly. You would have been trying to shake me off by the end of the session. Or we would have been sent out for giggling.😆😆😆

I’d offer you naice biscuits but DH has singlehandedly worked his way through all the Christmas treats whilst I was on my sick bed mainlining Strepsils.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/01/2019 20:20

Or we would have been sent out for giggling.

I suspect that this is what would have happened.

VICIOUS CIRCLE just about to start TP

Repeated at 4am

Halsall · 15/01/2019 21:23

I hope you came home and defiantly treated yourself to some naice biscuits after that annoying experience, Schaden

Yup, Parkin, it was me who said that about They Were Sisters Sad - its horrifyingly believable. A good film though (and the Dorothy Whipple novel it's based on is worth reading, too).

Thanks for the various tip-offs, everyone!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/01/2019 21:32

Thanks for the tip-off Subtitles

Recorder set!

PrivateParkin · 15/01/2019 21:37

Schadenfreude ugh that's awful! Some people are simply beyond rude. I definitely think you need biscuits and a foray into a classic film - surely that will set things to rights.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/01/2019 22:37

I watched that Bette Davis thing this afternoon and felt much better for it Parkin.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/01/2019 22:39

I didn't have any biscuits (all the Xmas biscuits have been et! Grin), but there was some Xmas cake left, and I found some cornettos in the freezer )

It is a series, saw one last week

I think it is on about 1pm

You're welcome

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/01/2019 15:13

The Wicked Lady (Margaret Lockwood and James Mason) is on on Sunday at 4.00 pm.

Davros · 17/01/2019 15:36

Must watch that (again!)

PrivateParkin · 17/01/2019 17:40

Love The Wicked Lady - for James Mason's wig alone!
