Because reading 50 books and running a marathon isn't enough for me, and I love a good list, I've decided to challenge myself to watch 25 new films this year.
I'm going to use this thread to record what I've watched and whether I liked it. Please feel free to join me and share.
I want to watch at least half these films at the cinema. The rest I will either watch on dvd or on Netflix/Amazon.
I'm off to watch The Darkest Hour this evening to kick things off. Reviews look good so expectations are high! I'll be back later to record my inane ramblings thoughts.

Before sunrise - and if that's of interest then try the whole triology. Also Wim Wenders 'Wings of desire'. It really is something else. Otherwise you could try some classics in a genre you like but which are less well known (e.g for noire: Gilda or Laura).

Watched The Viceroy's House on Now TV, about the story of Indian independence and subsequent partition. Good performances from Hugh Bonneville and Gillian Anderson, plus Manish Dayal and Huma Qureshi.

It gives great background on some of the political influences and pressures leading to the decision of partition, as well as the human stories behind it. I enjoyed it!

  1. I saw My Name is Joe last night, gritty
HoundOfTheBasketballs · 04/04/2018 00:16

*9. Annihilation
*
On Netflix. Stars Natalie Portman. Nice to watch a film with almost all female characters. It was really weird though. I feel like I might have missed the point of it.

  1. Moonrise Kingdom (Netflix), set in the mid 60's on an island off New England, adolescent love story. Funny and poignant.
TM71 · 07/04/2018 20:47

And the new tomb raider

Slartybartfast · 08/04/2018 07:28
  1. Got to see The Shape of Water now. I did enjoy the love story, Sally Hawkins was excellent. The side story with the Russians was a bit confusing.
Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 08/04/2018 20:39
  1. Love, Simon - rather sweet tale of a high school boy coming out.
HoundOfTheBasketballs · 09/04/2018 10:27

I tried to watch The Hitman's Bodyguard on Netflix last night, but it was so dreadful I couldn't finish it, so it doesn't count towards my total!

12 The Greatest Showman. I absolutely loved it!! Musicals aren't usually my thing but this blew me away. The DC loved it too.

epicclusterfuck · 10/04/2018 23:24

Just seen Ready Player One - I enjoyed it, really good fun

Also seen Death of Stalin, very entertaining

EmilyDickinson · 10/04/2018 23:44

Great idea for a thread OP. I watch quite a lot of films but don't really keep track of them. I've no idea how many I watch in a year. I don't know if I can actually remember accurately what I've watched since the start of the year so I might have to add to my list later but this is it so far.

1 Darkest hour
2 The Post
3 Call me by your name
4 The shape of water
5 Phantom Thread
6 The lady vanishes
7 Bringing up baby
8 Made in Dagenham
9 The silent child
10 Suite Francaise
11 A Quiet Place
12 Jackie

Satisfyingly 6-10 were all on iplayer so "free".

A lot of the films I've watched seem to be about historically significant moments and real people. I watched Victoria and Abdul and Dunkirk towards the end of last year as well. Are there more of these kind of films around than usual do you think?

In a way I think this made me particularly enjoy The Shape of Water, which was pure escapist fantasy and also beautifully shot.

I also loved A Quiet Place. A real old fashioned suspense movie. It has the same kind of feel as Jaws.

Slartybartfast · 11/04/2018 06:46
  1. The Silent Child. sad, happy for the Holloaks actor who did so well. Sweet child playing the part.
RumAppleGinger · 11/04/2018 19:27
  1. Isle Of Dogs.

Took my two and my friend's DS to see it this afternoon. I really enjoyed it. I was a bit worried that the overall 'greyness' might not hold their attention but they all transfixed by it. DS1(7) said it was only ok but I have never seen him so silent and still in the cinema before. DS2 (3) loved it but he is dog daft so I don't give his review much weight. I am not a massive Wes Anderson fan but I thought it was wonderful. Great animation and doesn't drag on.

HoundOfTheBasketballs · 18/04/2018 09:56

10. Gold

Watched this on Amazon Prime. Matthew McConaghey starring as a gold prospector. Based loosely on true events. Quite good.

*11. The Drop
*
James Gandolfini's last feature film before he died. Also featuring the delectable Tom Hardy butchering a Noo Yoik accent. Some gangsters and an incredibly cute puppy. Very good stuff.

Adding 'I Tonya' to the list of films I've seen this year, not sure of the numbers though. I really enjoyed it but thought I shouldn't in some ways... very well done

Bouledeneige · 20/04/2018 16:16

The Quiet Place - thoroughly gripping. Not for anyone with a heart condition. And when it's over .... you can breathe again.

HoundOfTheBasketballs · 20/04/2018 22:13

Bouldeneige - my mate went to see The Quiet Place and she loved it too. Said she'd never felt the need to be more quiet in the cinema!

14. Thor: Ragnarok
I loved this. I'd developed a case of Marvel fatigue and it took a fair bit of convincing from my boyfriend to get me to watch it. The fact that it doesn't even take itself a tiny bit seriously helped. I'm actually quite looking forward to Infinity War now.

  1. Rampage - enjoyable but very cheesy

  2. The Leisure Seekers - unbelievably depressing

  3. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - wonderful film

  4. Ready Player One - alright but a bit too long

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 26/04/2018 19:13
  1. Guernsey...... - I liked this, was sweet non demanding afternoon film.
  2. Avengers - Infinity Wars - I loved this and I'm seeing it again tomorrow. Much darker than previous MCU films, can't wait until next May for part 2.
HoundOfTheBasketballs · 02/05/2018 20:10

I have just booked to see Black Panther at the Rooftop Cinema club in London in a couple of weeks. Very excited!
Hoping to see Infinity War on Monday if possible.

Great thread idea!

  1. The Greatest Showman. Absolutely loved it. Have soundtrack, listen before work everyday with my daughter. Get this though - I have always hated circuses. That will not change. Cinema
  1. Logan - awfully violent. So beyond what I like about comic book films. Curiously I want to see all the x-men film in their historical order. Sky
  1. Black Panther - Exciting, ground-breaking, a little predictable, in parts. Taking the last flower etc. Martin Freeman's accent Hmm. Cinema
  1. Sully - Nice film. What they did to that gentleman, was typical of big business. However, it was quite insightful how the industry works. Sky
  1. Miss Sloane - Absolutely loved this film. Nothing to fault it. Amazon
  1. Guardians of the Galaxy - terrible plot. It just was. it didn't even feel like it made much sense. I'll still watch the 3rd one though. Sky
  1. Mudbound- fantastic dramatization. Just loved the story. The acting was powerful and believable. Cinema
  1. Avengers Infinity: Fantastic. But it's not over and the problem is you know who is coming back to life, they have a movie out in 2020Grin
BestIsWest · 07/05/2018 21:12
  1. Lion (Amazon Prime). First half was heart breaking, second half a bit dull.
  1. Avengers Infinity Wars - enjoyable hokum.
