Because reading 50 books and running a marathon isn't enough for me, and I love a good list, I've decided to challenge myself to watch 25 new films this year.
I'm going to use this thread to record what I've watched and whether I liked it. Please feel free to join me and share.
I want to watch at least half these films at the cinema. The rest I will either watch on dvd or on Netflix/Amazon.
I'm off to watch The Darkest Hour this evening to kick things off. Reviews look good so expectations are high! I'll be back later to record my inane ramblings thoughts.

Yes sakura I'm looking forward to Lady Bird too. I really like Greta Gerwig. Frances Ha is in my all time top 10.

I'm not surprised 50 Shades disappointed you niki. I haven't seen any of the films or read any of the books. And I don't want to either! Grin

I've been rubbish this week and not seen anything new. I watched Back to the Future 3 tonight with DS, his first time seeing it and my approx 100th! I'm so glad he loves them as much as I do.

@HoundOfTheBasketballs Frances Ha is great! 🙂

  1. Three Billboards - Loved it. Fantastic acting, very moving.
  2. Darkest Hour hmm, good acting by Gary Oldman, amazing make up but it was all a bit jingoistic for me. I wasn’t sure about the ‘fictitious’ scene either.
Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 16/02/2018 19:05
  1. The Shape of Water, lovely film not quite convinced about all of the hype but it's lovely to look at, well acted if a bit predictable. Solid 4/5.
Slartybartfast · 18/02/2018 09:10
  1. Paddington 2, loved it
2 Greatest Showman - disappointed, might have enjoyed if I knew the songs
  1. The Darkest Hour - Excellent
  2. Captain Philips - does this count as it is not new, it was on Netflix, and was new to me
  3. Phantom Thread - excellent

Want to see Shape of Water

NewYearNiki · 18/02/2018 11:01
  1. Black Panther

Loved it!

Wonderful film

NewYearNiki · 19/02/2018 17:04
  1. The Martian

A Ridley Scott film. Loved it. Available on Netflix. Wonderful soundtrack and amazing film.

sakura06 · 19/02/2018 20:35
  1. The Post
10. Black Panther

At home, I've seen 'Your Name' which is a Japanese animation which I really enjoyed. Quite magical. I've also seen 'My Life as a Courgette' which is great, but has a bleak start!

HoundOfTheBasketballs · 19/02/2018 23:56

The Martian with Matt Damon? I do like that, even though I think a lot of people pick holes in it.
I'm struggling at the moment. Last week I tried to watch In Bruges, but fell asleep halfway through it. Tonight I watched Fargo with my boyfriend, who hadn't seen it - but I had, so it doesn't count.
Still haven't made it to the cinema either this month and there is so much I want to see. Life just keeps bloody getting in the way!

NewYearNiki · 20/02/2018 00:20

Yes the one with Matt Damon, I really enjoyed it.

I liked In Bruges. Has some of my insults in it

NewYearNiki · 20/02/2018 16:50
  1. The Greatest Showman.

Oh good Christ. What a load of garbage.

I saw this on another thread about it and agree with every word.

"PPs are right, the songs were unremarkable, the plot was obvious and banal, the characters shallow. I was disappointed it didn't show any of how they put the first show together, there was no drama, it was just, here's a another blaring song. And the absolute worst moment was after we'd heard so much about Jenny Lind being the world's best most amazing opera singer, she starts singing like something out of X-Factor."

No drama no plot development just shit this happened lets sing again.

  1. Father Figures

It was alright. A little light on laughs for a comedy though. The best character was the hitchhiker but he was only in it for 10 minutes.

HoundOfTheBasketballs · 23/02/2018 22:24

4/25 - In Bruges

I managed to finish watching this tonight having fallen asleep halfway through it last week. I think that says more about how tired I was than how good the film is. I really enjoyed it. Strong performances by all the actors but I particularly enjoyed Ralph Fiennes performance. And as someone said up-thread, it's got some brilliant insults in it that I'll definitely be taking with me. It has also made me quite want to visit "Fucking Bruges." Grin

I was quite keen to see The Greatest Showman niki, but you're the second or third person now who's said it's all style over substance, and not much style at that!

  1. I, Tonya

I love Margot Robbie and she didn't disappoint. A brilliant film with some very fucked up characters. Allison Janney plays her character with jaw dropping nastiness.

BestIsWest · 25/02/2018 17:21
  1. I Tonya. Superb acting all round though I did think Alison Janney was channeling Deirdre Barlow at times.
I thought Sebastian Stan was excellent as the husband too.
RumAppleGinger · 25/02/2018 18:19

Ooh please can I join you. I got a Limitless card this year and have been making an effort to go and see as much as possible. Unless I see a film at the cinema I am rubbish at sitting down and watching when at home despite having both Netflix and prime. I will list what I have seen so far and do a small review for everything I see from here on out.

The Greatest Show Man
The Post
Darkest Hour
Coco
Ferdinand
Jumanji
Black Panther
Three Billboards
I, Tonya
The Shape of Water

I think that is everything I have see so far so already at 10. Live my limitless card! Out of that lot the shape of Water was my favourite by a long shot but enjoyed Three Billboards and I, Tonya. Hoping to see Ladybird but don't think my local odeon are showing it.

CherryPie13 · 25/02/2018 22:03
  1. Fifty Shades Freed

Hmmmm, Mills and Boon meets whips and chains Grin

HoundOfTheBasketballs · 25/02/2018 22:53

Hi rumapple, welcome to the thread.

My friend came round earlier with a bag of DVDs he didn't want anymore so I've got a few more things to watch.
I wish I had enough child-free time to get to the cinema more often.
Hopefully in a week or so, either that or I'll have to go and see a kids film with DS!

This is what I can remember in 2018:

The Eye of the Needle (Netflix)
Their Finest
Arrival (again)
Nowhere Boy (Netflix)
War for the Planet of the Apes
Darkest Hour
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Call Me by your Name

Loved Three Billboards, better than I was expecting - sometimes I hear all the hype and then am disappointed- but it was great.

Darkest Hour - liked it all lot for the behind the scenes look at that very particular point in time.

Call Me By Your Name - likes it but I think I preferred Stealing Beauty (seen years ago) which Emma's a similar theme of first love and setting.

Hoping to see The Shape of Water, Black Panther, Ladybird and I, Tonya.

CherryPie13 · 01/03/2018 21:32
  1. Finding Your Feet

Really enjoyed it. Quite sad in places. Fell a little bit in love with Timothy Spall's character.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 01/03/2018 21:36
  1. Black Panther - enjoyable Marvel romp.
  2. I Tonya - loved this - great cast.
CherryPie13 · 02/03/2018 20:03
  1. Black Panther

Struggled to stay until the end. Had high hopes as I love Marvel films but I didn't enjoy this one at all. It took itself far too seriously. However, it was great how the women had so many strong leads.

CherryPie13 · 03/03/2018 15:24
  1. Game Night

Great comedy and a decent storyline. Jason Bateman is really good in it.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 03/03/2018 22:03
  1. Finding your feet - predictable, saved by the cast.
