Because reading 50 books and running a marathon isn't enough for me, and I love a good list, I've decided to challenge myself to watch 25 new films this year.
I'm going to use this thread to record what I've watched and whether I liked it. Please feel free to join me and share.
I want to watch at least half these films at the cinema. The rest I will either watch on dvd or on Netflix/Amazon.
I'm off to watch The Darkest Hour this evening to kick things off. Reviews look good so expectations are high! I'll be back later to record my inane ramblings thoughts.

A friend of mine who's seen Black Panther said it covers quite serious themes, considering it's a Marvel movie and they are usually very lighthearted. Would you agree bagel?

Thank you - Paddington 2 was an absolute delight by the way! A real gem of a film.

BagelGoesWalking · 19/03/2018 11:22

Yes, it was more serious. Interesting themes of sharing their power (the mineral they mined) with other African countries, never mind the rest of the world. Sharing their enlightened rule - although still not democratic in the slightest - with others etc.

But, as a film, I still feel it could have been "tighter" and faster paced at some points. Still don't know why they chose Martin Freeman to play a CIA agent!

  1. Tomb Raider

It was alright but not great as it was just a bit lacking all round.

  1. Mary Magdalene

I love Joaquin but he was like a stoner hippy trying to get everyone to join his cult.

ladymarian · 21/03/2018 15:40

Just found this thread - I've found my people! I want to watch loads of films this year!
So far:
3 Billboards - amazing, loved it
Coco - best kids film I've ever seen
Paddington 2 - better than the first one. Hugh Grant was great fun!
Shape of Water - weird but wonderful
Suicide Squad - didn't actually watch it all because I thought it was terrible
John Wick - DH's choice but I surprised myself by enjoying it
John Wick 2. - not a bad sequel
A Good Year - charming and enjoyable Rom Com
Kingsman Secret Service - entertaining!

I'll definitely get more than 25!

ladymarian · 21/03/2018 15:44

Just remembered about I, Daniel Blake - wonderful, hard hitting and we'll made with great acting. Made me cry and made me angry

Snowmagedon · 21/03/2018 20:11

Phantom thread is amazing film. Interesting on so many levels, enough depth to re watch looking at different angles, fashion, woodcock /cyril, cyril and alma etc. The mushrooms..

Billboard was good but I would never watch it again.

BagelGoesWalking · 22/03/2018 13:22

Finally got around to watching Moana last night. Such a lovely film! Thoroughly enjoyed it and loved the songs. which I knew already because ... Lin Manuel Miranda, another semi-god. Grin

Slartybartfast · 24/03/2018 00:03

Last weekend watched
The Magdalene Sisters - excellent, thought provoking
Tonight been to see Game Night - excellent, funny

Slartybartfast · 24/03/2018 00:06
  1. Earlier in the year, I am sure, I saw and very much enjoyed Paddington 2
Slartybartfast · 24/03/2018 18:01
  1. Billboards - enjoyable
afrikat · 26/03/2018 10:49

I've totally lost track of my movies!

  1. Black Panther
Wonderful movie. Love the world they created
  1. Game Night
Went on a bit but found it hilarious 10. Paddington 2 Adorable and very sweet. Really enjoyed it 11. Ferdinand Middling 12. Annihilation Very odd. Kind of great 13. The Cloverfield Paradox I think I would have loved this if they hadn't tried to shoehorn the Cloverfield connection in
ladymarian · 28/03/2018 21:09

No 11 - the recent remake if The Beguiled with Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell. I was a bit meh about it to be honest.

HoundOfTheBasketballs · 28/03/2018 21:44

*8. Peter Rabbit
*
I went into this with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Quite enjoyable and it was fun to spot the other Beatrix Potter characters in their bit parts. Pigling Bland is a particular highlight.
Not a patch on either of the Paddingtons though, which I see we are all big fans of.

  1. Justice League I literally forgot it whilst I was watching it
BagelGoesWalking · 29/03/2018 10:09

The Girl with All the Gifts with Gemma Arterton.

Good adaptation of the book but, as a film, it lacks some of the detail which makes the ending a bit bland. Therefore, it is fairly and unrelentingly miserable.

RumAppleGinger · 30/03/2018 14:56
  1. Peter Rabbit. I relented and took the kids to see it this morning. I thought it was really pretty awful. How does Rose Byrne keep getting acting work? She is utterly unconvincing in everything she does. It was far too long and very light on humour. It has however motivated me to get out and go use my limitless card. On the list this weekend is Ready Player One, Isle of Dogs and possibly Unsane but I'm a bit of a shitebag when it comes to horror so will tread carefully.
Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 30/03/2018 22:03
  1. The Florida Project - saw this last year at the cinema and decided to watch again on streaming. Still enjoyed it second time around.
Slartybartfast · 30/03/2018 23:44
  1. Tyrannosaur, just seen this
very good.
RumAppleGinger · 31/03/2018 20:53
  1. Ready Player 1. Absolute cracker of a movie! I'm not a gamer but am a Spielberg fangirl. I really enjoyed it but it was a bit long and could easily have been cut down by about half an hour without losing anything.

Word of warning though it is a 12A but I absolutely wouldn't take younger children to it. I have takes DS1 who is 7 to other 12A's like the new star wars films but this is a step too far in my opinion and should be a 15.

possible spoilers as to why it's not suitable

There are lots of references to pop culture with a good ten minute scene set inside the film The Shining including scary twins, blood elevator, inside room 237 as well as some creepy zombies, the Ailen chest burst scene and Chucky. I loved it but glad I didn't take DS1 along with me on a whim.

epicclusterfuck · 01/04/2018 19:47

Just to add a couple more

Okja - South Korean and very interesting unusual film, liked it a lot

Isle of Dogs - also very different and not really a kids film! Enjoyed it.

Bouledeneige · 01/04/2018 20:07

I'm a big movie goer. So far this year I've seen:

  • Darkest Hour - strangely unmoving and stylised, though impressive make up and acting art from the eponymous hero 5/10
  • Three Billboards - brilliant cast - Frances McDonrmand, Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson -doesn't quite hit the target on full emotional impact but still a good if not great film 8/10
  • Call me by my name - charming performance from Timothee Chalamet, and beatifully shot, but a little wooden and unbelievable at heart 6/10
  • I Tonya - too dry and ironic at points but great performances from the leads and packs a punch in the final scenes of true footage 7/10
  • Ladybird - lovely performances particularly from Saorise Ronan and Beanie Feldstein as the teenage girls, great Mum and teenage daughter movie but not saying much we havent seen before 7/10
  • You were never really here - dark, hollow and harsh 4/10
BestIsWest · 01/04/2018 21:43
  1. Ready Player One. Loud and flashy and much too long but overall quite enjoyable.
Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 01/04/2018 21:53
  1. Isle of dogs. Enjoyable Wes Anderson animation. Not really a film for younger children, I think they would be bored.
  2. The Hitman's Bodyguard - this popped up on Netflix. Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L Jackson, lots of swearing and violence, quite amusing but could have been better.
mamapants · 02/04/2018 18:17

I'm hoping lurking here will inspire me to get back into watching movies. I doubt I will reach anywhere near 25 though.
1.Wonderwoman

  1. Peter Rabbit

Enjoyed both of these.
