Explain the plot/ending of.....

There are some films that have very confusing plots. Or, the plots are fine but the ending leaves you going "Eh?" Or in extreme cases "WTAF?!!!" So I wanted to start a thread for all of us who were left scratching our heads or chins.

I will start off with some of mine - Inception. Dream within a dream within a what? AND the coin - was the final one real or a dream?

Vanilla Sky/skies? - same sorta shit. Dream - real or not real?

The Matrix - utterly incomprehensible.

Fight Club. Was he schizophrenic and was Marla even real? Was any of it real?

Please feel free to answer and / or share your own.

I have no answer OP I can only agree with your choices above - have given myself several headaches trying to work these out. Hmm

Gothbaby · 20/07/2017 11:47

I am a total film nerd/write reviews for magazines so i mayyyyyy be able to help. however some are open endings/open to interpritation :-) spoilers

Inception is meant to be an open ending, for the audience to question.
Vanilla sky i thought the whole thing was explained... hes in a unconscious state the whole film until he wakes up?

The matrix ends with the real world' and the matrix compromising, as they would rather that then the virus Agent taking over all. (so people can leave if they chose)
Anddddd Fight Club... Wellllll the film ends with 'it was all him and it was real but the book is far more of an open ending/never really find out :)

hope that helps a little xxx

Bloody Blair Witch Project! WTF was that ending about...?

NikiBabe · 21/07/2017 18:35

The films you listed were all pretty straight forward to work out Confused

WhatInTheWorld76 · 21/07/2017 19:33

Oh NikiBabe if they were so straightforward why didn't you explain first? That's such a pretty face to pull but be careful if the wind changes you might stick like it, babe!

This is going to sound pathetic, but Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Yes it turned out that he was just telling them a story at the beach, but when did the story start? Because it appears that in the middle of the story Truly goes home and sings a song about how much she is falling in love with him. I'm confused about the timeline!

Ignores the spamming by NikiBabe

I think the timeline issue of Chitty is a bit off too. As its a Disney "classic" I just let them off. I also have no idea when the story really starts....

Marking place.

DailyFailstinks · 21/07/2017 20:20

Interstellar. I get that there's some portal and that he can pass messages back to his daughter, but why is it all in a bookcase and how did he get there?

stitchglitched · 21/07/2017 20:26

Yeah I'll let them off too because I'm a bit in love with Dick Van Dyke. It's just that I've had to watch it about 20 times in the past week because toddler DD is obsessed with it and I'm noticing lots of plot holes!

MiladyThesaurus · 21/07/2017 20:27

What I want to know is where the (totally awful) ending for Thor: The Dark World cane from. How did Loki come to be pretending to be Odin?

The other films here are supposed to be ambiguous. But this is just like the couldn't be arsed making the whole film and thought the audience wouldn't care.

Nocturnal Animals. Don't want to spoil it but I lost track of what was the book and what was real life

frasersmummy · 21/07/2017 20:41

can I add a tv programme?? st Elsewhere .. were we supposed to think none of it was real ?? just the imagination of an autistic child??

seriously 6 years and none of it was real???

EllaHen · 21/07/2017 20:46

Okay, I haven't reached the end yet, and I've had wine but - Ant Man?

Kids are enjoying it. Suppose that's the main thing.

Also, I remember when my pals and I watched Dead Poets Society circa 1992, I was the only one who blamed the teacher.

EllaHen · 21/07/2017 20:47

Ha ha - 6 year old ds has just said 'pause it ..... I don't really get what's going on.' Yay - dh is explaining. Smile

MandateMandy · 21/07/2017 20:49

One word.......LOST???? Were they ALWAYS in purgatory....why did they get to go to heaven at the end???

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 21/07/2017 20:53

I watched Vanilla Sky in Spanish first (Abre los ojos). I though that was the reason I was struggling with what was going on. I then watched it in English and still found it confusing!

Quite often "That Lovely Lonely Man" is cut out when CCBB is on television. I don't know whether that's due to the continuity issue, or just the fact the film kind of grinds to halt at that point... Lovely song, but it completely stalls the story.

mintbiscuit · 21/07/2017 20:56

Mulholland drive

Shutter island

(I have my own idea but intrigued as to ther people's ideas)

EllaHen · 21/07/2017 20:57

I LOVED Shutter Island.

SleightOfHand · 21/07/2017 20:58

Interstellar. I get that there's some portal and that he can pass messages back to his daughter, but why is it all in a bookcase and how did he get there? It was a wormhole. I watched it a while ago, I'll have to watch it again though, one of my favourite films.

EllaHen · 21/07/2017 21:00

Dh and I watched a dodgy copy of Babel once, which had no subtitles. That was an experience.

mrsRosaPimento · 21/07/2017 21:06

Lost. It was real until they were rescued the first time. When they went back that was purgatory.

Shutter Island. He murdered his wife after she killed their dcs. He was then in denial. The doctor was acting that he was the policeman and Leo was in denial thinking he was. They went through the whole film, trying to jog his memory and face up to what he did. That's why the other patients acted like they did. Like the woman giving him the message to run.

mintbiscuit · 21/07/2017 21:07

EllaHen I loved shutter island too. But was he really crazy OR was he the sane one and they made it seem like he was crazy to keep him there?
