Explain the plot/ending of.....

There are some films that have very confusing plots. Or, the plots are fine but the ending leaves you going "Eh?" Or in extreme cases "WTAF?!!!" So I wanted to start a thread for all of us who were left scratching our heads or chins.

I will start off with some of mine - Inception. Dream within a dream within a what? AND the coin - was the final one real or a dream?

Vanilla Sky/skies? - same sorta shit. Dream - real or not real?

The Matrix - utterly incomprehensible.

Fight Club. Was he schizophrenic and was Marla even real? Was any of it real?

Please feel free to answer and / or share your own.

I didn't get Shutter Island , my DD explained it to me and said he was the mad one .

EllaHen · 21/07/2017 21:18

Yes, he was the mad one. A coping mechanism though. Bloody love DiCaprio.

DreichAgain · 21/07/2017 21:22

Inception was a great film.

But I have no clue what happened and life is too short to watch it again right now!

MandateMandy · 21/07/2017 22:08

Anything made by David Lynch and I'm completely Confused Grin

MandateMandy · 21/07/2017 22:09

Thanks for the Lost explaination. I thought there had to be a cut off point. I think i need to watch it again.

DesperatelySeekingSushi · 21/07/2017 22:14

The only film whereby it lost me and despite being given a full blown thesis with sodding diagrams explaining it still loses me is...Primer
I also loathed Synecdoche whatevs Grin

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 21/07/2017 22:16

Shitter Island annoyed the hell out of me.. Irritatingly I sussed it straightaway and was wondering what all the fuss was about.

I have no idea about Inception.

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 21/07/2017 22:17

Haha, shUtter island

Wholivesinashoe · 21/07/2017 22:22

Seeing as no one has answered the Blair Witch one yet I will: the myth of the Blair witch was that she would take her victims in pairs. She would make one stand in the corner facing the wall while she killed the other. This was covered in the interviewing of locals at the beginning. When the video-holding girl arrived in the house her friend was standing in the corner facing the wall which means.....
THAT SHE WAS ABOUT TO BE KILLED!!!!
(I saw it once, in the cinema, when it first came out. It freaked the bejaysus out of me and I have never watched it since so apologies if I have any details wrong)

ParadiseLaundry · 21/07/2017 22:33

Vanilla Sky - soon after he had his car accident and was disfigured he signed a contract with LE and killed himself. He barely knew Sofia in real life, just their romantic first night where they drew portraits of each other and the disastrous night at the club. He chose a package called Lucid Dream where his life would be spliced from the morning after the club and he would forget everything that really happened and his life would be better, like a dream until a glitch turned it into a nightmare. An unspecified time goes past, maybe a hundred or so years and he is told he can be brought back to life as technology had advanced enough but obviously Sofia is long dead... or he can carry on living his Lucid Dream with the faults corrected. He chose to live.

AlletrixLeStrange · 21/07/2017 22:35

I just came to declare my love for Shutter Island.
I can usually work out films pretty well but even I didn't expect that!

EllaHen · 21/07/2017 22:40

OK, Ant Man was pretty good.

WhatInTheWorld76 · 21/07/2017 22:45

Blair Witch explanation? Anyone care to remind us of that treat of a film's plot/ending/point?

Might rewatch at some point if I can be bothered.

Google them all, you will find plot summaries online which will help Smile

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 21/07/2017 23:58

MandateMandyfrom what remember was no purgatory. Everything that happened on the island was real..even if bizarre lol.

Then flash sideways happened after the whole bomb thing..which I think was paths starting to cross etc which all led to meeting up in the church. But things still going on beside that were real.

Then they all died different times..some on island...some later etc and then all met up and went to heaven.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 22/07/2017 00:00

Though think the season 6 flashes were the purgatory bit but not anything else..polar bear and time travel ended up being real lol

TittyGolightly · 22/07/2017 00:04

Interstellar is an amazing film. The science is around 97% accurate.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 22/07/2017 01:05

Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes is another one that ends weirdly. I understood it, I just didn't like it.

MandateMandy · 22/07/2017 01:15

Defo need to watch Lost again. But I'll probably be 90 by the time I finish and understand it.

SpareASquare · 22/07/2017 01:44

I HATED Shutter Island. The book that is. Then the movie. Dennis Lehane is one of my fave authors.

Reading this thread and seeing so many that liked it, I'm wondering if it's because I never ever suspected. I'm someone that reads the plot WHILE I'm watching something. A terrible trait but I can't stop. No blindsiding me! Grin

Except it did

ladybird69 · 22/07/2017 01:55

I didn't get the end of limitless with Bradley Cooper. What happened?
Also Cabin in the woods, was it supposed to be funny or scary? Couldn't decide!

glitterglitters · 22/07/2017 02:00

@MandateMandy don't try and decide anything by Lynch. Your brain will implode. I mean a woman living in a radiator stamping on sperm?

SerfTerf · 22/07/2017 02:01

Nocturnal Animals. Don't want to spoil it but I lost track of what was the book and what was real life

DD stropped at me for "spoilers" while we ate dinner after seeing it together Smile Apparently she'd been planning to go back to watch again to get it straight in her head. I thought the ambiguity was part of it and was attempting sophisticated critical analysis type dinner conversation Grin

echt · 22/07/2017 02:08

At the end of Cabin in the Woods, the old gods have not been appeased as the sacrificial victims have escaped. As the survivors pass the joint, the first of the old gods surfaces, presumably to destroy the world.

Crazy8 · 22/07/2017 02:24

What happened at the end of The Usual Suspect. I have to admit that I only watched it once but I still don't seem to understand the end.
