Explain the plot/ending of.....

There are some films that have very confusing plots. Or, the plots are fine but the ending leaves you going "Eh?" Or in extreme cases "WTAF?!!!" So I wanted to start a thread for all of us who were left scratching our heads or chins.

I will start off with some of mine - Inception. Dream within a dream within a what? AND the coin - was the final one real or a dream?

Vanilla Sky/skies? - same sorta shit. Dream - real or not real?

The Matrix - utterly incomprehensible.

Fight Club. Was he schizophrenic and was Marla even real? Was any of it real?

Please feel free to answer and / or share your own.

@Crazy8 it was all a construct in the room. All
The story was a construct of details plucked from Items in the room

He was Kaiser Sozay

Gene hunt was a young policeman who had died on duty. He just made himself look old and experienced because he died so young and hadn't lived. The whole series was about letting the two main characters fulfill their destiny and accept they were dying. When they did they went to heaven. All the characters from Gene Hunts world were his imagination.

elphabathegreenone · 22/07/2017 07:21

.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 22/07/2017 07:31

The characters in Gene's world were others that died.

Middleoftheroad · 22/07/2017 07:40

Mullholland Drive for me too and Twin Peakes while we're at it (that David Lynch!)

ememem84 · 22/07/2017 08:41

Oh I liked shutter island.

It took me ages to get the sixth sense. Three times I had to watch it to work it out.

QuietNinjaTardis · 22/07/2017 08:47

The mothman prophecies. Scared the shit out of me and I still don't know how! Wtf was that film about?

applespearsbears · 22/07/2017 08:58

Wholivesinashoe re: Blair Witch - the handprints on the wall on the stairs is a film image I'll never forget!

tiredteddy · 22/07/2017 09:09

I spent weeks confused by the plot of "predestination" can anyone explain that one?

mrsRosaPimento · 22/07/2017 10:14

I didn't realise they had died too! Thank you.

SnickersWasAHorse · 22/07/2017 11:02

We are rewatching Twin Peaks whilst also watching the new series.
The original series isn't nearly as crazy as I remember.

Crazy8 · 22/07/2017 12:55

Glitterglitters. Thanks so much. I'm going to watch the film again this weekend.

Mistoffelees · 22/07/2017 12:59

I don't get how Inception was an open ending, surely if it was real life his kids would be older than they were in his dream/memory but they appear to be exactly the same?

theporcinegrappler · 22/07/2017 13:03

I got bored and gave up on jnterstellar

ijustwannadance · 22/07/2017 13:08

Mist, why would his kids be older? He wasn't actually away that long. The dreams he was stuck in for years were only as long as the flight.

The ending of The Usual Suspects was just perfect. He played it so well.

theporcinegrappler · 22/07/2017 13:10

I didn't get the end of limitless with Bradley Cooper
I found reading the book helped

ScrunchyBook · 22/07/2017 13:18

The car flying at the end of Grease. I always think that's a bit weird

Mistoffelees · 22/07/2017 13:29

That's true ijust, to be fair the whole film irritated me so I just assumed they'd done a cop out "it was all a dream" ending

WinifredAtwellsOtherPiano · 22/07/2017 13:43

How can anyone be confused by The Sixth Sense. If something is sold as "it's a ghost story with a massive twist" then there are only two possible options a) someone you are led to believe is alive is in fact dead b) (rarer) someone you are led to believe is dead is in fact alive.

At that point you just have to spot who it is (hint, the bloke who's suffered a fatal injury is actually dead).

The one that sent me to Wikipedia was Donnie Darko. Great film, but profoundly Confused.

yellowfrontdoor · 22/07/2017 14:01

I always thought with Inception that it didn't matter whether the top stopped or not, he'd made up his mind to go back to his children. He'd stopped caring about being trapped in a dream, because he was happy. That's what I tell myself anyway!
The actual book Shutter Island is amazing & I think answers the questions better than the film!

MipMipMip · 22/07/2017 14:07

With Thor: the Dark World you see a dead soldier left in the waste. Loki had killed him and pretended to be the soldier to go back to Asgard. Not sure what happened to Odin though - presumably that will be revealed in the next one.

MiladyThesaurus · 22/07/2017 14:17

The whole what happened to Odin is really the crux of the matter though.

NotDavidTennant · 22/07/2017 14:28

That's meant to be a cliffhanger for the next film.

PopcornNRedwine · 22/07/2017 15:05

@tiredteddy

Predestination with spoilers

For his final assignment, a top temporal agent must pursue the one criminal that has eluded him throughout time. The chase turns into a unique, surprising and mind-bending exploration of love, fate, identity and time travel taboos.

Ethan Hawke is chasing himself, driven crazy by time travel answers obsessed with himself unknowingly. He is also his own father and mother.

SleightOfHand · 22/07/2017 18:27

I didn't get the end of limitless with Bradley Cooper I've just watched it. I think Bradley coopers character had perfected the drug, well with help from the lab guy. He must have figured out the optimum dose and way to take it. The moral of the story, we aren't enough on our own, we need a drug to enhance us Confused
