What the heck happened at the Oscars?

Cock up or conspiracy?

Emma Stone says she was holding her card so if it was in the envelope it was a duplicate, why would you do that?????

My favourite meme is the one that blames Putin.....

OP posts:
VeryBitchyRestingFace · 27/02/2017 16:15

Ive just heard Emma Stone saying 'I had my card the whole time, I don't want to start anything but...'

Well she obviously does want to cast doubt doesn't she! Particularly as its common knowledge there are two boxes of winner cards etc. I'd expect an actress to know that.

My eyes rolled back in my head when I read her comments.

She should keep her gob shut and stop trying to stir it. Hmm

hollyisalovelyname · 27/02/2017 16:24

I certainly wouldn't blame Warren Beatty.
He knew that there was something amiss.
Faye Dunaway was too quick announcing it.
It's really strange if it was the guy from La La Land that came running over to say Moonlight had won.
Why not an Accademy official?
The whole situation is odd.
Conspiracy theorists what do you think ?

A1Sharon · 27/02/2017 16:35

Emma Stone made those comments straight after it happened, she wasn't aware that there were two sets of envelopes.
The members of Moonlight were told by the man in the headset who was on stage sorting it. There was a huge gang of Moonlight folk some found out before others as some were delivering speeches and unaware a mistake had been made.

BooMooLeonardo · 27/02/2017 16:59

One of either Cullinan or Ruiz, but probably Cullinan, did not dispose of the duplicate and realised too late...ironically given their interview 48 hours before about what would happen if name read out was ever wrong...they claimed they would know when wrong name was announced and go on stage asap (as they memorise the winners).
Brian did do that, along with the correct envelope, but IMHO too late. Someone backstage also saw Warren had the best actress duplicate.
The only question is...why it took them so long to spring into action once the wrong film was announced, a long time being at least two minutes and allowing the Lala speeches to start.
You see Brian go on stage along with a headphones producer but we're onto the third speech by then. Emma Stone mouths oh my God. Third guy falters, says didn't win BTW.
At that point Jordan steps up and because neither Brian, Producer nor Jimmy have taken to the mike, he snatches card out of Beatty's hands for a close-up that No, not kidding.
It was a clusterfuck but I really don't think they were going to cover it up and go with lala, nor that it was for publicity, I just think there was a dazed, confused, panicky frozen rabbits in headlights reaction.
I really wish Warren had been there with Annette, then he could have vocalised what was wrong. You see it non verbally but Faye, thinking it was for tension, says "you're impossible" before blurting.
She said later something vague, along the lines of it being quick and "the card read that way".
Jordan had the card with Emma Stone on it so presumably Faye just focussed on the La La bit.
I cannot believe they just took a punt on the odds.

Really wish that Warren had said "Best film Oscar goes to...Suicide Squad. Now, I have been stalling for a while now in the hope that someone would realize I have the wrong envelope. Can we have another drum roll please?"
He did not convey to Faye what was happening.
The memes are good though.

At least it gave Jimmy an out in terms of not being asked back. It will give host material for next year's.
Still not my favourite Oscar moment though..that would be John Travolta announcing Idina Mendel as Adele Dazeem, bless him.

hollyisalovelyname · 27/02/2017 18:47

How come Moonlight people were on stage if La La Land won????

EachandEveryone · 27/02/2017 18:54

Does jimmy not want to come baxck? I liked him.

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 27/02/2017 18:55

How come Moonlight people were on stage if La La Land won????

The Russians sent them.

Valentine2 · 27/02/2017 19:03

I think it was good to see that behind all that glitzy impossible glamour lies a non-superhuman kind of a setup that is as prone to panic and confusion as the rest of us. I loved the pics of Ryan Gosling enjoying the funny side of it. That's the spirit. It's bad only for the CVs of the people who did it. But I don't think it would be that awful for them either as LOADS of people saw the funny side.

ActuallyThatsSUPREMECommander · 27/02/2017 19:09

For people who don't know - the Best Picture winner card would have said (if La La Land had won)

"LA LA LAND
Fred Berger, Jordan Horowitz, and Marc Platt"

because the Best Picture award goes to the producer(s) of the film in question, who are normally a handful of anonymous people you've never heard of but occasionally do include one of the lead actors. Warren Beatty, as a long time producer and director was more in the loop and aware that Emma Stone was definitely not the sole producer of the movie. Faye Dunaway maybe didn't clock that as quickly.

WipsGlitter · 27/02/2017 19:22

How come Moonlight people were on stage if La La Land won????

They weren't on the stage. They only came up later but there then appeared to be two sets of people, from both films milling about.

I agree Warren B should have had the wherewithal to say "hold on a second, I think I've been given the wrong card".

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 27/02/2017 19:30

I agree Warren B should have had the wherewithal to say "hold on a second, I think I've been given the wrong card".

You wait til you get to 80 and have shagged more people than most of us have seen hot dinners.

ButtonMooooon · 27/02/2017 19:40

I think Emma Stone had the best reaction and said so this will go down in history and be talked about for many years to come. Cool.

Or similar, I am paraphrasing as it was this morning when I heard it and it's been a long day!!!

derxa · 27/02/2017 19:41

I keep watching it and I get an irrational rage about the way Faye Dunaway says, 'La La Land'. They should have worn their specs.

EachandEveryone · 27/02/2017 19:51

Changing the subject but, did Warren ever have a thing with Faye? They were bith stunning werent they? Shame theyve both had obvious work done. Half the theatre looked frozen.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 27/02/2017 20:15

The whole thing is pathetic. The envelope that Beatty and Dunaway were holding clearly said "Best Actress in a Leading Role" on the front. How many brain cells does it take to check what is written on an envelope you are about to open? They knew which Oscar they were presenting. That was the chance for someone who was a bit more with it to say "erm, I seem to have been given the wrong envelope, could someone please bring me the right one?" Before they had even opened it!

How many dollars were they paid for doing that completely crap job?! I'm sorry but they came across as doddery and past it.

Oh well, at least "spec savers" have got their next advert in the bag.

Trainspotting1984 · 27/02/2017 20:20

Paid? You don't get paid for presenting an Oscar 😂

Good to know you would've dealt with it so smoothly though Wink

CurlyhairedAssassin · 27/02/2017 20:29

They get paid in publicity points. They just negatively affected their credibility. Who would trust either of them with presenting an award now? I think Faye is wise to not speak about it. She knows she should have done a more thorough job.

BooMooLeonardo · 27/02/2017 20:30

Warren is 80? Good lord.
Here he is when he wasn't...

TizzyDongue · 27/02/2017 21:36

As a person who's totally ambivalent to Warren Beatty and Faye Whatsit it certainly looks like he passed it over, I don't think he knew but he couldn't read it. Faye then read it quickly (possibly because there'd been enough faffing) I can imagine a glace at a card and seeing the film name was all she needed.

Also don't think that man snatch the card off Warren, well he grabbed it quickly granted. He wanted the situation rectified and people thought he was joking - the card proved he wasn't.

Lucy7400 · 27/02/2017 22:51

Given all the important stuff going in the world I don't think it matters. It was a human error because we are after all human. The oscars are little more than a bunch of lovies giving one another a pat on the back anyway. At least this makes it interesting. Its the only time I have ever had an iota of interest in it.

alazuli · 27/02/2017 23:03

can't stop watching the videos! i feel so bad for the la la land guys. personally i don't think it's fair to blame warren either and that he was passing it on to faye to see if she would notice the mistake - not to pass the buck. she obviously just saw the film's name and pronounced it in a rush.

i'm guessing one or both of those pwc accountants will be getting fired as it sounds like they're the ones to hand over the envelopes. weird that they forgot to discard/destroy the duplicate if that's part of the process.

it's a shame too that moonlight's big moment has been overshadowed.

hippyhippyshake · 27/02/2017 23:08

I blame WB in a way. As said before he could have easily queried it. He obviously can't speak without it being scripted. And yes, I also thought there was a thing between the two of them once upon a time. < off to google>

BooMooLeonardo · 28/02/2017 00:06

It has been confirmed that it was Brian
Cullinan's fault. He's been doing Oscar duty since 2014, is a partner/has been with Price Waterhouse for 30 years. Shortly before giving the duplicate best actress envelope to Warren he had been snapping/tweeting pic of the lovely Emma Stone as she came off the stage with her Oscar.
Poor sod. I hope he doesn't get fired.

daisychain01 · 28/02/2017 06:41

I've just watched the video clip.

It looked as if Beatty read the card, couldn't compute what the card said because it didn't make sense and thought "I'm too old and tired for all this malarkey" and hands it to the woman to deal with Grin

Unfortunately Dunaway just launched headlong into the situation and read the card without thinking.

musicalfrog · 28/02/2017 07:50

he had been snapping/tweeting pic of the lovely Emma Stone

I nearly said I bet someone was distracted by a smartphone this is mostly why I miss/forget things!!
