Cock up or conspiracy?

Emma Stone says she was holding her card so if it was in the envelope it was a duplicate, why would you do that?????

My favourite meme is the one that blames Putin.....

I'm also not sure why it irritated me so much Grin

BattleaxeGalactica · 27/02/2017 09:21

One of those it won't be alright on the night moments Grin

Said to dh someone's head is going to be rolling so hard it'll still be going tonight which is sad but the whole thing has still cheered up my grey old morning Grin

DearMrDilkington · 27/02/2017 09:21

All that money they spend on the Oscars and they can't even announce the winners correctlyGrin.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 27/02/2017 09:35

I can't get over how Warren passes the buck to Faye...cheeky bastard

He OBVIOUSLY realised something was up, but did not have the sense to do a double check and then threw her under the bus!

AND THEN not content with that he couldn't wait to get in front of the microphone to "own up" after the official came on to say the announcement was wrong.

I have only seen the clip on BBC Breakfast though four or five times

Was Emma Stone's award the one directly before? Because surely that's the only way the mistaken envelope theory works?

GavelRavel · 27/02/2017 09:36

see I blame the presenters. why are they paid all that money (lots and lots) if they can't even do a tiny bit of quality control and read the whole card to notice it said a) someone's name as well as the name of the film which surely a best picture card wouldn't? and b) that the card had "best supporting actress" at the bottom not "best picture"

i mean ffs I do on my feet thinking more extensive than that every day at work for a LOT less money than they get. How hard is it to read the card! check if unsure?

MsJuniper · 27/02/2017 09:36

Yes I read that article too and figured it must have been the 2nd envelope. They are the only 2 people who know the outcome - the Academy even tweeted that LLL had won.

Bad form for WB to pass the buck but was he intending to show FD to check if he was imagining it?

MsJuniper · 27/02/2017 09:37

Yes Emma Stone was the award just before - they reversed Actor/Actress this year.

OneWithTheForce · 27/02/2017 09:39

Ok can someone explain what exactly happened? Was the wrong name called out for an award?

Maudlinmaud · 27/02/2017 09:44

I can see how and why they didn't stop the presentation and ask if this was kosher. Warren and Faye are old school and the show must go on is ingrained on them. jazz hands but this was so embarrassing.
Why do people think it was a conspiracy?

GavelRavel · 27/02/2017 09:45

Emma stone won Best Supporting Actress for LA La Land, went up and got her award and took her envelope with her. Sat down. Next category was Best Picture. The presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Runaway somehow got what they thought was the next envelope for Best Picture and opened it. It was seemingly a duplicate of the one before (there must be 2 copies of each envelope) so said "Emma Stone, La La Land" and at the bottom "Best Supporting Actress" . He was unsure, passed it to Faye Dunaway and she read out "La La Land" when Moonlight actuator won Best Picture.

BakeOffBiscuits · 27/02/2017 09:45

One Have you read the threadGrin

Lala land was called out by Faye Dunnaway as the winner of "Best film"

Everyone from LaLa land comes up to accept the award and they start giving their thank you speeches.

Someone then comes on stage and says it was actually Moonlight which was the winner.

What had happened was the wrong envelope was given to Faye Dunnaway- she was given the envelope for 'Best Actress' award. The card said 'Emily Watson for LaLaLand' so Faye just read out LaLaLand as the winner of Best Film.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 27/02/2017 09:56

Um the card said 'Emma Stone for La La Land' Grin
I can't believe WB didn't have the presence of mind to say, 'hold on a minute, this is Best Actress card.' I think they need to start using people with live tv exoerience who can think on their feet instead of people who are good at reading scripts. Still, worse things happen at sea etc!

OneWithTheForce · 27/02/2017 10:01

*One Have you read the

Yes that's why I had to ask! Grin very confusing.

Thanks for the clarification bake and gavel

NotJanine · 27/02/2017 10:04

There must be an interview with him afterwards where he explains his thought process. Or did he sneak out the back door?

I haven't actually heard who won any of the other awards

MsJuniper · 27/02/2017 10:08

While they were getting Moonlight on stage WB took the mic and tried to explain what happened. It is just so weird that they didn't say, we're not sure this is the right card, please hold for a moment. But maybe they figured LLL was a shoo-in, or it was a misprint?

Apparently he went straight to Barry Jenkins afterwards (director of Moonlight) to show him the incorrect card he'd been given.

Trainspotting1984 · 27/02/2017 10:14

I can't blame WB tbh and don't think he threw FD under the bus.

He opened the envelope, didn't announce it, he looked confused, looked at FD and the presenter and the stage people for help but the audience and FD were getting annoyed with this thinking he was delaying and passing judgement on whatever the winner was (his confused face looked a bit "I don't agree) so he showed it to Faye and she took one look and announced La la land. She didn't even realise he was uncertain.

Thefitfatty · 27/02/2017 10:14

Regardless of how it happened I think both LLL and Moonlight handled the awkward moment really well. That was some classy stuff right there.

Trainspotting1984 · 27/02/2017 10:19

Very very classy

hollyisalovelyname · 27/02/2017 10:20

Faye Dunaway just jumped in and read it. I felt she got impatient and almost grabbed it to get on with the announcement.
Warren Beatty knew something was not right.
Very odd for such a carefully ( I would think) choreographed show.
Just shows even the best can cock it up.
We can all take heart Smile

user1486915549 · 27/02/2017 10:57

I am just amazed that warren didn't have the experience to ask for clarification/ someone to check it. You could see from his face that he knew it was wrong. Very silly if he just didn't want to lose face.surely he didn't think the organisers would just carry on with the wrong winner !

hellooooooomama · 27/02/2017 11:31

Holly the last two lines of your post is what we should all take away from this!

yorkshirepuddingandroastbeef · 27/02/2017 13:06

Great PR for PWC. NOT!!! Grin

kittytom · 27/02/2017 13:10

I agree Holly. There but for the grace of god... I am just glad I didn't go into oscars admin.

TizzyDongue · 27/02/2017 13:18

Why are people saying it was the envelope for best supporting actress? Emma Stone won best actress in a leading role.

Best actress in a supporting role was for a film called Fences.

I'm going to have to watch a clip instead of just reading about it!

A1Sharon · 27/02/2017 14:56

why on earth would anyone say Warren threw Faye under the bus?
He was clearly straightaway aware that something wasn't right. He checked in the envelope, looked to the side of the stage for help, then clearly shows it to Faye in a 'what do you make of this?' vibe and she blurts out La La land, choosing to ignore that it says Emma Stone for LaLa Land, which is what alerted Warren that something wasn't right. Faye was more to blame than him, but I wouldn't blame either of them. In the heat of the moment, millions watching, under the lights, the worlds media poised for the sound of your voice....what do you do?!?
The host (Jimmy Kimmel?) was completely out of his depth, I felt.
