am on the hunt for 'lovely films' after watching Steve Martin's Shopgirl at the weekend

they must be
a) lovely to look at
b) intelligent
c) not miserable

am trying to cheer self up with nice films after too much CSI so any suggestions much appreciated

but anyone who mentions The English Patient will have their Maltesers confiscated as it is a huge pile of wank

I always love watching 'Much ado about nothing' (the Kenneth Branagh version), especially in the winter, as it looks gorgeous (set in Tuscany, I think), has lovely language and costumes, and a happy ending. But I appreciate that Ken and Em aren't necessarily everyone's cup of tea.

etre et avoir lovely but a documentary more than a film. Great though.

foxinsocks · 23/01/2007 11:02

oh gawd, I sobbed throughout etre et avoir. Can still hear poor Valentin crying for his mother.

french films generally tick those boxes

Enid · 23/01/2007 11:06

The philedelphia story
Funny Girl
It could happen To you (nicholas gage and bridget fonda, set in NY, lovely, sweet, romantic)

Molesworth · 23/01/2007 11:06

Etre et Avoir = touching, poignant but not sobworthy (unless pregnant at time of watching perhaps)
