There is something really cathartic about a good, sad film.

Any recommendations?

Pay it forward and Marley and Me

Proper ugly cry films

eurochick · 15/05/2016 06:51

I rarely cry but just watched Room on a plane and the tears were streaming!

namelessposter · 15/05/2016 06:51

How about 'What Dreams My Come'. Even more poignant now, given the mental-health driven suicide Sad

PalaceResident · 15/05/2016 06:56

I proper wept at brave heart when he roars "freedom" at the end the first time I watched it.

My little sister and I used to watch a movie called ladder 49 with Joaquín Phoenix every time I returned to England after a trip home to The north of Ireland. We cried our eyes out every time, it was a good way to cathart our sadness at separating again (I was in my 20s and she was a kid)...

I'm not a dog person but Marley and Me had me in tears from way before the 'sad' bit began.... you just knew it was coming.

Will never watch it again and will advise the kids not to watch it. Can't be doing with that much sadness.

AI
The Flowers of War
Grave of the Fireflies

BubsAndMoo · 15/05/2016 07:51

Oh yes definitely cried at AI and The Impossible.

Thinking I might watch Room tonight now - I loved the book. Why do we do it to ourselves???

Lourae · 15/05/2016 07:52

I love this film, never come across anyone who has seen it. First watched it when I was 6 and sobbed my little heart out. One of the saddest films ever.

Lourae · 15/05/2016 07:53

^ who will love my children.
Also Moulin Rouge gets me every time.

Widdykinkles · 15/05/2016 08:00

Amour had me sobbing for most of it

Widdykinkles · 15/05/2016 08:01

Agree about moulin rouge also, thought it was just me!

Lourae · 15/05/2016 08:04

REVENGE with Kevin Costner, forgot about this one. It's a great thriller, but oh my god it breaks your heart. I need to watch this again soon.

Lourae · 15/05/2016 08:11

Ok my last one- Fried green tomatoes at the whistle stop cafe. 😢

NinjaTwat · 15/05/2016 08:16

I absolutely love the film One Day. I think I'll buy the book as I've never read it.

Mrscaindingle · 15/05/2016 08:27

The Champ .." Wake up Daddy" ..was the first film I proper sobbed to, I was babysitting my siblings at the time and my mum and dad thought something terrible had happened when they came back and saw my big red puffy face Grin

My friends and I had to sit in the cinema after the credits of Truly Madly Deeply to compose ourselves.

I'm going to watch some of these suggestions, am feeling in need of a good cry too at the moment.

babyinthacorner · 15/05/2016 08:38

I'm a very passionate cat person - can't stand dogs - but Markey and me made me bawl my eyes out! And my DH. And he doesn't cry. Ever.
The Notebook also made him cry and I'm under strict instructions to never put it on when he's in the near vicinity ever again Grin

For me, I just need to watch the first 10 minutes of Up. So beautiful and sad.

Pollyputhtekettleon · 15/05/2016 08:38

My sisters keeper. Holy shit I never cry at anything and then I watched this on a plane. Totally embarrassing! I was heaving crying and had to stop the film 3 times to calm down. Never again. Actually since I had kids I refuse to watch anything that is an emotional wank. Everything seems too scary now. I don't want to experience any of it.

neonrainbow · 15/05/2016 08:45

Black beauty... At pretty much all of it. Also the old lassie film when the little border terrier died and all he was trying to do was protect his master. In fact anything where an animal dies or is doing something noble gets me. Like homeward bound when shadow appears over the hill and you thought he didn't make it. Very embarrassing crying my eyes out while watching it with dsc!

I did cry at marley and me but it cut a bit close to home to how i felt with two dogs I've lost. I never want to watch it again.

Ladybirdturd · 15/05/2016 08:46

Oh i forgot about who will love my children, it is occasionally on true movies.

neonrainbow · 15/05/2016 08:47

Oh yes pay it forward destroyed me! The book and the film!

The book ending to my sister's keeper was worse than the film. I felt like id been punched in the stomach.

HelloWadeKinsella · 15/05/2016 08:55

Has anybody watched Miss You Already? I put that on thinking it would be a nice Drew Barrymore comedy - I was WRONG. I don't think I've ever cried so much at a film!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 15/05/2016 08:59

Whoever mentioned Inside Out - I had forgotten about that! I cried at it too and so did DS (7).

ARichVernacular · 15/05/2016 09:00

Remembered another one - Lilya 4-Ever :(

Bridges of Madison County.

I just watch clips on YouTube when I need a good weep.
