There is something really cathartic about a good, sad film.

Any recommendations?

The burning man (starring Mathew Goode).

This is another level of ugly crying, I felt I needed some therapy afterwards.

vladthedisorganised · 16/05/2016 13:17

Another one - Rabbit Proof Fence - "I lost one"

Fedupofallthemud · 16/05/2016 13:54

Dancer in the dark. Beautiful film but incredibly sad

murphys · 16/05/2016 14:07

I am not really sobby, but distinctly remember sobbing in the movies as a kid watching My Girl, and really any dog movie. Chestnut is one of them, of course as well as Hatchiko. Bridges of Madison Country was a bit of a tearjerker too. Clint is far from being a dog I know Grin...

Jmangel · 16/05/2016 14:21

Oh god yes, the bedroom Emma Thompson scene in Love Actually KILLS me !
What is this Hatchi dog film - almost scared to ask.

CauliflowerBalti · 16/05/2016 14:49

I avoid films that I know will properly make me cry. Les Miserables - clue is in the name, no need. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas - the book destroyed me, no need. The Road - read this when my son was newborn, RIDICULOUSLY HARROWING, just no need. Incendiary - breaks my heart in book form, don't need to see the film.

I'm not good at misery porn.

BikeRunSki · 16/05/2016 15:01

Toy Story 3

CotedePablo · 16/05/2016 15:02

To whoever asked if Still Alice is worth watching - yes it is. I'd a blubfest at it, and I'm a hard-hearted old biddie. Superb acting, and just gently sad.

RebeccaCloud9 · 16/05/2016 16:14

Yes to Interstellar. And the Notebook every single time.

ScarlettSahara · 16/05/2016 16:33

Toy Story 3 - me too. Think for me it's because of Andy growing up & letting go of childhood 😰
Jane Eyre. - " Do you think because I am poor & plain....?" Also the bit where Mr Rochester says he feels like there is an invisible cord between him & Jane which if cut would cause him to inwardly bleed.
Railway Children- yes it's the "Daddy - My Daddy" bit
Schindler's List
Sophie's Choice
Goodbye Mr Chips - agree I prefer the Robert Donat version
The Mayor of Casterbridge
The Piano- my DB asked if I was alright!

Dancergirl · 16/05/2016 16:51

Stepmom (even though I've seen it so many times)
Railway Children (my daddy...)
My Girl

And one very recent one I saw with dh on Saturday - Eye in the Sky

momb · 16/05/2016 16:53

Inside Out. Had to stop the car on the way home from the cinema. Scared the kids to death.
The Book Thief. Took me by surprise as I knew and loved the book but the film just hit some nerve I didn't know was exposed. Really wracking sobs, not just leaky eyes (which can happen in most films, happy or sad)

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 16/05/2016 17:32

Just remembered one. I Am Legend. When he has to put his dog down and his grief afterwards.

Iknownuffink · 16/05/2016 17:38

I have never managed to watch Sophie's Choice right through to the end.

Madam X
Pay It Forward

Too many to mention, I even cry at feel good movies.

Lex64 · 16/05/2016 18:04

Haven't got time now to go through all the messages now - that'll be later when my feet are up! but just in case these haven't been mentioned... my personal favourites, The Way We Were, Robert Redford and Barbara Streisand in fab form, every single time the last scene is a box of tissues. And, Imitation of Life - putting the drama into melodrama

NeverbuytheDailyMail · 16/05/2016 19:10

About Time was the most recent ugly cry - but it's all because of Nick Cave's Into My Arms!!! I weep every time I hear it.

NeverbuytheDailyMail · 16/05/2016 19:12

When I was wee - i remember bawling at The Champ!!

WhiteWriting · 16/05/2016 19:38

The Hours - oh God the crying, I think I pulled a muscle!

babyinthacorner · 16/05/2016 20:04

I've remembered another one - Tangled! The very end where she's reunited with her parents. The look on her Mother's face... And it's all done without words. So beautiful.
I watched it a few weeks after DD was born and was in absolute bits.
The song on the boat makes me cry too. As does the Let It Go sequence in Frozen. Every single time.
And don't get me started on Dumbo!!!

LateToThis · 16/05/2016 20:11

Another vote for the Railway Children. Book or film, doesn't matter. I confused the heck out of my children by dissolving into a gibbering wreck when I read it to them - I'm not a crier!

LateToThis · 16/05/2016 20:14

Baconyum is there a Flowers for Algernon film?! I never knew - it's utterly my favourite book ever. I think that would finish me off...

MrsDeathOfRats · 16/05/2016 20:22

I am Sam. Everytime. cries a little thinking about it

ShowOfHands · 16/05/2016 20:37

I don't cry at films but the book of Les Mis and the stage show or even the original soundtrack slay me.

Brokeback Mountain fractured my heart. There's some ragged part of me still grieving for them.
