There is something really cathartic about a good, sad film.

Any recommendations?

Damn you, fireandbrimstone Wink - I'm just going to have to watch What we did on our holidays now, because I looked it up, and it has David Tennant in it. I'm a sucker for punishment it seems...

PlateSpinningFrenzy · 15/05/2016 22:25

I agree re. Green Mile. Also recommend the Bridges of Madison County for a real sob-fest 😭

PalcumTowder · 15/05/2016 22:45

Earthlings. It doesn't have a happy ending though. I watched it tonight and sobbed my way through - and I hardly ever cry.

Jmangel · 15/05/2016 22:57

Life is Beautiful
Meet Joe Black

Jmangel · 15/05/2016 22:59

Never seen Sophie's Choice but just watched that clip and definitely didn't sob cry - more cold hand of fear gripping my heart - horrendous.

pastizzi · 15/05/2016 23:05

Bridges of Madison
Stepmom
Philadelphia (the home video footage at the end nearly finished me off)
Shadowlands...my eyes were swollen all the next day after a sob fest of epic proportion
Beaches
Terms of Endearment...blubbed from start to finish

Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence...25 years since I saw it and I still remember the hours of crying that followed

EveryoneElsie · 15/05/2016 23:09

Schindlers List. Its the only film I cry to.

Kelpie78 · 15/05/2016 23:18

Little women and Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop cafe.

TwirlsInTwirlsOutAgain · 16/05/2016 00:49

Titanic. I cry like an absolute baby when the Dads all get left behind and have to wave their families off onto the lifeboats. Sad
The end of Armageddon.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/05/2016 00:59

Cauliflower - oh me too for HTTYD2 - definitely!

And I cry endlessly while reading books. Yes to Anne of Green Gables (and many of the others in the series).

The only film my DH has truly cried at is Dances With Wolves. I've never seen it myself, but he really identifies with it because of losing his Dad in his teens.

SealSong · 16/05/2016 01:18

Lilya 4 Ever.
Had me sobbing. It's very bleak but a must see.

needsleep86 · 16/05/2016 01:18

My weepy films are linked to the music. If I hear the music then the tears start to fall.
Up (first bit)
Captain Corelli's Mandolin
The King and I
Love story (even my husband cried)
Love Actually (Emma Thompson bedroom scene)

Oh and City of Angels

lottieandmia2 · 16/05/2016 02:03

Terms of Endearment
The boy in the striped pyjamas
Also Forrest Gump when Jenny dies and he talks to her grave :(

Baconyum · 16/05/2016 03:16

I don't always cry at the same things as others. But cry at things others perhaps wouldn't.

Eg
Officer and a gentleman - I got nowhere else to go
Marley and me - the mc scene caught me out too, perhaps more likely to affect those of us who've experienced it.
Stepmom - I'll hate her if you want me to

I personally don't like it's a wonderful life or love story.

Though I agree with many of these.

Yyy to imitation of life, who will love my children, madame x, in a lonely place (lesser known humphrey bogart film), Milk, flowers for Algernon, surprised no mention of Kramer vs Kramer yet, three colours blue, ma vie en rose, terms of endearment.

About time and what we did on our holiday completely caught me out! (Buggers Sad)

RainIsAGoodThing · 16/05/2016 03:20

The only films I've ever sobbed to were The Notebook and AI. The bit where she's trying to lose him in the woods Sad

CheerfulYank · 16/05/2016 03:48

I've only seen that one clip of Sophie's Choice (while pregnant like a real genius) and I could not stop crying for almost a literal 24 hours. DH was getting seriously concerned he was going to have to take me to the dr. I'd think of it and be off again. She's such a good actress and it's so terrifying and unfair. How could anyone think they'd have the right?!

Besides the baby I was pregnant with i had two children, an older boy and a younger girl, and it just resonated too deeply with me. I'll never forget it and I'll never watch the whole thing.

TinyTear · 16/05/2016 09:04

has anyone mentioned Room?

TinyTear · 16/05/2016 09:04

Interstellar also make me cry

AButterflyLightsBesideUs · 16/05/2016 09:22

The Rabbit Hole. Heartrending portrayal of child bereavement from the mother's perspective.

ArmySal · 16/05/2016 09:35

AI doesn't make me cry, but it does leave me with a gloomy feeling.
I DO cry at:
The first 10 minutes of Up.
The funeral scene in My Girl.
When Elliot thinks ET is dead.
My sister's keeper, the 'seat on the bus, so I can wave to you' part.
The red coat in Schindler's list.
The home video montage with the song 'Philadelphia' by Neil Young playing at the end of Philadelphia has destroyed me since I first watched it at 15.
Above all though, Hachi: A dog's tale rendered me a sobbing wreck, couldn't compose myself.

Daren't watch Marley & me.

AButterflyLightsBesideUs · 16/05/2016 09:36

Agree with Stepmom, My Sister;s Keeper and Life is Beautiful

Also, embarrassingly - The Little mermaid. The grief on her father's face as he transforms her to a human so she can be with her prince, and knows he has lost her

TinyTear · 16/05/2016 09:59

oh yes, Up is terrible for crying... even worse since my miscarriages

WanderingTrolley1 · 16/05/2016 10:09

The green mile.
The color purple.
The English patient.

frecklesagogo · 16/05/2016 10:50

The opening sequence of UP! and The Book Thief. Prepare for swollen eyes.

Janeymoo50 · 16/05/2016 12:35

Who Will Love My Children.

It's my go to film for a sob fest.
