There is something really cathartic about a good, sad film.

Any recommendations?

Apologies Boiling, I had forgotten that part of the film, and that it would have been triggering for some. Flowers for you, and others who have experienced the same.

I struggled to explain the start of Up to an ex's (much younger) sister, I found it upsetting and I've cried at it ever since. I also find it difficult to see how lost, alone and... fragile? the main character seems when he hits the man. I think it should be essential viewing for children, it really shows how the elderly are 'real' people, with real lives, loves and losses. It's a good opportunity to help combat ageism.

I have never even allowed myself to watch or read Warhorse - even though several people have assured me that the horse doesn't die - I just can't do it.

There were a few things I saw as a teenager (talking 16-ish here) that have stayed with me for life. One was Escape From Sobibor - sure, I knew about the Holocaust - but it was the first time I'd come face-to-face with the horror of it on screen.

The other was Vietnam, which was the Australian one with Nicole Kidman in it. Again, I knew a bit about the Vietnam war, but that affected me deeply.

They both made me ugly-cry for hours - I've seen many holocaust and Vietnam films since - but those two stick with me, it's like I lost some of my innocence watching them.

The impossible - blubber the whole way through
I am Sam - go from tears of laughter to full on ugly crying in seconds
Man on fire - denzel is amazing in this and makes me cry every time
Moulin rouge gets me every time as well

Another vote for Hachi, DH was about to make fun of DDs snotty sobs until he looked at me the pair of us yelled at him to leave the room Grin

Keeping the animal theme going DS could never watch the end of Homeward Bound and don't watch Lilo and Stitch if you're in the middle of a bitter divorce. I had to walk through the cinema with irrepairable make up and 2 kids who weren't happy that their trip to pizza hut had been cancelled.

tothesea · 15/05/2016 15:47

I used to love a good ugly cry but I find I just can't do it to myself anymore. I just get too upset..for days afterwards. I tried to watch Sarah's Key recently.. well I managed about 10 mins and I still cry thinking about it.
Marley and Me on the other hand..I am a dog lover and should have cried at this but it was so obviously manipulated to make me cry it left me cold!

isithotinhereorisitjustme · 15/05/2016 15:48

One Day gets me every time - it somehow manages to stay on the right side of cheesy (just) and be charming. The soundtrack 'helps' too.

Field of Dreams. Burt Lancaster and the dad stuff right at the end. My dad died when I was 12 and, well, whole box of tissues required. Railway children and a certain scene in The Princess Bride ditto.

Like many others, Marley and me and, also like many others, War Horse sits unwatched on the shelf.

The itv version of Goodnight Mr Tom. When he refuses to let go of his baby sisters body when Tom rescues him. I was pregnant when I first watched it. I swear the hormones made my baby very jumpy.

ClopySow · 15/05/2016 16:25

I cry at everything these days. Gingerstuff your description of your family watching 'marley and me' made me cry.

'The champ' had me in tatters in the days before i cried at everything. My friends were concerned about how much i sobbed at 'Shindlers list' it was a bit embarrassing.

I went to see 'room' with my ex MIL and ex SIL. We all sobbed our hearts out.

I love a good cry i do.

My step dad always cries at 'Kung fu panda' in the scene with Po and his Dad. I think he empathises with being the real but not real Dad. It's very lovely considering how emotionless he can seem sometimes.

LumpsMum · 15/05/2016 16:25

Beaches, Still Alice (started crying just telling my MIL about it the day after watching it for the first time) and - admittedly really, REALLY odd one - Xanadu Blush

ClopySow · 15/05/2016 16:27

Oh god. Goodnight Mr Tom ends me. Every time. Sob.

Janetizzy30 · 15/05/2016 16:36

The notebook Sad cried at the end x

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 15/05/2016 16:43

The movie Anne of Green Gables - the bit where Matthew dies. Even my step-dad had a tear in his eye, and I've never seen him cry at anything.

flissfloss65 · 15/05/2016 17:39

I cry easily but normally manage to silently cry at the cinema. But Hachi had me and my ds really sobbing, tears streaming down our faces. I was exhausted by the end of the film!

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 15/05/2016 17:41

Is Still Alice good then? It keeps catching my eye on Netters but I'm yet to commit. :o Haha. I said Netters instead of Netflix. I'm so going on the list of cringe.

RortyCrankle · 15/05/2016 17:53

Truly Madly Deeply I cry all the way through.

also the death scene in Death in Venice, the music is from Mahler's Fifth, always gets me sobbing.

JingsAndCrivens · 15/05/2016 18:00

Oh yes, definitely Who Will Love My Children.

A masterclass in cynical heartstring pulling and emotional manipulation. But I fall for it. The dying mother, having to find new homes for her 47 children before she snuffs it, the ginger one that no one wants. And her waste of space husband.

Waaaaah!

CheerfulYank · 15/05/2016 18:13

I tend to cry just as much at touching things as I do sad.

I didn't cry at the Anne of Green Gables movie but I do at the book, especially the part where Anne is hurt and being carried home. Matilda sees and goes running to her and realizes that "Anne was dearer to her than anything on earth." I'm tearing up just writing that! They'd both been so unloved before they found each other.

Also the cartoon Balto, based on a true story of sled dogs in Alaska who raced to get medications for a city during a...I think it was the flu epidemic? It begins and ends with a live action older woman in the park with her granddaughter, telling the story. Anyway at the end you realize the grandmother was the little girl on the story, and she's come to the park to see the statue of the sled dog. She just looks and says "thank you, Balto. I'd have been lost without you." Oh my lord. I cannot.

CelticPromise · 15/05/2016 18:14

Oh yes Once Were Warriors is a weeper. And an amazing film. DH and I both sobbed at Inside Out. I love a good cry, I find it very cathartic.
