Anyone got any recommendation of good scary films? I haven't seen one that's actually scared me for a long time.

OP posts:

Definitely Wolf creek... watched it just before my first visit to Australia!

BitOfFun · 26/01/2016 03:27

I'm surprised that Fallen hasn't been mentioned- I found that quite scary. The original version of Dark Water was really good too. It does totally depend on what you 'enjoy' being scared by though, I agree.

BitOfFun · 26/01/2016 03:37

The Visit looks like a good combination of thrills and laughs.

BitOfFun · 26/01/2016 03:51

The Perfect Host, starring David Hyde Pierce, is a real gem. Great for anyone who enjoyed the kind of menace of Misery, or who wants to see Niles from Frasier in quite a new light. Great fun.

BitOfFun · 26/01/2016 04:17

El Orfanato, or The Orphanage, a Guillermo Del Toro film, is excellent. I also remember seeing one with Robert DeNiro called Hide And Seek which is worth a watch, especially if you liked -or, conversely, were disappointed by- The Babadook.

BitOfFun · 26/01/2016 04:37

Hard Candy is a good watch too- it's a basic play-format drama where your sympathies constantly shift. Nothing supernatural, but the tension-building is superb.

KeyserSophie · 26/01/2016 05:00

The Hole. It's not really scary so much as disturbing.

Glee ruined Saw for me, as made me realise what a ridiculous idea it is really. I did like the first one though, at the time. Then they got ridiculous.

Don't really understand why people watch the stuff like Hostel.

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 26/01/2016 06:52

Jeepers Creepers scares the heck out of me, so does Wolf Creek

A film called The Toothfairy had me scared of the dark for years, I used to run from room to room turning the lights on/off so I could 'make it to bed' safely when DH worked nights.

GameOfGroans · 26/01/2016 07:04

Another vote for The Orphanage! That film stayed with me long after it finished Shock

SecretLocker · 26/01/2016 09:08

The Treatment.
Utterly bleak, despairing, nauseating. It affected my mood for days afterwards.

FireCrotch · 26/01/2016 09:43

The Entity is brill. It's free on Amazon Prime too.
Everyone said It Follows was shit but I was scared but then again I have nightmares that I'm being followed by someone or something that I just have a glimpse of before it hides out of sight so it struck a chord with me.
Another one that I liked but no one else did was When The Lights Went Out. Very scary.
We watched The Visit the other day. Quite a good twist.

dustarr73 · 26/01/2016 09:47

The Perfect Host is a gr eat film. WAS TRYING to think of the name of it.

bedelia · 26/01/2016 10:12

I second Eden Lake, Event Horizon, and most of the Japanese/Korean horror films. Not the American remakes though, with the exception of Ring (which I watched on VHS before I owned a DVD player. Never again!).

I think The Babadook may have already been mentioned - really haunting film, especially knowing you can purchase an edition of the book used in the film.

I watched Hush recently - recognising lots of the landmarks along the M1 made it all the more scary for me.

The French film, Switchblade Romance, was really rather good. While googling to remember the name, I came across Martyrs - has anyone seen it? Having just seen the brutal trailer, I think I'd rather know whether or not it's worth it before settling down to watch!

gemdrop84 · 26/01/2016 10:37

Bedelia, I've seen Martyrs, it is brutal, really brutal but a good watch and I liked the story. Not for the faint hearted. The French seem very good at creating brutal horror films.

Crazypetlady · 26/01/2016 10:57

YY to Jeepers creepers and the song!

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 26/01/2016 12:22

Yes, the song Jeepers creepers- I can no longer listen to without thinking of the film.

FlowersAndShit · 26/01/2016 13:17

The hills have eyes is disturbing - I thoguht the re-make was better.

misstiredbuthappy · 26/01/2016 13:37

I love horrors.

I've got the day off and im making my way through some of the films mentioned up thread.

Currently watching Black Christmas. Don't want to give anything away but will someone come and check in my attic for me Hmm Its really windy here and its knocking hell out off my letterbox im a tad jumpy !

DramaQueenofHighCs · 26/01/2016 20:18

Not a movie - but the 'Wire In The Blood' series (with Robson Green) Based on the Val McDermid 'Tony Hill' books was brilliant. It's just the thought that people like the criminals in that could (and probably do) actually exist that is so scary! Love watching them on dvd but always feel very unsettled after them - especially in one where there is a string of murdered children being found in places where other children had disappeared from years ago. (Such as a school playground and a kids bedroom shudder)
Well worth a watch and you can find them pretty cheap on eBay too!

DramaQueenofHighCs · 26/01/2016 20:21

Talking of the bbc christmas ghost stories what about 'Lost Hearts'? Proper terrifying IMHO!

(Clip of it here though I think the whole thing is on YouTube somewhere!)

MARTYRS is a fantastic film. A very difficult and disturbing watch though.

The M R James Ghost Stories for Christmas are brilliantly creepy. My favourite is The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral.

I didn't really get CREEP, I found it more boring than scary.

TOADfan · 26/01/2016 21:51

I have seen a good 80% of these movies and don't find them scary.

I grew up watching horrors so it takes a lot to scare me. I prefer psychological thrillers now as they stay with me longer and disturb me (which I like)

I do think the hole is one to watch. Probably only horror movie which stayed with me after from disturbed point of view is 1408.
