Anyone got any recommendation of good scary films? I haven't seen one that's actually scared me for a long time.

The Fourth Kind

Have watched It Follows and The Conjuring (both on Amazon Prime) following the recommendations here, and they do indeed have some very creepy moments, especially the latter.

I thought Oculus was crap. Not scary at all.

What i hate about horror films is the premise is good and they could do something different but then halfway through it just follows the obvious path.It gets boring.

^ I think Annabel plays on your emotions as a mum, that's what got me.

Sinister really effected me. I couldn't sleep for days.

I was also terrified of annabel but that's because I'm petrified of dolls Blush

There's an Australian film I saw as a teenager called Long Weekend about a young couple go away to a deserted beach to try to rescue their relationship. Weird stuff starts to happen. Perhaps I saw it at a suggestible age (it only gets 6.7 on IMDB) but it really, really freaked me out

Me too. I've never seen it in the cinema but it terrified me in the cinema.

You might like Wake in Fright. It's a long lost gem of Australian film from the 70s. I saw it with my husband and had to leave the cinema. It's not a supernatural film but the threat of impending evil about to break is terrifying.

Oh and I'd say Insidious and Insidious 2. And The Woman in Black... I think I prefer films that have weird parts in though because... Daniel Radcliffe... Horror? Confused but I found it more intriguing than anything.

I'd recommend The Babadook, like a PP. I don't find many "scary" films scary either but that made me jump! Turn the lights off if you watch it, though, much better!

And I'd say The Devil Inside, came out in 2012, although sounds corny, it is a bit disturbing in bits.

I really need to watch "rec"

The McPherson Tape, which can be found on Youtube, a "real time" homevideo style film about a family at a remote location who are visited by aliens. Of course some conspiracy theorists think it's real.

Nosferatu scared the SHIT out of me as a child.

Can't believe no one has said The entity which is based on s true story. That really bothered me and I had to turn it off 🙈🙈😳

Not sure I would classify them as scary but I thought Cloverfield (original) and War Of The Worlds (Remake) had a great atmosphere of tension and threat.

Some have been mentioned, but
Paranormal Activity
The Hills Have Eyes (original)
Rec (original)
The Thing (1982).

Picnic at Hanging Rock had some creepy moments.

Rec (original) is the only film I've watched as an adult where I had to force myself to watch it to the end - that final scene? Scary biscuits!

I like a good horror film too.

It Follows
In Fear
The Japanese originals of The Ring/Grudge/Dark Water (I assume these have already been mentioned)
The Visit (I am torn on this one, DH thinks it's really scary)
The Paranormal Activity films scare me, but the last one is pants
Babadook
Goodnight Mommy

I have not seen Martyrs, Grotesque or American Mary as they're a bit more gory while I prefer suspense/supernatural but friends who are horror fans rate them.

Houseeveryweekend - interested that you included The Machinist. I didn't think of it as a horror film, but was completely gripped by it. Christian Bale is incredible in it, I know hardly anyone that's seen it. Always recommending it.

oh and I agree with whoever said 'Threads'! its horrific! I suppose some sci fi is actually a lot more scary than so called horror films... I had more nightmares about 'The Road' than I ever have had about any horror movie

ooh I love scary films...
Antichrist (incredibly disturbing)
Wake Wood
Dead Girl
It Follows
Martyrs
Switchblade Romance
A Tale Of Two Sisters
The Machinist
The Canal
Don't Look Now
Rosemarys Baby
Lost Highway
The Thing
Event Horizon
28 Days Later (I also found Sunshine quite scary even though its not really a horror film)
and I actually found The Others really scary!
People say Babadook is really scary but I just found it ridiculous which was a shame as it started off quite interesting

Well I'm peeking round from behind my cushion to say thanks to those who recommended Babadook, which I had previously dismissed for no better reason than the childish sounding name but all the comments on this thread made me rethink.
Proper watching through the hands moments for both me and DH, who actually stayed awake for the entire movie (which is as much of a shocker).
I didn't understand the ending till we checked out a couple of blogs online afterwards... And now I'd definitely watch it again!

Just watched slender ( about the slender man myth) it was absolutely shite. Literally nothing happens. Do not bother . Hmm
