Awesome!

I was not disappointed.

Now I won't post any spoilers, but I can't speak for anyone else on the thread, so proceed carefully. ...and there are a few plot points that probably won't stay secret for long, so get thee to a cinema!

Lots of old school star wars references and characters, lots of lovely new aliens to enjoy. Old cast great, new cast even better.

I was a little disappointed that of the hundreds of fans who turned out for the midnight showing, only a handful were women. Where were you all? The main character is a bad-ass lady, so there's no excuse that this is a boys film.

All in all, a few hours well spent. 10/10.
Before I say more, what did anyone else think?

I didn't get a Cumberbatch feeling at all, not sure who you mean. The only weakness for me was Kylo Ren. The character was a good idea but I thought the acting a bit weak.

Loved that the billing went -

Harrison Ford
Mark Hamill
Carries Fisher

Given the amount of screen time I can't help feel that the second on the list was a bit misplaced.

Sooo...my 6 and 4 year old have seen all the other movies courtesy of their father (I had no idea some of them are 12's). Is this one any worse/more violent/scary? The 6 year old is in a particularly gruesome phase and he loves that bit in 3 when anakin is in the burning lava and turns into darth Vader (I think - sorry I'm not a fan!).

DH and I went to the midnight showing, loved it. And plenty of women there too.

DH and a friend are taking our two 7 year olds tomorrow. I think mine will be fine because he's watched them all several times, although episode 3 only in the last few months. Not sure about the other boy, I think he's only seen one or two of the films and might therefore not be expecting the type of effects etc that you get in SW, iyswim. Very dependent on the child I think.

Saw it yesterday with two 7 year olds. DS loved it, but he was familiar with the story and has seen all of the other films. The other 7 year old fell asleep in it, but he had no clue about the back story and did not even know who Darth Vader was.

I loved it and really thought that the new and old characters were integrated really well. I am already hypothesising about the plots of 8 and 9 based on how 7 was set up. I did think that it echoed a bit much the plot of 4 - something new viewers would not know, but us oldies who are very familiar with the original would see very quickly.

Yes, there was violence, but it was cartoon violence, and not threatening (only two minor blood shots, and nothing which my squeamish DS could not handle.

I too was disappointed to see that 90% of the audience were men and boys and shocked that there were no young girls in the audience. FFS, the main protagonist is a kick-a** girl!

I think the issue for taking younger children is that it's completely overwhelming if you see it in 3D in terms of noise, action and violence (even if it is quite cartoonish). That's what made it fun to watch for an adult, but I did see quite a few little ones in the cinema who didn't look like they were having an amazing time.

I am most irritated with some friends on Facebook - one has put in a load of plot points - not all but enough to spoil the surprise a bit. I have no idea why anyone would think to do this.

Yes - I went for the 2D option with my 9 year old - he might have been fine with 3d, but was not willing to risk his enjoyment of the film on such a momentous occasion.

I totally, TOTALLY loved it!! I shrieked like a child a few times with sheer excitement and I wasn't the only one judging by the noise in the cinema.

Lots of teenage girls in the showing I went to, which was great! I have already booked tickets for Sunday Xmas Grin

DH, DS (7 nearly 8) & I are going tonight. The excitement in my household this morning was palpable! Especially since DD (4) is getting to stay over at grandmas with no brother GrinSmile
I saw the now deleted posts - hopefully it won't affect my enjoyment.
EnvyEnvy super jealous of pp who got to see it with the cast!

Just went. Our treat to ourselves on kids last day in school.

25 people in cinema. Everyone silent through entire film. No one left. No one spoilt it for the people waiting outside.

Perfect.

So much worth the wit. JJ Abramns was the perfect director choice. It just screamed of a film made by an uber fan.

Ds and I loved it. Though ds did peer at me at one point and whisper "are you crying Mum?!" I confess I was Grin

Was so good to see Han and Chewie back together and their banter. And loved the fact that the lead is such a strong, female character; there's a lot I want to say about that but won't. I loved every second and will go again next week.

Ok thanks to the PPs with the baby no-go heads up worth an ask, fingers crossed it'll still be showing still in a months time (!?!) - hopefully DD will have settled abit more by then so she can be left with DH/mum/any bugger by then! Grin

Sooo happy everyone's enjoying it though, if what jealous (especially of you nailsathome!! Envy what a once in a lifetime experience!) but just relieved it's not a Phantom flop Wink

Surprised the kids after school and saw movie at 4. It was a Ma zing. I was clapping and cheering with my kids just looking at me with embarrassed looks. I loved all the references to previous movies (but I would have loved a better 'bar' scene) . Special effects brilliant and well balanced. Han and chewie brilliant. Llllloved it.

Brilliant, I loved it. It was cheesy in parts but I enjoyed every minute. There was a muted cheer from the audience every time a familiar face appeared. And (here in Ireland) a less muted one for the Skelligs, which looked amazing.

Can't wait to see it again.

Really enjoyed it, very fast paced and great action, but disappointed that despite having lots of female characters and women on screen as extras or bit-parts - pilots, engineers, storm troopers -it only just passed the Bechdel Test IMO because of one conversation. And a tiny tiny interaction near the end but that's too short to pass the test.

Would also be interested to know what proportion of the dialogue was women, it seemed quite small relative to the men.

Agree that daisy R looks a lot like kiera knightly, and had some of her mannerisms too, and OTT posh accent, which was annoying, but overall she was good IMO.

I'm going to see it tomorrow morning with DH. For the first time EVER he has booked the tickets online, because, pretty much, it's the first film that he's really wanted to see that I'm not that fussed about. I don't think he trusted me to book the tickets, and didn't want to miss out! I'm only going with him because our just-turned-8 yo didn't fancy it much (he worried he'd get scared) and because DH came with me to the last 3 Harry Potter films, even though he's not a fan.
