Awesome!

I was not disappointed.

Now I won't post any spoilers, but I can't speak for anyone else on the thread, so proceed carefully. ...and there are a few plot points that probably won't stay secret for long, so get thee to a cinema!

Lots of old school star wars references and characters, lots of lovely new aliens to enjoy. Old cast great, new cast even better.

I was a little disappointed that of the hundreds of fans who turned out for the midnight showing, only a handful were women. Where were you all? The main character is a bad-ass lady, so there's no excuse that this is a boys film.

All in all, a few hours well spent. 10/10.
Before I say more, what did anyone else think?

We're booked to go Saturday night, I did think about going today (booked the day the tickets were released) but as DS2 who's the biggest fan in our household is off school poorly, I'm glad I went for Saturday!
Can't wait, we've been researching the others for the last couple of weeks and as far as DS2 is concerned, the big December countdown this year has nothing to do with Christmas, and everything to do with Star Wars in 3D!!

midnightmoomoo · 17/12/2015 20:20

Oh, and DS2 was most put out that I didn't book to take us to the first midnight showing! He's 7!!!

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 17/12/2015 20:21

Would it be worth going to see if you've never seen a singleStar Wars film before?

Baconyum · 17/12/2015 20:22

Hoping to see next week/this weekend depending if I can afford tickets and get tickets (middle of nowhere v small cinema). Glad MN have deleted spoiler crap! Some people!

Oh I also need to encourage dd to watch eps 4,5 and 6 first. Hoping it's not necessary to watch 1,2 and 3 to enjoy 7 as I just don't think I can endure that again!

NuclearFreeZone · 17/12/2015 20:27

That was brilliant, took a DD- 10 & DD-8 both have seen IV, V, VI but not the 'first 'lot. A few scary things but the worst bit was a trailer for a Di Capro film with a man being buried alive.Shock

I feel really privileged to take my girls to see this film given the age they are rather than a 40 something feeling nostalgic. I'm hoping to take DD again and some of her friends. Definitely a 'girls' film with a nod to the whole women in action films having to run in a weird way.

The Big Scream - I took one as a baby to see one of the prequal films and we all held our babies aloft to stare at scrolling In A Galaxy Far Far Away bit.Smile

The trailer for Batman & Spiderman, old school style had Wonderwoman in her swimming costume, flanked by blokes in body armour - ridiculous.

Noeuf swoon at Harrison Ford. I still would, too...

pieceofpurplesky · 17/12/2015 21:17

Another swoon at Harrison Ford, love love loved the movie.

MymbleClement · 17/12/2015 21:22

I bloody loved it. I cried at that bit. Can't wait to see it with the DSs.

WiIdfire · 17/12/2015 21:27

Simon - if you havent seen any of the others, it would still work as a stand-alone movie, so long as you know which of the main characters are related to each other, but it would be a shame to miss the opportunity to see them in order and enjoy the reveals as they happen. (Apparently watching them in the order 4, 5, 2, 3, 6 is good, with 1 as an extra to watch at the end. I'm trying it out, but it makes sense to use this order and treat movies 2&3 as a long 'flashback' in the middle.)

OP posts:
WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 17/12/2015 21:32

Why would you watch 1 at the end?? Hmm

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 17/12/2015 21:32

Sorry, didn't mean for a sarcastic face!

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 17/12/2015 21:33
Confused
TrionicLettuce · 17/12/2015 21:33

Well, DH and I are off out to see it again. Hoping we'll enjoy it even more second time round Grin

mizu · 17/12/2015 21:36

Got tickets for us to go next Tuesday, DH and DDs, I'm the real fan though, my dad took me to see The Empire Strikes Back when I was 6 and I've loved them since.

We may be watching the first trilogy at the weekend to prepare.

Harrison has still got it Grin I've seen the trailers!

MiscellaneousAssortment · 17/12/2015 21:52

Would you let a 5yr old watch the first ever Star Wars? I think this latest one isn't suitable but DS is desperate to join in the Star Wars craziness that is sweeping the nation (or more accurately, his class!)

TSSDNCOP · 17/12/2015 21:56

We are going Saturday night. I loved episodes IV, V and VI as a kid and DS had impressively sucked them up too.

LOVE LOVE the MN Logo!

Potterwolfie · 17/12/2015 21:59

Just got back, LOVED IT! Respectful of the originals but full of fantastic new characters and a brilliant story. Took DCs 12, 11 and 9, who all loved it, best film ever they reckon. Very intense action/shooting and some distressing scenes, so not suitable for younger children IMO.

In fact, had my eldest been 9, he wouldn't have been watching it, but my youngest did at same age...second child syndrome Confused!

SouthWestmom · 17/12/2015 22:14

I loved it, just enough of the old stuff but I have to say I wouldn't want to see it carried on.

WiIdfire · 17/12/2015 23:15

Simon - because 1 is extra backstory that isnt essential to the main plot, whereas 2-5 all tie up in a grand finale in 6. You could watch them 4,5,1,2,3,6 if you want. Actually you could watch them in any order you like, but if you just start at 1 and go through to 6, you dont get the surprise of the 'reveals' in 4 and 5, (and they're pretty cool) because it is all explained in 1-3 so its not a surprise anymore when you get to 5 making it less exciting. Thats all.

MintChocAddict · 17/12/2015 23:46

I loved it! It felt like an old SW movie and loved when the old characters started to appear. Was unsure about Rey at first as she seemed a bit Kiera Knightly but what a great female character. Thought Finn and Poe's characters were great too. Can't wait for the next instalment!

WiIdfire · 18/12/2015 00:02

She's not a 'bit' Keira Knightley, she's very Keira Knightley. Did anyone else think that one of the other actors (keeping it vague here) was very Benedict Cumberbatch too?

OP posts:
rosieposey · 18/12/2015 00:10

Just got in, loved it! Have to say I thought Daisy Ridley was an excellent actress but I was just saying on the way home to DH how much like Keira Knightly she is but prettier and a better actress.

jorahmormont · 18/12/2015 05:13

My work hours don't make it feasible to sit through it at the moment but I sent DP to the midnight showing as a Christmas present and he loved it! I'm going to see it as soon as I can, he has given me all the spoilers!

TingleBells · 18/12/2015 05:29

WOW! I saw it yesterday with DC's 8 and 5. Absolutely loved it. I think I was expecting to be disappointed but I really wasn't. Want to go and see it again but in 3D!

WiIdfire it didn't occur to me that she was like Keira Knightley at all but the other one really did remind me of Benedict Cumberbatch.
