no i haven't and don't want to either

NotQuiteCockney · 24/11/2006 10:09

I'm not sure about downloading shows being bad. I never watch any adverts on the telly anyway, I always record programs and skip adverts. Is that stealing, too?

Apparently downloading really helped Battlestar Galactica, for example. It came out in the UK first, everyone shared their copies. Quite a few Americans watched it before it came out there, they told their friends how good it was, and it got great viewer numbers in the US.

nutcracker · 24/11/2006 10:11

Oh sorry i forgot some of you are just plain perfect.

expatinscotland · 24/11/2006 10:11

'So cos you download films your a druggy or involved in other criminal activity ?? '

Yes, b/c downloading these films w/o paying from a site authorised to sell them is theft.

zippitippitoes · 24/11/2006 10:11

no we are just patient and law abiding and see the bigger picture where people get hurt by things

noddyholder · 24/11/2006 10:13

I don't want to go into too much detail on here in case someone knows me!I used to work in a restaurant and some thai guys use to bring those films in to sell to the chefs,It was videos in those days. We(the management and waitresses)never bought them but we were told quite openly what they were about and the kind of drugs etc that was involved with them. The other side is that it is murdering the arts

nutcracker · 24/11/2006 10:14

My brother does pay a subscription to the site he downloads them from.

My brother is not a druggy or invloved in any drug activity so sod off.

NomDePlume · 24/11/2006 10:16

'murdering the arts' ????

I have only ever seen big blockbuster movies on pirate for sale. I'm not convinced that the Hollywood studios are really going to go down the pan if people continue to buy pirated films.

Disagree with it on moral grounds. Disagree with it on legal grounds. But 'murdering the arts' holds very little water as far as I'm concerned.

noddyholder · 24/11/2006 10:18

Why do people feel they can download films and then sell them for profit when they have had no participation in the making of the film in any shape or form.Film is an industry like any other and actors directors etc all have the right to profit from their work which is at times long and arduous. Why should someone else profit?Your brother is breaking the law Now I will sod off

NotQuiteCockney · 24/11/2006 10:18

If we download music or a movie, and we actually like it, we end up buying it.

We've been downloading Studio 60, but will no doubt buy it when it comes out on DVD. And DH wants one of the albums I've downloaded on CD for Xmas.

expatinscotland · 24/11/2006 10:18

then it's not counterfeit, nutty. there are sites, like music sites, where you pay a fee and download legally.

there's a difference between that and going to a cinema, filming the movie then selling it.

zippitippitoes · 24/11/2006 10:19

there are some legal downloads but they are time delimited eg 0ne month and not for burning to your own..think lovefilm does it and they are expensive

NomDePlume · 24/11/2006 10:20

Nutty, expat wasn't implying that your brother is involved in drugs. Your post read "So cos you download films your a druggy or involved in other criminal activity ?? ". Movie piracy IS a criminal activity whichever way you look at it

nutcracker · 24/11/2006 10:22

I wish wether the films i watch were counterfit or not was all I had to worry about I really do.

zippitippitoes · 24/11/2006 10:24

that is a good reason to be concerned about people who suffer because of things like this trade and escalating criminal activity as it effects more and more ordinary people just like us

pooka · 24/11/2006 10:32

OK - what about this?
While I would never buy a counterfeit dvd, we rent dvds from lovefilm or amazon and then [whispers] copy them onto our media centre hard drive. We don't pass them on to anyone else. We just watch them.
Have built up an excellent film library of disney (gah) for dd without actually having to pay money to the evil corporation.
Am I morally bankrupt?

lucykate · 24/11/2006 10:41

i accept that it's against the law to copy cd/dvd's, i do also find it hard to sympathise with the fact that it takes profits away from the music and film industry. i mean, actor's in hollywood films are so poorly paid aren't they, only 15 million per film , they must have to search down the back of their sofas for a few coppers to buy food

zippitippitoes · 24/11/2006 10:46

also the number of films which make money is small ..lots of films are made on the back of those successful ones so the pot is squeezed heavily

noddyholder · 24/11/2006 10:47

My brother works in film and it is only a very few who make big money

lucykate · 24/11/2006 10:48

i'm aware of that, thats why i specifically said 'hollywood actors' in my post
