My ILs are very moral. They actually bought some in a car boot sale and did NOT realise they were counterfeit. They just thought they were getting a bargain.

They phoned DH and said, 'There's something wrong w/these DVDs, they're grainy and you can't hear well.'

Um, yes, b/c they're counterfeit!

They were shocked.

zippitippitoes · 24/11/2006 09:51

there is a copy of world trade centre here..it belongs to dd boyfriend parents..she asked if i wanted to see it and i said oh you mean the 193 one and she said no the world trade centre

NotQuiteCockney · 24/11/2006 09:52

I don't really buy the "pirate DVDs help fund drug dealers" thing. I mean, surely drug dealing is profitable enough to fund itself?

I can buy the terrorist thing, I guess, but don't actually believe it.

No, I don't buy pirate DVDs, because I don't like fake things, generally. Sometimes DH gets loaned some, but they're nearly always shakycam, so I can't be bothered.

Anyway, who would pay money for pirate DVDs when you can download decent versions using torrent software, for free!

noddyholder · 24/11/2006 09:53

It is definitely linked to organised crime. Please don't buy them

ShinyHappyStarOfBethlehem · 24/11/2006 09:53

Sigh.. you can take the girl out of the court room, name her after a fish, and chuck her into Mumsnet.. but you just can't take the court room out of the girl...

expatinscotland · 24/11/2006 09:54

'I can buy the terrorist thing, I guess, but don't actually believe it.'

Ever been to Turkey? Believe me, it does go to fund terrorist activities.

Kelly1978 · 24/11/2006 09:54

But if you make your own pirate dvds then you won't be funding serious crime, and it's not crap quality...

Iklboo · 24/11/2006 09:55

Parents BUY them, not counterfeit them themselves (but they're still being naughty)

zippitippitoes · 24/11/2006 09:55

here is something to read piracy is a crime

NotQuiteCockney · 24/11/2006 09:56

I live in a heavily Turkish area. Hmmm, are you talking about activities against the Turkish gov't? Or against us?

Oh, and don't get me started on "organised" crime. By definition pirate DVDs are part of organised crime, as selling them is criminal.

expatinscotland · 24/11/2006 09:58

No, I'm talking about how you go to Turkey and you can buy loads and loads of counterfeit goods and then when you try to get them back into the EU they're always trying to ferret out counterfeit stuff.

It's b/c it's used to fund terrorist activities.

Not so much DVDs, but clothes and handbacks.

Carmenere · 24/11/2006 09:58

I really offended someone on here a while ago by suggesting that selling counterfeit dvds was immoral and illegal. It could get mumsnet into trouble too and MN towers removed the post.

nutcracker · 24/11/2006 10:02

Not all of them are connected to crime.

My brother gets all the kids films for them, he downloads them him self and they are brilliant quality.

I really really don't care and tbh i don't think many people do. When ever it is mentioned in the playground at school there are always loads of people who go "oh yeah we've had that for ages too"

TheHighwayCod · 24/11/2006 10:02

I have a very nice friend who thinks it's acceptable to download films and tv programmes like Lost.
I think it's wrong.
I also wouldn't download music without paying for it.

If you don't pay the money to support the films and music you want to enjoy then eventually everything will end up as rubbish commercial girl bands/X Factor stuff.

And it's illegal.

expatinscotland · 24/11/2006 10:06

'I really really don't care and tbh i don't think many people do. '

That's sad, b/c the sale of these things really does go hand and hand w/organised crime. The people who sell drugs on estates and help fuel the crime and anti-social behaviour in some of these areas, for example.

zippitippitoes · 24/11/2006 10:07

by definition as nqc said and cod indeed counterfeit dvds or copies downloaded are always associated with crime

nutcracker · 24/11/2006 10:07

God some of you are so stuck up your own arses it's untrue.

So non of you have ever watched a copy of any film ???? Ever ??

nutcracker · 24/11/2006 10:08

My brother has nowt to do with drugs. So cos you download films your a druggy or involved in other criminal activity ??

expatinscotland · 24/11/2006 10:08

No, I never have.

Someone brought one over whilst I was out, and DH and he started to watch it, and it was so crap in quality they turned it off.

cupcakes · 24/11/2006 10:08

No. Someone gave dh a copy of Spiderman 2 and I made him get rid of it.

No need to say I am up own arse.
