I got an absolute bargain last week at a bring and buy sale. A still wrapped box set of Dvds of RH, To Catch A Thief and A Place In The Sun for £1!!
I havent seen RH before and am really enjoying it. I watched High Society this afternoon. I love the grace and style (excuse the pun!) of TCAT!! Smile

Matter of Life and Death. Black and white AND colour. Hankies ready.

Grace Kelly was NOT sublime in North by northwest because she was not in it!
I love lots that have already been mentioned but don't even know who Channing Tatum is!
My absolute favourite is Sullivan's Travels. I command you all to watch it!
All Bette Davis films, esp Mr Skeffington, Old Aquaintance and All About Eve.
The Fountainhead
The Rebel
To me, old films should really be before 1960 but I could maybe stretch to before 1970

Just remembered Laura

  • anything with Gene Tierney or Dana Andrews inc Night of the Demon
Oh and also All That Heaven Allows, Assyrian Fair (as I always thought it was caked), The Lost Weekend, The Women, His Girl Ftiday, all Busby Berkeley, all Fred and Ginger especially Top Hat. Could go on and on
cruikshank · 03/05/2015 00:15

Agree with loads of yours Davros, and especially Night of the Demon - no-one I know irl ever knows about it (although I have edumacated them thanks to the wonders of DVD nights) which is a shame because it is fucking wonderful.

And Fred and Ginger dancing to Cheek To Cheek is one of the top moments of all films ever made.

Davros · 03/05/2015 10:21

Have you got the dvd that also has Curse of the Demon? Sometimes we watch that for a bit of variety but prefer "Night". I remember watching it when I was about 13, in the dark round a mate's, and we were really scared. Especially when her dad creeped up and yelled"boo" through the hatch (1973!)

cruikshank · 03/05/2015 11:47

Yes, I have! It was for the American audience, wasn't it? I prefer the British one, but that's probably just because it was the one I saw first.

What do you think about them showing the demon? I always thought it kind of spoiled it, especially coming so early on, but I read a review a couple of years ago that convinced me otherwise. The basic gist of what the reviewer said was that by the audience knowing something that Andrews' character does not, it increases the dramatic tension. Without us seeing that, we wouldn't be shouting 'Now do you believe?' at the screen. I think there's some merit in that.

cruikshank I agree that we need to know that the demon is real and can see how Dana Andrews' character does not have an open mind. I love the bit with the Panther!

Stitchintime1 · 03/05/2015 20:05

I watched To Catch A Thief the other day and loved it.

Stitchintime1 · 03/05/2015 20:05

And Hitchcock films usually work for me.

cruikshank · 03/05/2015 21:55

Yes, the panther is good, also THE HAND in that same sequence in the house. The bit that really gives me goosebumps though is the ending - 'Sometimes it's better not to know' - his enquiring mind has finally stopped being enquiring.

Also, did you recognise Foggy (I think that's his name?) from Last of the summer wine as Rand Hobart, the patient he hypnotises?

ThatBloodyWoman · 04/05/2015 08:58

MrsDeVere yes,thats the one.
Its fascinately horrific in a surreal stiff upper lip way!

Davros · 04/05/2015 12:08

cruijshank, yes I had spotted Foggy or we know him as Mr Barraclough from Portidge

funnyoldonion · 05/05/2015 20:03
