I don't think The Vow counts as old Grin

Stratter5 · 26/04/2015 17:04

I can't believe I'm the only lover of Brigadoon Shock

Stratter5 · 26/04/2015 17:05

I don't think anything with Channing Tatum counts as old, unless he's an embryo in it, and even then that's pushing it. Grin

Seven Brides for Seven brothers

The Amazing Mr Blunden

The original trilogy of Star Wars
Some Like it Hot
Local Hero

Officer and a Gentleman is excellent. How I love Richard Gere, I would convert to Buddhism for him.

Certainly not.

Stratter5 · 26/04/2015 17:11

Yes! Have you guys seen Arbitrage? Swoon.

eeniemeeniemineymo · 26/04/2015 17:49

Lol, I am so sorry about listing the Channing Tatum film. I got totally carried away.

AngharadRedesmere · 26/04/2015 17:57

The French Connection- Brilliant film, Gene Hackman is fantastic. And, it was made more than a decade before I was born. So that is classed as an 'old' movie to me because it is over 40 years old.

Breakfast at Tiffany's- Audrey Hepburn and a gorgeous George Peppard.

I love Roman Holiday. Gregory Peck was gorgeous, even though he was old enough to be my grandfather.

Blossoms in the Dust- A weepy, based on true story about illegitimate children and their status, starring Greer Garson.

North By Northwest- Grace Kelly was sublime in it.

Two For the Road- Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney.

Went the Day Well

Carve Her Name With Pride- Virginia McKenna was fantastic in the role playing the ill-fated SOE operative, Violette Szabo.

The Nun's Story- Audrey Hepburn again.

The Inn of the Sixth Happiness- Ingrid Bergman was fantastic as Gladys Aylward.

Tron- A young Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner, yum, yum.

Indiana Jones and The Raiders of the Lost Ark- Harrison Ford, need I say more? And I love Karen Allen.

Starman- Karen Allen and Jeff Bridges. The film score alone is moving.

Peggy Sue Got Married- Love Kathleen Turner, the film score is another masterpiece. Nicholas Cage is a prick though.

The Original Star Wars trilogy- Brilliant. And, Harrison Ford is in the films.

The Last Starfighter- Good teen space opera film.

The Goonies- Every kid wanted these type of adventures.

That's enough for now, otherwise I'd be here all day.

Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House

and just about anything with Cary Grant.

MrsPresley · 26/04/2015 18:42

Angels with Dirty Faces

Yankee Doodle Dandy

In fact anything with James Cagney Smile

On the Town (Gene Kelly/Frank Sinatra)

Nutty Professor (Jerry Lewis)

Hillingdon · 26/04/2015 19:20

Mrs - did you see one of the last interviews Jimmy cagney did with Parkinson?

I love those honourary Oscars where someone is given it at clearly the end of their lives, Deborah Kerr, John Wayne. Makes me fill up!

Stratter5 · 26/04/2015 19:46

Oh, I'd forgotten The Inn of the Sixth Happiness, and The Nun's Story, wonderful films. Also The Battle of the Villa Fiorita, from the novel by Rumer Godden.

cruikshank · 27/04/2015 00:30

Love loads of these. Is Somewhere In Time the one with the picture and time travel? Not seen it in years.

Another one I haven't seen in years but been reminded by the Rumer Godden reference as I think she wrote the book - Black Narcissus. Loads of nuns going mad and fucking LIPSTICK. They don't do melodrama like that any more - see also The Red Shoes (which a pp mentioned) - similar sort of high-octane hysterics. Love them. Nobody just walks in those films. They flounce, emote and flop around all over the place. Ace.

FixItUpChappie · 27/04/2015 04:24

ooooh yes ^^ - the Red Shoes is marvellous!!

claraschu · 27/04/2015 05:44

I love Charlie Chaplin: Modern Times, The Circus, The Great Dictator

I also love ots that have been mentioned already

MmeMorrible · 27/04/2015 07:00

I caught the last 20 mins of The Greatest Show on Earth over the weekend, amazing circus movie. Which also reminded me of Trapeze starring Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis - haven't seen this in years but it's one of my favourites.

opalfire · 27/04/2015 08:32

How to Steal a Million. With gorgeous Audrey Hepburn and Peter O Toole.

liquidstatebacktowork · 27/04/2015 08:52

Most of these are already mentioned

Singing in the rain
high society
Ghost and Mrs Muir
Matter of Life or Death

I also love

Arsenic and Old lace - excellent Cary Grant Comedy with fantastic old ladies bumping men off.

And

Murphys War
Operation Petticoat
The Longest day

I prefer old films to new ones.

KatherineMumsnet · 29/04/2015 14:38
