I've just watched All About Eve and enjoyed it a lot. This thread has been great as I was just thinking I'd like to watch another old film but didn't know where to start.

CanIKondo · 25/04/2015 21:59

It's so hard to pick. I love Roman holiday - I was looking for it the other night when I was feeling blue.
Other favourites are High Society & The Philidelphia Story, the Third man and The Maltese Falcon. I always try to watch Its a wonderful life, Meet me in St Louis or We're no angels at Christmas.

Cocolepew · 25/04/2015 22:00

Any Doris Day, I adore her.
Some Like It Hot
Meet me in St Louis
Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin films, I had a terrible crush on Dean M when I was a child.
The Imitation of Life, it makes me sob every time I watch it.
The Wizard of Oz.
Abbott and Costello films.

Galaxymum · 25/04/2015 22:07

Father Goose with Cary Grant. I think it is an enchanting film and very funny. Leslie Caron and Cary Grant have great comic timing and the schoolgirls are cute.
Meet Me in St Louis. I adore this film and sing all the songs
Mandy - I haven't seen this on TV for years but it is lovely
Whistle Down the Wind " It's not Jesus, it's just a fella" a great British film
North by NorthWest - amazing thriller

Rivercam · 25/04/2015 22:17

Hayley Mills Disney films

Reach for the sky

Other WWII films

Beetlejuice isn't old - I watched it as a teen!

GrouchyKiwi · 25/04/2015 22:19

Oooh, oh yes, Hayley Mills. I love The Parent Trap and Pollyanna.

Rivercam · 25/04/2015 22:19

Mandy - about a deaf girl? Love that film.

Sister Kenny. - about a nurse curing a child paralysis disease

MmeMorrible · 25/04/2015 23:15

What about Penny Serenade with Irene Dunne and Cary Grant? It makes me bawl my eyes out every time, even though I know the story. It's the school play scene that does it.

stupidgreatgrinonmyface · 25/04/2015 23:29

I love loads of the films already mentioned, Shop Around The Corner is great I also love Random Harvest. A real tear jerker.
I don't understand why people won't watch black and white films - there are so many classics that they are missing out on!

LadyR77 · 25/04/2015 23:31

Breakfast at Tiffany's - I never get tired of watching it Smile

emotionsecho · 25/04/2015 23:35

Galaxy is Father Goose set during the American Civil War and centred on a group of people from a particular religious sect that "Thees and thous" a lot? If it is, I remember seeing it a long time ago and it was very funnyGrin.

emotionsecho · 25/04/2015 23:38

Actually it's not set during the American Civil War but it does feature, there is a scene with some soldiers and Charlie the Goose?

shadowfax07 · 25/04/2015 23:38

Passport to Pimlico
Invasion Quartet

MissMarpling · 25/04/2015 23:42

Vertigo, 39 steps (version 1), Kind Hearts and Coronets, Ladykillers.

Jessiegirl · 25/04/2015 23:54

Twelve Angry Men, great jury room film.
Bringing Up Baby, Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant with a leopard (I think). Fabulous 'screwball' comedy.

BitOfFun · 25/04/2015 23:56

There are just too many to choose from, I'll have to give you a list. My criteria is films I can watch an unlimited number of times.

It's A Wonderful Life
Singin' In The Rain
Some Like It Hot
That Touch Of Mink
Young At Heart
Calamity Jane
Brief Encounter
The African Queen
High Society
Blithe Spirit
Rebecca
North By Northwest
The Woman In The Window

FoolishFay · 26/04/2015 01:14

A Matter of Life and Death - David Niven (I bet you're pretty, June); Harvey - James Stewart; whistle down the wind - Alan bates (come on, Blakey, lad); Mrs Miniver - Greer Garson; brief encounter and Goodbye Mr Chips (I had thousands of children, all of them boys). Sob.

emotionsecho · 26/04/2015 01:32

Yes to 12 Angry Men, and Rebecca, also The Birds, Vertigo and Dial M for Murder.

Chinatown is one of my all time favourite films but not sure it's 'old' enough for this thread.

cruikshank · 26/04/2015 02:04

stupidgreatgrin, oh, I love Random Harvest. I used to have it on video years ago but my idiot sister taped over it. Must get the DVD.

Love The Wizard Of Oz and think it can wire your brain properly if you watch it at the right age.

Love Vertigo as well although it's actually a very dark film - Stewart is billed as this ordinary guy, and everything that he does is accepted on the surface, but he's stalky as fuck. There's one line, where he takes Judy into the hairdresser, and the woman there says "Don't worry sir, we know exactly what you want". She's outside the story, so she can see how fucking creepy the whole thing is - Hitchcock and Stewart make a woman into an ideal and then destroy her. Twisted as all get-out but I do love it, and the music is absolutely gorgeous.

MmeHorrible I love Waterloo Bridge as well - it's just impossibly romantic - tragic ballerina, doomed love, the fates of war - fucking brilliant. And Vivien Leigh just looks so luminous.

Tummyrumbled · 26/04/2015 02:20

An Affair to Remember - it is already a remake of Love Affair (1939 with Irene Dunn)

Streetcar Named Desire

Imitation of Life- cried bucketloads

Gone with the Wind

Gigi
