I got an absolute bargain last week at a bring and buy sale. A still wrapped box set of Dvds of RH, To Catch A Thief and A Place In The Sun for £1!!
I havent seen RH before and am really enjoying it. I watched High Society this afternoon. I love the grace and style (excuse the pun!) of TCAT!! Smile

Yasojiro Ozu's Tokyo Story

Lagoonablue · 26/04/2015 06:58

Yes to most of above. I love Gregory Peck, he was so handsome. Love James Stewart films too. Great actors.

Was just talking to DH about how when we were kids we would watch all these old b and w films on TV and now they are hardly ever on. It's a shame.

Night of the Hunter is a brilliant film, as is Double Idemnity, the Sam Spade films. I love musicals too. On The Town in particular. On the Waterfront is a great film.

Mildred Pierce is fantastic too. Hasn't been on TV for years.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 26/04/2015 07:01

I love a classic film. Some favourites are:
All About Eve
Gentleman Prefer Blondes
Calamity Jane
The Thief of Bagdad
The Adventures of Robin Hood
Brief Encounter
Victim
The Court Jester
El Cid
The Vikings
The Great Race

NinjaLeprechaun · 26/04/2015 07:03

The Philadelphia Story - the onscreen chemistry between Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart is so fantastic that you secretly hope that they'll dump the girls and wind up together.

Singin' In the Rain. The Court Jester. Arsenic and Old Lace. The African Queen. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Just to name a few.

MetallicBeige · 26/04/2015 07:04

To Kill a Mockingbird - "Miss Jean-Louise stand up, your father's passing".

Gone With The Wind
Brief Encounter
Ice Cold In Alex

In that order.

How could I forget 'To Kill a Mockingbird', wonderful film.

Didn't know that about Marni Nixon singing for Natalie Wood in West Side Story, still my favourite musical though. My parents had the soundtrack LP for a musical called 'Kismet' I loved the music as a child but have never heard of it since.

Someone mentioned the film 'Shane', I absolutely totally and utterly can't stand that film, it is grounds for divorce proceedings in this house if dh watches itGrin.

TheIronGnome · 26/04/2015 13:10

Bringing up baby, hilarious film!

RabidFairy · 26/04/2015 13:22

I adore 'old' films, lots that have been mentioned.

I love Bette Davies films (don't think The Old Maid has been mentioned).
Love Margaret Rutherford films, especially Murder at the Gallop and Murder at the Vicarage.
Gone with the Wind.
Laurel and Hardy and Abbott and Costello films.
Love a lot of the Hammer House films, especially those with Peter Cushing.
Frankenstein
Carry on Screaming
Carry on Cleo
Carry on up the Kyber
The Doctor films (Doctor at Large etc)
So many I love.....

Stratter5 · 26/04/2015 14:59

Oh yes, the Carry On and Doctor films are ace, and the original James Herriot film.

FoolishFay is that the one where DN goes up to heaven on an escalator? Love that film.

Mrs Miniver is another favourite, plus the old Disney films. Also love The Trouble With Angels; Bell, Book and Candle, and the St Trinian films. I have very fond memories of Saturday afternoons with XMIL, we used to watch old films together, drink tea, and eat homemade cake. A very gentle way to spend an afternoon, and the DDs loved it.

eeniemeeniemineymo · 26/04/2015 16:12

Any James Dean
Any Doris Day (but especially That Touch of Mink)
Singing in the Rain
Gone With the Wind
Another vote for Meet Me In St Louis
Two Weeks With Love (little known fact that Dirty Dancing was a remake of this film)
Yanks
D Day Sixth of June
Dambusters
The Longest Day (I have a huge crush on Richard Todd)
West Side Story, by the way, Natalie Wood did not sing "I Feel Pretty"
The Great Escape
Monsters Inc
The Goonies
Star Wars (not the "new" ones but the original trilogy)
Silent Running
Logans Run
Somewhere in Time (does anyone else remember this film btw)
Carry on films
Cocktail
Top Gun
No Way Out (Kevin Costner's best film)

That is just for starters.....

eeniemeeniemineymo · 26/04/2015 16:15

Officer and a Gentleman
This Happy Breed
Blues Brothers
Animal House
Yours Mine and Ours
Anything with Channing Tatum but particularly The Vow as he is laying on a bed naked stroking a cat. I nearly fell off the sofa...

Stratter5 · 26/04/2015 16:54

I vaguely remember Somewhere in Time, Jane Seymour was in it?

Funny how our perception of 'old' changes, to me old is anything pre 80's.

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 26/04/2015 16:56

I love Somewhere in Time.

I recently saw The Conversation with Gene Hackman. What a masterpiece.
