Have loved being reminded of so many golden oldies..
How can you see a film loads of times and still be entertained?
One of my favourite scenes is the closing one in Some Like it Hot - "No-one's Perfect"...still makes me guffaw.
Total schmaltz but always gets me - in Sleepless in Seattle when Meg Ryan fails to find Tom Hanks and son at top of Empire State Building but then they come back up for the lost teddy - "It's You"...
PP mentioned Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas in Meet Me in St Louis...not bothered about the film but that song has me sobbing silently whenever it's played in the run-up to Christmas
Another scene guaranteed to bring a tear to the eye of the stoniest-hearted...in Casablanca when the Victor Laszlo character drowns out the Nazis with a passionate rendition of the Marseillaise...

A lot of mine have already been mentioned already

Mama Mia - when they are getting ready for the wedding and sing Slipping through my fingers - makes me well up every time.

Love Actually - yep, I cry at that Emma Thompson scene - it's just so well acted. Most of Love Actually really - one of my favourite films.

cozietoesie · 29/03/2015 23:56

Bad Day at Black Rock - when Spencer Tracy retaliates after Ernest Borgnine attempts to intimidate him in the cafe;

Independence Day - when the father starts going on about Area 51 and the 'Suit' (Secretary of Defence?) starts looking guiltily at the floor and then finally admits to it ('Actually, Mr President, that's not entirely accurate...'

Kill Bill 1 - when Uma Thurman calls out O-ren from her private room

All About Eve - the very late scene when Eve is unmasked by Addison de Witt. ('Eve Darling - this is Addison!)

And I have to mention - the funeral scene in Charade! I've recently watched that in fact.

ZingEasteryName · 30/03/2015 00:25

ah the end of Overboard "Arturo!" "Katarina!"

Icimoi · 30/03/2015 00:36

Title song scene in Singing in the Rain. Just perfect.
"Call that a knife" scene in Crocodile Dundee.
The bit at the end of The Sting when you realise Paul Newman and Robert Redford aren't dead.
The end of Groundhog Day, when it's finally the next day.

Itsgettingworse · 30/03/2015 00:43

The little mermaid Blush

Just the scene where Eric is sailing off to get married and she's breaking her heart on the pier Sad all these years later and it still makes me want to cry

True Lies - tango

SergeantJarhead · 30/03/2015 02:11

Aladdin has and always will be my favourite film and I always had to avoid watching the very end ...
Aladdin: Genie, I wish for your freedom.
Genie: One bona fide prince pedigree coming up. I... What?
Aladdin: [holds the lamp up to Genie] Genie, you're free!

Then the Genie getting all excited about his vacation :D
Made me cry then, makes me cry now x

Dr Zhivago - when Lara leaves Varykino and Yuri says goodbye and gives her his balalaika then as she departs he runs through the house and up to the attic for one last glimpse of her. He can't get the window open and claws at the frost. Then he smashes it and the look on his face as she disappears over the horizon and he never sees her again.

accompanied by Lara's theme
sob takes out tissue.

JamNan · 30/03/2015 07:36

Minny's Chocolate Pie in The Help.

teejayem · 30/03/2015 08:38

Empire of the sun - the bit where a very young Christian Bale is up a concentration camp watch tower during a raid by the American Air Force. The whole thing is done in slow motion, John Williams soundtrack, and the P51 Mustang cruises past him at head height, pilot drops the canopy and waves at him while he's screaming 'P51! Cadillac of the sky!' It's just beautiful, even describing it makes me well up! I love that aircraft.

rosabud · 30/03/2015 08:44

Toy Story 3 when Andy's Mom walks into Andy's room and it's all packed up for college. It's the sharp intake of breath and the camera angle - it's so bare. One of the few times I've actually cried in a cinema.

Also an oldie - A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, so many scenes in that film, but when the mother lowers herself to enter the bar to look for her husband and the bar tender treats her with such respect and dignity and feeling....it's very humbling.

GerundTheBehemoth · 30/03/2015 08:51

The bit in Orlando where Tilda Swinton is at a very uptight garden party, being quizzed about how she's not a man any more - then she angrily turns down a much older nobleman's proposal, rushes off through a maze (her outfit changing halfway through as there's been (yet another) time jump). Then as the music swells and soars, she comes out of the maze onto the open moor, falls over her ridiculous dress and mutters: 'Nature, nature, I am your bride! Take me!'. Then Billy Zane shows up on a horse, which rears up in alarm, throws him off, and he lands on the ground in front of her, and it's basically love at first sight Grin Here is .

Middleoftheroad · 30/03/2015 08:56

Broadcast News..Albert Brooks' character is laughing in the school bullies'faces as they beat him up. He says something along the lines of "you'll never earn more than ten bucks an hour!"

The 'Wise Up' scene in Magnolia. Amazing.

BaconAndAvocado · 30/03/2015 11:50

The Way we Were with Barbara Streisand and Robert Redford.

ADORE the whole film but one of the many standout scenes is when Babs and Robert are coming to terms with why they didn't work out.

Robert: I always thought you were beautiful.

BAbs: But I'm not the right kind of beautiful, am I?

Basically Robert wants a Stepford dolly bird type for a wife and Babs is too much of a loose cannon for him with her strong convictions and dangerous political views!

And the music............

BaconAndAvocado · 30/03/2015 11:50

It's a Wonderful Life.......the whole bloody film makes me cry, even the happy bits!

WheresMeBrew · 30/03/2015 13:42

The scene in Love Actually where Emma Thompson discovers her husband is having an affair as they exchange Christmas gifts. She's takes herself off to her bedroom, sticks a bit of Joni on, and crumples for all of thirty seconds. Then she takes a deep breath, smooths out her clothes, and goes back to tend to the children like nothing has happened. So bloody powerful. Sums up motherhood in a heartbeat.

ChristyMooreRocks · 30/03/2015 14:01

Yy to the Emma Thompson scene in love Actually.

It's a cliche but I love the last scene of Dorty Dancing!

The dance off scene in American Pie:The Wedding.

The opening 'Circle of life' sequence of the Lion King has me bawling every time, I just can't help it, I love it!

The scene in Up where he finds their 'adventure book' and sees that she has put their lives together in it.

The last scene of Inception where he gets off the plane.

Last scene of the Da Vinci Code where he realised where the Holy Grail is and runs round the streets of Paris.

Last scene of Gladiator.

I am sucker for a Hans Zimmer score!

stoopstoconker · 30/03/2015 14:01

final scene in Billy Elliot where he leaps on stage in swan costume & final scenes in Strictly Ballroom where he leaps and slowmo slides across the dancefloor.

seems to be a bit of a theme there...

JamNan · 30/03/2015 14:53

For all those saying Love Actually here's the Emma thompson clip

A very powerful bit of acting.

Nothavingfunrightnow · 30/03/2015 14:56

Bridges of Madison County - where Meryl Streep is in the pick up truck with her husband and Clint Eastwood is waiting in the rain for her, willing her to open the door and go to him.

FiveExclamations · 30/03/2015 15:21

Off the top of my head:

The bit in Russel Crowe's Robin Hood where Little John bellows across the party to the girl doing the slightly suggestive wiggle in his direction "I'M GONNA MAKE YOU SMILE!"

The arrival of the Metatron in Dogma.

Danny and the Camberwell carrot scene in Withnail and I "I don't advise a haircut, man. All hairdressers are in the employment of the government. Hairs are your aerials. They pick up signals from the cosmos, and transmit them directly into the brain."

In Paul when Paul is arguing with Ruth from the toilet and then reveals himself.

Pretty much every scene in Local Hero but [Spoiler] especially when the phone rings in the end.

"I hold up buses!" from Restless Natives.

John Wayne framed in the door in The Searchers.
