I know it's been out for AGGGGGGGESS but I watched P.S. I Love You the other night with the luscious Gerard Butler in it...I lost my husband in 2013 and it just made me go all slushy inside...beautiful film.

OMG not one of you has mentioned BRIGHTSTAR .It's just the most beautiful and heartrending modern film ever. It made me cry right through it. It's directed by Jane Campion who also directed The Piano.

It's about the life of Keats the poet and his life in Hampstead.

I do love a good weepie, the best musical and best weepie from the early 60s is West Side Story

tumbletumble · 12/03/2015 13:09

Remains of the Day

I went to see it with my boyfriend years ago and cried for the rest of the evening. He was a bit bemused! Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson are brilliant in it.

ppeatfruit · 12/03/2015 13:36

Yes I liked that too tumble but it's not BrightStar Grin It went on a bit IMO Grin

ShebaRabbit · 12/03/2015 13:44

Coming Home, Jane Fonda and Jon Voight, a 70's flick about a woman who falls in love with a wheel-chair using Vietnam vet, while she's married to somebody else, real weepy, great film. Also Midnight Cowboy Sad

Brokeback Mountain stunned me to tears. I couldn't decide who's acting was better, HL, JG or MW. She is a very underrated actress IMO.

Terms of Endearment. Every.Time.

bruffin · 12/03/2015 14:15

I know my name is Steven.

Haydayrookie

Do you know the after story to this film

Steven Stayner

The film goes up to where he died tragically young, but his brother went on to be a serial killer and the other little boy he rescued died young as well. It is a very sad story

cornusalba · 12/03/2015 21:53

Apple-juice has mentioned one of my favourites, An Imitation of Life, the funeral scene is merciless. You Can Count On Me is a beautiful and sad film

ShatnersBassoon · 12/03/2015 22:05

I've seen most of these and the only one that made me cry, and it was uncontrollable whole body noisy sobs, was Schindler's List. I really shouldn't have gone to see it at the cinema. I lurched out of there, held up by my friend who was completely unmoved Confused.

Soppy shit doesn't do it for me.

LeChatRouge · 12/03/2015 22:16

Captain Phillips for me.

Just the last five mins, I found the scene so emotional and moving.

Summer of 42. Based on a true story: Young boy coming of age in USA in the war has attraction to beautiful newly wed who is married to a soldier then widowed shortly after . It won masses of awards and the music by Michel le Grand (famous composer). did too. Staggered Gary Grimes never did anything after that, he won an Emmy i think. Its the most beautiful, poignant, stunning evocation of teenage first love and loss. Just the music makes me tearful even 20yrs on from first seeing it. Directed by guy who did To Kill a Mockingbird.

.and ..' Mockingbird Don't Sing'. True story about a girl tied to a chair in her room til she was 13 and abused by her father. Rescued , but used as a 'project' by scientists who fostered her, taught her to speak & some basic skills, then dropped her like a brick when project funding was withdrawn. Shuffled from abusive foster home to foster home and now 50 and somewhere in LA in home for challenged adults: traumatised and now mute again. So, so sad. I felt so angry and that some compensation £ should be found for her to live with nice people in a family atmosphere like the one she initially thrived in after rescue.

vladthedisorganised · 13/03/2015 13:45

YYY to Schindler's List, Life Is Beautiful, Midnight Cowboy, ET and Dead Poet's Society (remember sobbing at that during teenage sleepovers)

Whale Rider. Even DH 'had something in his eye'.

maudpringles · 13/03/2015 13:49

Bridge to Terabithia.
It's a children's film with an absolute knock out twist.
I was in the cinema with dd's sobbing silently in the darkness Sad

blackheartsgirl · 14/03/2015 17:10

Don't laugh but I cried my socks off at Santa Paws Blush
The little girl in it looks a bit like my dd3.

Jacana · 14/03/2015 17:35

sazzle thank you for the wiki link to 'genie', one of our uni case studies into language acquisition, I'd no idea of the whole story of that poor girlSad

My very first bawling like a babe film was Bambi. My friend and I took our kids to a Sunday morning showing at a local little cinema, so just Katie, me, and a hundred or so little children dropped off by their parents. Katie and I sobbed. Our children comforted us.Blush

Minus2seventy3 · 14/03/2015 19:40

First ten minutes of Up... First time I saw it was on blu-ray, little one (then four) was sat on my knee, and as I was holding her, I was just hoping she wasn't gonna turn round to see her old man and blubbing mess.

Sazzle41 · 14/03/2015 22:30

Hi Jacana, so glad you liked the link to Mockingbird Don't Sing. . Yes Genie's situation, real name Susan i think, is beyond sad. I feel so strongly she is due some compensation for being used like that then dropped by the scientist who studied her, fostered her then dropped her when funding was withdrawn. Shameful.

I did wonder about starting a fund for her via that website whats it called? But how would she get the £ /her brother would probably not want her moved from sound of it and he is only family member left. She's just been dumped/left to rot in all honesty.
