Ooo, Eau Rouge, I like your choices! The Usual Suspects is MAGNIFICENT.

I wholeheartedly agree with whoever it was that had Goodbye Lenin on their list, too - love that film.

WithACherryOnTop · 23/08/2012 16:47

'what was your list like before you narrowed it down?'

Blush Sorry.I can't resist a film thread. I wasn't trying to hijack it.I promise.Blush

coffeeandwine · 23/08/2012 16:49

Anything with Cary Grant in it
It's a Wonderful Life.
The Usual Supects.
Most of the Coen brothers films.
Casablanca.
Legally Blonde.
Dirty Dancing.

squoosh · 23/08/2012 16:49

My favourite sick-on-the-couch or guilty pleasure film is the 1980's version of Anne of Green Gables.

squoosh · 23/08/2012 16:50

Oh and I love The 39 Steps an The Lady Vanishes. .

Oh, and Goodbye Mr Chips. That's a good one for a blub.

Waspie · 23/08/2012 16:50

My favourite film is Vertigo because it is completely brilliant Grin My other favourites are:

The usual Suspects
Die Hard
Breakfast at Tiffanys
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Some like it Hot
The Third Man
Blade Runner
Rear Window
The Lady Killers (original not crappy Tom Hanks version)
Terminator

coffeeandwine · 23/08/2012 16:51

Sigh. It's been a long day. My nose really isn't that big, but has probably lost its impact now. Blush

milewalker · 23/08/2012 16:52

3 films i could watch all day everyday forever are
1, practical magic
2, whatever happened to baby jane
3, the great escape (this was the film i saw when i was little and when i found out it was based on real events it started my very long interest in ww2)

Pitmountainpony · 23/08/2012 16:54

Saw drive for the second time yesterday.
Great film.

WithACherryOnTop · 23/08/2012 16:54

Shane definitely died. I'm not sure about Jean Arthur though. He definitely wanted to,but would he?

squoosh · 23/08/2012 16:56

Yep, teeny, tiny Shane was slumped over the horse as the little boy bleated 'Come back Shane'. . . . .

Alan Ladd was approx 7 inches high.

Waspie · 23/08/2012 16:56

oh and in the category of best adaptation of a book I really enjoyed (still subjective of course):

To Kill a Mockingbird
LA Confidential
Our Man in Havana
A Passage to India

And talking of David Lean.... Gandhi and Bridge on the River Kwai

I'll shut up now...maybe Smile

tethersend · 23/08/2012 16:57

Yy to Goodbye Lenin

littletingoddess · 23/08/2012 16:58

American Beauty, followed closely by Vertigo.

EauRouge · 23/08/2012 17:00

Ah bugger it, I should have just made up a load of film titles and then replied 'what, you've never even heard of them? Philistines!'. That would have made me look really cool.

WhitegoldWielder · 23/08/2012 17:00

Depends on the mood I'm in and what sort of film I fancy but for now if you gave me
The Usual Suspects
No Way Out
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
The Princess Bride
Singing in the Rain
Crash ( Matt Dillon one)
There's Something about Mary

And finally
Some like it Hot

That will see me thru a few days!

missymoomoomee · 23/08/2012 17:00

I think best adaptation of a book is A Clockwork Orange, really disturbing, but very thought provoking and was way ahead of its time.

WhitegoldWielder · 23/08/2012 17:01

Oo and Charade

Blade Runner

And even Avatar will do too

ifherbumwereabungalow · 23/08/2012 17:01

So pleased to see lots of people loving The Princess Bride. I would also suggest the original version of The Women, it's one I can watch over and over again and enjoy it more every time.

Gunznroses · 23/08/2012 17:02

Scent of a woman
A bronx tale
Legends of the fall
Troy
The Terminator (the first one)
Last of the Mohicans
Not easily broken
Roots
Single white female
Catalina
Annie - the original version
Shaw shank redemption
Titanic

WithACherryOnTop · 23/08/2012 17:03

I have to add another two.

Reservoir Dogs

The Legend of 1900

WineGoggles · 23/08/2012 17:03

Hot Fuzz (comedy about a village police force)

Plunkett and Macleane (a quirky period action film)

Coraline (creepy animation)

Miss Congeniality (Sandra Bullock as FBI agent undercover in a beauty pagent)

Smokin' Aces (mob boss/hit men/action)

Grow Your Own (about life on an allotment. Funny and moving film)

Ghost Ship (horror about salvagers on an abandoned ocean liner)

Atonement (beautifully made but not particularly feel good)

No Country for Old Men (gripping thriller)

WhitegoldWielder · 23/08/2012 17:04

Can I also add The Searchers
And The Ladykillers ( original)

BellaOfTheBalls · 23/08/2012 17:06

hugandroll yes adulthood also excellent. We quite enjoyed 4321 as well, but we are rather in the minority there I think. Controversial I know but I feel NC's writing/directing is far better than his acting a view I would probably more vocal of if he wasn't so attractive Wink

kellyelly yes probably not the best while pissed. Too much like concentration!

Also love Baz Lurrhmann films, although Austrailia was a little too self indulgent for my liking. Ooh and Danny Boyle too.

lurkingaround · 23/08/2012 17:07

Shawshank redemption, excellent. One of my all time favorites.
Usual Suspects excellent too.

Breaking The Waves, is another of mine, anyone else?

Love watching The Wizard of Oz with the kids.
