I always think, oh I really want to buy/watch that film and then I forget what it was. Need som good suggestions to update my dvd collection Grin

Elf is good for a chuckle on a miserable Sunday afternoon.

akaemmafrost · 23/08/2012 15:52

Loads but the one I always think of when this question is asked is Thelma and Louise. Love that film.

SmellyFartado · 23/08/2012 15:54

Jeez, feels kind of hot in here Grin

Am with most of the posts on this thread in that film is entirely a personal choice - what's really meaningful to one person can be complete shite to another. Doesn't mean that anyone should be bashed for having an opinion though.

And FWIW, my top films would be Gone with the Wind, Citizen Kane, Pans Labryinth, The Shawshank Redemption, Heat, the Bourne trilogy, Gladiator, Spartacus, Wizard of Oz and Dirty Dancing

tethersend · 23/08/2012 15:55

Ooh, forgot Airplane!

Donnie Darko a load of old shite, IMO.

KellyElly · 23/08/2012 15:56

akaemmafrost Love Thelma and Louise! Love Brad Pitt in it Wink

OP posts:
squoosh · 23/08/2012 15:58

'Ah lahk your wife'

That's my Brad Pitt in Thelma and Louise impression.

pumpkinsweetie · 23/08/2012 15:58

Smelly: i thought Pans Labyrinth was really good too and The Orphanage-i really like El da Toro films they are brill

slowestwildebeast · 23/08/2012 15:58

Airplane is great. 'surely you can't be serious?' 'yes I am. And don't call me Shirley!'

Chopper is great.

slowestwildebeast · 23/08/2012 16:00

We need to get this woman to a hodpital.
'what is it?'
It's a place where sick people go to get better, but that's not important now.

sugarice · 23/08/2012 16:01

I am rubbish with scary films, I've never watched the classic horrors and Alien nearly had me behind the sofa well my hands Grin god knows what the Exorcist would reduce me to!

missymoomoomee · 23/08/2012 16:02

Has anyone seen the remarkably cheesy film 'Hobo With a Shotgun' I watched it for the title alone, and although it was clearly trying to be a horror type film it really was a comedy.

SmellyFartado · 23/08/2012 16:03

Thanks pumpkin - haven't got the guts to watch the Orphanage yet but I will one day

BellaOfTheBalls · 23/08/2012 16:05

kellyelly I love Donnie Darko. But its quite dark. I know one friend who just didn't "get" it when I was sitting completely enraptured.

Kidulthood is pretty good too. Quite keen on Noel Clarke's stuff, although you need to be in the mood; can be gritty and heavy in the language.

hugandroll · 23/08/2012 16:06

I genuinely don't have a favourite as it depends on my mood but watched we need to talk about Kevin the other day, you need to pay attention but thought it was very well done and acted.

hugandroll · 23/08/2012 16:06

bella I agree with kidulthood and also adulthood.

limitedperiodonly · 23/08/2012 16:07

The films I watch the most, which I suppose would be my favourites, are:

Trading Places
Pretty Woman
Roxanne
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
A Fish Called Wanda
The Man With Two Brains
Splash
Starman (sob)
No Way Out
The French Connection
Layercake
LA Confidential
A Knight's Tale
Beverly Hills Cop
Back To The Future
Godfather Part II
Aliens
The Great Escape
The Magnificent Seven (not the Japanese original)

There are others but I think we all can all see my taste is mostly '80s comedies and appallingly low-brow. Sorry Leslie

WithACherryOnTop · 23/08/2012 16:07

So bloody what if people like films that you don't approve of Leslie. No one asked for your opinion on others' viewing choices.
People like you infuriate me.You actually turn people away from trying new genres of film with an attitude like that. your patronising attitude And the OP asked what our favourite films are,not what we think are the greatest films ever made.

I count myself as a film lover, although perhaps by your 'standards' I'm not,but I have some 'fluff' on my list too,and I'm not ashamed of it.

And where's your list of favourite films for us to criticise?

KellyElly · 23/08/2012 16:08

BellaOfTheBalls I Donnie Darko years ago but I watched it after a bit of a heavy night and I think its one of those films best not to tackle after a few drinks Grin

OP posts:
KellyElly · 23/08/2012 16:09
  • I 'watched'
OP posts:
waterlego6064 · 23/08/2012 16:10

Oooh yes, Donnie Darko is good for a bit of brain-ache.

I'm another one who loves Elf. Hilarious.

JeezyPeeps · 23/08/2012 16:11

The sad thing is, Leslie is being so critical - but refuses to answer thd ops question which she asked because she wanted ideas to expand her DVD collection. Leslie thinks that we won't have heard of her choices, so would be ideally placed to help the op.

DeterminedandSpecialMum · 23/08/2012 16:12

My favourite is Beaches.

Also love

300
The Other Boleyn Girl
50 First Dates

tethersend · 23/08/2012 16:16

Slowestwildebeast- I even called DD2 Shirley just so I can say that line Grin

(But for god's sake don't tell her that)

spiderlight · 23/08/2012 16:17

High Fidelity - John Cusack and loads of really good music. Not very highbrow but I don't care!
In the Wild - fascinating, beautiful film, and again some excellent music.

tethersend · 23/08/2012 16:18

Oh, and one for Leslie- La Jetee.
