My son's graduation was in that cathedral. They had an organist while they got things going, and she played Toccata and Fugue as her first piece. The entire congregation jumped out of their skins, it was fantastic.

I wish I’d realised that was there when I visited Liverpool.

It was such a highlight - an enormous pipe organ being played by a proper musician for us for about 45 minutes. I had shivers.

(Officially, OBVIOUSLY the best bit was the 26 seconds of DS2 walking across the stage to receive his degree. Obviously. But it was really the organ music)

ETA: I'm really invested in this adventure. It reminds me of my visit to the Rosslyn Chapel and all the symbolism in the architecture there, although I was never into the conspiracy theories, following the Da Vinci Code.

A dragon as a means of using up unlabelled chutney is also excellent.

As a lover of a great variety of chutneys I am wondering quite how dragony it is and whether I could just try a teensy bit on a little cracker.

It's only recently via the Gosie episodes that I've realised how big you are, Errol - not quite fitting into rooms where everybody is gathered must be difficult at times But it obviously has its compensations, like taking several gerbils for joyrides on your back

I always assumed that the Anglican cathedral was ancient, and the Catholic one was a recent upstart - in fact they were both built in the 20th century.
Every day a school day in the Bluestocking, it's only 10.40 and I've increased my knowledge of the cathedrals of Liverpool pretty much a hundredfold already!

Some of the ones in the Catholic cathedral are v interesting too, like the 'lantern' but I haven't looked at them in detail yet.

I was reading about the women depicted in Liverpool Cathedral. I love Catherine Gladstone's entry on the wiki list.

Bore da! Liverpool is one of those on my list of places to visit, along with Norwich and Durham, as I would like to see the cathedrals someday. Ridiculous that I haven't been yet! (but, then, I visited Ireland only for the first time a few years ago, and you can practically see it from my house)

Currently "planning" a trip to Tokyo instead.

Morning all, and Happy National Beach Day. I will be celebrating this significant event by staying at home and doing laundry, since the younger Magpie came back from camp yesterday. I might occasionally stray over to the current thread about beautiful men, too. Although to be honest a good 50% of them are getting either "who?" or "NO!" reactions 😆 My vote goes to Harrison Ford, and has done for a very long time.

That thread's been a lot of fun (and, although he's not my fav, I think the original OP pic of Paul Newman might have taken the biscuit over all the others, 600+ posts later notwithstanding).

Don't forget to contribute to the Other Thread, as I think the women need their recognition as well 😉

Some of the younger ones are bland as all get out.

Paul Newman was more beautiful than Harrison Ford but Harrison was still my crush from age 11 onwards.

Richard Armitage being gay broke my heart for about 2 years, until I finally accepted he wasn't going to bump into me in the street, recognise we were soulmates and abandon both of our lives to run off together.

If that's not going to happen I don't care whether he's straight or gay.
(My very camp hairdresser was similarly heartbroken when Hugh Jackman left his wife "for another bloody woman! How is he not gay?! He's supposed to marry me!")

I agree, I think the list has somewhat deteriorated since it started, both lists in fact. There's an odd conversation on the Women thread, comparing royal family members, when not one of them could hold a candle to Lauren Bacall or Hedy Lamarr, in my opinion.

Harrison Ford seems to be very popular. I lean still towards my mid-20s crushes, I guess (Eddie Vedder and Antonio Banderas), but most of them really pale in comparison to a lot of the very early film stars, I think.

Harrison Ford has been my movie star crush for decades. Newman is gorgeous but just a bit too perfect. However, Hugh Jackman comes pretty close.

Has anyone seen Taylor Tomlinson's routine about seeing Hugh Jackman on Broadway? It creases me up.
