Feminist one line retorts please

Recently started dating a guy with right wing views. It probably won’t last, but I really, really fancy him so letting it run for the moment. (What is it about fancying the very type of men who form the group we know are the problem?! For another thread perhaps.)

He is intelligent, powerful, has the chat, body, sports car and beautiful clothes, old school attentive, is very very sexy etc. But, he comes off with things like “feminism has achieved everything it set out to” and “women are guilty of abusing men just as much as men abuse women”.

I know these things not to be true but I feel a bit tongue tied with him. And I don’t really want to delve into a deeply passion killing, university seminar-type discussion with him. I’d like a few short, pithy lines to deploy instead.

Can you suggest a few? And yes I know I should run a mile, but honestly if you saw him you’d know why I don’t want to atm!

Pithy lines won't get you anywhere. You can ignore it, tell him he's talking rubbish, or have the proper discussion. There no 'gotcha' quip that will change his mind.

OP you're being a bit feeble minded. If he had a clapped out Ford and a few teeth missing you wouldn't give him a second glance because his views are awful. He's a walking red flag.

If you can be bothered arguing with him - I learnt years ago not to wrestle with a pig - you can quote crime statistics:

Ask him why, if we live in a feminist eutopia, one in four women will experience abuse and a conservative one in three will be sexually assaulted. Ask him why two women a week on average are murdered by a partner and many more are disabled or commit suicide. Ask him why men can rape with impunity because our judicial system has failed women.

I could go on but I'd be wasting my breath.

I think you have to begin by deciding what feminism even is. The media is constantly redefining feminism depending on the agenda they are pushing. For example when I was young feminists were anti pornography and prostitution. Now apparently these things are empowering and sex positive. So if you start discussing other areas you might find your views align more than you think.

Ok, ok, I know you are all right and his views are neanderthal. But he is in the majority of men who, while not perpetrating direct abuse of women, either don’t believe there’s a problem or simply don’t care. You may well have one under your own roof as they often hide it well.

Well. Based on his two statements.
Feminism may have achieved a lot but only for some women in some countries some of the time. My retort would be ‘tell that to the next Afghan woman you meet’.
Women abuse men as much as men abuse women? ‘Men get upset by women yes but not murdered’.
You just need to ask him what he actually thinks feminism is. My usual one liner is to say ‘I assume everyone I meet is a feminist otherwise I’d like to know what rights they think women shouldn’t have.’

I might have felt like tackling this type of guy back in the day. I'm too tired of it all now.

My approach would likely have centered on defining my own feminism ie women supporting women, which he won't like. Then ask how men support men, define positive masculinity etc. Depending on if he's US/UK, you could expand on what women are to him. Much of the US conservative commentary is flawed: they want a submissive SAH wife but then hate when a women asks a date what his salary is or a girlfriend that won't pay her way. I would get him to expand on his views and point out the inevitable flaws. Get him talking and justifying. He knows what men are, he's interacted with them everyday of his life. If he had a girl he would warn her and seek to protect her from teen boys/men as she grew up. He knows. They all know.

The OP has made it very clear that she doesn’t want a ‘passion-killing, university seminar’ discussion in which she actually demonstrates the inaccuracy of his ideas, though. I think she imagines herself saying something witty and flicking her hair, and Mr Misogynist Sportscar will be overcome and bend her doggy-style over the sofa as she’s still saying ‘You’re not really oppressed, you know’.
