Biden has endorsed Harris to run for president. I don't believe she's very popular but it would be amazing to have a female president.

The USA was ready to, and did, vote for a female President in 2016, when Hillary Clinton won the greater number of votes (though not the Presidency, due to the complicated electoral college).

Electoral college plus Russia.

Which is not America, it's just 3 cities.

It will be Hilary Clinton

Because that went really well last time!

CaveMum · 21/07/2024 22:28

Potential running mates being talked about:

Gavin Newsom
Josh Shapiro
Pete Buttigieg
Gretchen Whitmer
Roy Cooper
Andy Beshear

Why? She's great but she's not a politician.

She’s smart, capable, personable and can command a room. Plus she’d kick Donald’s shiny orange arse all over the stage in a debate.

Turophilic · 21/07/2024 22:40

CaveMum · 21/07/2024 20:58

I wish Michelle Obama would run!

(I know she’s ruled out a political career, but a girl can dream!)

I don't - I read her memoir and WOW does she loathe politics! Really can't stand any of it.
I wouldn't wish that shitshow on such a marvellous person.

cupcaske123 · 21/07/2024 20:26

She's very unpopular in the polls although she polls well with people of colour and younger voters. Biden gave her a couple of projects as VP that she hasn't really been very successful at. She has quite a low profile and is trusted on abortion but not the big hitters like immigration and foreign policy. There has also been some ridicule of her such as her awkward laughter.

This one keeps hanging about but it's not really true. Her net favourables are about the same as Trump's but she has about the double the number of "don't knows" suggesting her numbers are softer in either direction than his.

I always got the feeling Biden gave her tough gigs/didn't allow her much chance to shine as he didn't want her to succeed too much to avoid exactly this situation and pressure, only during the primary season.

For the democrats to win they don’t need to win over left wing liberals, they need to win over the floating voters who are currently leaning to Trump. There is no way they are going to be persuaded by Harris.

This is it.

Why would someone who’s considering Trump go for a WOMAN of COLOUR. Exactly. Not going to work is it. Sad days .

MrGHardy · 21/07/2024 22:43

Not a bad move, in polling women were already heavily favouring Biden, I can only imagine that lead will extend if they're voting for a woman, not a senile old man.

There's a bit more to being President. I can't imagine why she'd give up her life now to go back to the WH.

MathiasBroucek · 21/07/2024 22:54

The problem with Kamala is not her gender... She's just not that impressive (more Liz Truss than Margaret Thatcher or Angela Merkel)

She is not remotely like Liz Truss. Why can't she be Kamala Harris? I dont think either Thatcher or Merkel would last 5 minutes in American politics.

I agree she’s also a bit forgettable but her sex should not be underestimated. I don’t think people will see her as a president. I mean Trump won over Hilary Clinton so…

Brokenpebbles · 21/07/2024 23:01

How about Gretchen Whitmer as the first female president?

ZenNudist · 21/07/2024 23:24

They need a white male not too left wing candidate. Trump would be on trouble then because apart from all the crazies there are a lot of people who don't like him. They will struggle to chip at Trumps base with a woman or non-white. Arguablya black man could win but a black woman has no chance.

OneWorldly4 · 21/07/2024 23:33

cupcaske123 · 21/07/2024 20:42

The Democrats have a convention in August where delegates will pick a new presidential candidate. They may not pick Harris.

What are people's problem with Kamala? Too brown?

Too daft.

USA is not ready to vote in a female president. I was somewhat hoping Biden would step down some time during his tenure as president to force a female on them, alas, that didn't happen.

Odd given that the polling reports have the only Democrat candidates able to beat Trump as Michelle Obama and rather surprisingly Hilary Clinton and ahead of any male alternatives - all of which would lose against Trump.

OneWorldly4 · 21/07/2024 23:47

Aquamarine1029 · 21/07/2024 23:39

Too daft.

So too brown?

Why don't people just admit it?

1dayatatime · 21/07/2024 23:50

@OneWorldly4

"What are people's problem with Kamala? Too brown?"

Why does the left always have to bring race into the equation.

The problem with Harris has nothing to do with her skin colour but because she has a reputation of being difficult to work with (high numbers of VP staff leaving because of her) and a reputation for not actually doing much or delivering anything in her time in office.

If race was an issue as the left always imply, then why is the only possible candidate with a chance of beating Trump, Michelle Obama??

katebushh · 21/07/2024 23:55

I think she could be great. Trump is owned by big media, of course he has constant brilliant PR and she has diddly squat, wake up do.

StaunchMomma · 22/07/2024 00:07

I like her a lot but it doesn't seem like Biden let her take much responsibility throughout his presidency. We certainly haven't seen much of her on the International stage.

Plus the US has never had a female president.

I'd love to see her take that orange twat, though!

I hate that this is true.

1dayatatime · 22/07/2024 00:10

@OneWorldly4

"So too brown?

No just ineffective but the left always sees skin colour before anything else.

For example would you say Rishi Sunak failed to get re elected as PM because of his skin colour or because the country was fed up with the Tories. Would you say that Liz Truss was forced to resign because of inherent sexism in media and Tory party or was it because she was just shit at her job.

I'm really starting to think that the biggest barrier to racial equality is now coming from the left and the obsession of seeing every thing through the prism of skin colour.

1dayatatime · 22/07/2024 00:13

@ZenNudist

"Arguablya black man could win but a black woman has no chance"

Explain then why the democratic possibility that has by far the strongest chance by the pollsters of beating Trump is a black woman - Michelle Obama.
