The Lancet, that well known bastion of Hamas sympathisers, disagrees that casualty numbers are deliberately inflated. Satellite imges show the scale of the devastation clearly. I do not understand why people on this thread feel the need to engage in denigrating the deaths on the Palestinian side, as if those lower numbers somehow change what was done to Israeli civilians. It's as if people here that two wrongs do in fact make a right.

I also don't understand why self professed feminists seem to have so little sympathy for women who are not Israeli. There is no side of the angels in this war. Hamas started it, they are evil, monstrous, call them what you will and I'll agree. But stop pretending Israel are any better right now.

@Ofcourseshecan the International Court of Justice disagrees, they think there are grounds for prosecuting for the crime of genocide. It doesn't have to be identical to the Holocaust to be a genocide.

The Nazis made a genuine attempt at genocide by trying to exterminate the Jews by the Nazis in the 1930s and 1940s. And to give another often-misused word to the right people: the Nazis were genuine fascists.

This doesn't mean that is the only definition of genocide or that any of the marginalised groups then have free reign in future to do whatever to other groups.

I'm not derailing. The two topics are very much related. Because Israel is making sure of that, to ensure that it convinces everyone who has had to deal with SA (and let's face it that's most of us) can understand and accept the mass punishment of an entire people.

Zionism originated as a socialist endeavour and that is why I became one many years ago. Israel is home to many different ethnicities from Russian to Ethiopian, it's founding principle being that one is Jewish. Unlike Gaza for example it holds regular elections and Muslims get elected to the Knesset. Sadly over recent years politics have turned further and further to the Right, just as is happening in the US and certain European countries, and massively so in Russia ruled by a despot.
Many Jews (similar in number to indigenous Arabs living in the mandate at the time) were displaced from their homes on Middle Eastern countries when Arab armies invaded in 1948. Unlike those displaced people left to live in refugee camps in Lebanon and Jordan, the displaced Jews were taken in by Israel as were thousands of displaced European Jews who survived but lost everything in the Holocaust and were not welcome in other countries at the end of WW2.

Pasta Bombing the tunnels is a targeted attack. The fact that entrances to hundreds of miles of underground tunnels are in homes, schools, hospitals etc illustrates that Hamas cares nothing for the people of Gaza and their only objective is to destroy Israel.

Much of the levant is multicultural and multiethnic. So was Palestine before apartheid. Palestinian Jews lived very happily beside Muslims and Christians.

It is fact that Arab armies from Egypt, Transjordan, Syria and Iraq invaded the fledgling state of Israel in May 1948. The indigenous population of Arabs including Druze and Bedouin as well as Christians and Jews who were living there, was told to leave and they could return after the war was win by the Arabs. Needless to say they didn't win.

There is NO apartheid in Israel. It matters not what race or religion you are: everyone uses the same buses, sit on the same benches, attend the same schools and hospitals, swim in the same sea can vote etc. Nothing like South Africa as it once was, nor America.
