Conscription for women

I’ve just read what the head of Army has announced on DM that it’s likely conscription is to return if the conflict with Russia escalates. Reading up on it and asking some people who I believe are in the know they seem to think this might be first war where women will be expected to fight on the front line. I’m going to be honest this terrifies me is anyone else ready to die in a ditch in Russia somewhere? I thought these days were over but apparently even with atom bombs we still have to duke it out the old fashioned way.

I would fail the drugs test anyway.

I have an edible now and again.

MyopicBunny · 24/01/2024 21:02

I asked you if you think women are not disadvantaged by the fact that we can get pregnant and you didn't answer 🤷🏻‍♀️ @Hatenewyear

You think that equality means that everyone should be expected to do the same thing which is rubbish.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 24/01/2024 21:02

Oh its Not bravado but i am not fighting for a country that i am embarrassed to belong to .

Are you embarrassed enough to immigrate?
Or is that too much effort?

Well sod equality laws then, we are either equal or we aren't. Why should my sons be expected to risk their lives purely because they are men? Maybe this is the test about if we really want to be treated as equal or not.

Um. Equality does not mean that everyone is expected to do exactly the same things as each other - surely you can see that?. It's about fairness and a level playing field. Men are physically taller, stronger than women and can withstand the demands of a war more effectively. They don't have babies. Their bodies are more resilient. That's a fact.

Some women are taller and stronger than some men. Maybe they could invent something like medicals to see what people would be suited to? I'm old enough to know people who were conscripted and surprise surprise they didn't all do the same thing. One man I know worked in the stores. Do you seriously think a woman couldn't work in the stores i.e. a warehouse because I've got news for you and women actually do that.

My friends mother was a nurse in WWII, she served overseas.

It is all excuses because you'd rather not do it, well surprise surprise lots of men don't want to die defending you.

To answer your very poor argument - some women will use pregnancy and children as a disadvantage whereas some will just get on with it!

MyopicBunny · 24/01/2024 21:05

I think PP was suggesting that conscripted women would use pregnancy as a get out of jail, not rape! You really are starting to sound very silly.

And you are starting to sound personal because you can't cope that I don't see things the same way as you.

You don't understand my post. Clearly, my point is that if you get raped, pregnancy can be a consequence of that. A consequence that could be utilised by enemies.

Noseyoldcow · 24/01/2024 21:06

Well, based upon equality laws, if men are being called up, then women should be too. AFAIK, women were called up in the last wars, weren't they? Not as soldiers, but as munitions worker, land girls etc.
Anyway, whatever the sex/gender of the call up seems to me an awful lot of people due to ill health/mental issues/ autism and the like will be excused service anyway.

Some women are taller and stronger than some men.
That's a logical fallacy. It's like not accepting that most sex offenders are men.

And you're saying I'm a misogynist?

before i went off for my basic training i was working in a pub. One of the women who came in every evening for a half with her husband had been in the only cohort of women actually conscripted into the ATS (as it was then). She told me some tales! And wrote to me for a while I'd passed out.

I must say that I'm disappointed in all the "I'd hide" "they'd have to shoot me". All the nice parts of living in a relatively quiet, and rich part of the world, but when the brown stuff hits the air-con? meh.

MyopicBunny · 24/01/2024 21:15

The arguments that I have made are that

  1. Women are generally physically less tough than men
  1. The fact that women can get pregnant puts them at a disadvantage, generally. And is one of the main reasons why women CAN be oppressed,

Neither of those things is a weak argument. Nor is either of those things wrong.

BunniesRUs · 24/01/2024 21:16

I love this thread. Reveals how much Brits really care about their country!

gocompare · 24/01/2024 21:17

If things became that dire we would all have to muck in as they did for the world wars.

Men or women, we would all have to because we would have no other choice.

Women on the front line. We do have the risk of rape and getting pregnant. For that reason it's unlikely women would be actual front line unless specifically requested. However we are a risk to our male and female colleagues because of our sex.

Army in my experience and all forces are focused on their squadron, their group who they are on tactical operations with. I don't know many men who wouldn't do anything they could to stop a member of their squad being assaulted or raped. Man or women.

Other men will rely on that to get what they want. Ie if you give me this info or do what I am asking I won't rape your colleague.

Vile. But we know it's a weapon and it's used as such.

BarelyLiterate · 24/01/2024 21:17

All together now, sisters!

“What do we want?”
“Equality!”
”When do we want it?”
”Er, only when it suits us, thanks… And definitely not if it entails getting shot at, which sounds horrid. So we’ll leave that to the men.”

MyopicBunny · 24/01/2024 21:19

In recent years, the UK has become a racist shit hole with a government that despises the citizens it is supposed to serve. Is it any wonder they aren't massively keen to die for the arseholes who won't be the ones who end up dying?

MyopicBunny · 24/01/2024 21:20

Yes, that too.

pavillion1 · 24/01/2024 21:21

Can you say you love Britain?
Do you think the millions who sacrificed their lives in the two world wars would be proud of where we are now .
probably turning in their graves .

Mambo19866 · 24/01/2024 21:22

MyopicBunny · 24/01/2024 20:56

We don't have to get pregnant although I guess there would be loads of young women trying to get pregnant if conscription happens. That will be there get out of jail free card.

Rape is a weapon of war unfortunately. Get out of jail free card? Are you for real?

Can I just ask is getting raped worse than what happens during war to men? They don’t just get shot. I watched ww2 interviews from dday vets on YouTube and just one example was watching his friend getting stabbed over and over again in the face until he died another watched his friends gets burned alive. Can you explain what makes rape worse than these things? And if it doesn’t then it’s not a very good excuse why women shouldn’t be on the front line.

well said

Hereforthebunfights · 24/01/2024 21:26

Or, and hear me out. It's possible to be a feminist and believe that no one should be conscripted.

MyopicBunny · 24/01/2024 21:30

@Mambo19866 it's not about anyone thinking that it's more ok for men to be tortured than women. People have explained multiple times on the thread why women are generally less suited to war than men are. And why rape is used as an attack (not just on the individual).

War is wrong in the bloody first place.

I agree and I posted earlier saying I had done my stint but if the shit hit the fan of course I'd be called up depending on age.

The problem we have now is that the government and tabloids have done such a good job on us all about benefit bashing and the working class, poor , rich, middle class divide, we are no longer united. We are all in fighting with each other.

There would be such a massive uproar about conscription and who qualifies etc and people who get to skip it for whatever reason because of who they are related to etc.

I think you would see an uprising or some sort of civil war (not sure what the correct term is) before we even got to that point.

Mambo19866 · 24/01/2024 21:34

There seems to be a lot of cognitive dissonance on this thread.
