Conscription for women

I’ve just read what the head of Army has announced on DM that it’s likely conscription is to return if the conflict with Russia escalates. Reading up on it and asking some people who I believe are in the know they seem to think this might be first war where women will be expected to fight on the front line. I’m going to be honest this terrifies me is anyone else ready to die in a ditch in Russia somewhere? I thought these days were over but apparently even with atom bombs we still have to duke it out the old fashioned way.

Yes women are physically weaker. Of course. But that's why equality laws are in place.
Disabled people are also equal to all others but not necessarily able to walk. That's not ableism.

2 . Look at conscription in other countries to see how it might work

2b. Israel - men and women
3 . Look at history - your sons (and daughters) may choose to volunteer as people did in huge numbers both before and alongside conscription in the Second World War.
4 . Warfare has changed significantly since then. Fewer people on the frontline and both men and women are considered capable of operating a drone.

I know in my case our family would pool our resources and escape to a country as far from Europe as possible with no dogs in the fight.. That’s privilege though. Not everyone could do that.
I think it’s highly unlikely it’ll come to that. There’ll be secret operations going on left right and centre among nato and they’d probably be able to contain it all away from our soil. The only true threat being if the nutcase in Russia starts lobbing nukes. In which case there’s no point in fighting anyway.. You’ve either made it to the other side of the world or you’re ash anyway. I wouldn’t under any circumstances be willing to fight, I’d be useless anyway, I wouldn’t allow my boys to go either though. It’s not our quarrel.

Who said anything about lifting weights. This is about conscription (not that it will happen). There are many more AF jobs that women can do other than front line infantry but you’re arguing they shouldn’t even have to join because of their uterus! Special treatment because of their sex. I was a woman in a sexist Navy for 14 years. I know misogyny when I see it and I also know those who fought for equality really meant it - not some feeble excuse and pathetic argument of why the women should be treated differently.

What I am saying is that women can be pregnant in the AF, they can have children and still serve! They can still be conscripted - are you saying they can’t? Should we stop women joining up at all in case it harms their reproductive ability with all those nasty big guns?

It won't happen in my opinion. It's scare mongering so that whatever their next best solution seems like a good one.

It's a scare tactic to gain acceptance to whatever fucking plan they have that the public will reject so that the lesser option (the plan all along) is agreed with.

I am not sure if you are aware of the brutality of the Russian soldiers which was reported at the beginning of the Ukraine war.

I am not saying that women can't ever be soldiers or that there aren't other roles for them than front line combat. I'm saying that the fact women can get pregnant makes them more vulnerable than men.

Shooting at dawn was for desertion. And if you haven't joined up you're not subject to martial law so shooting at dawn wouldn't apply to you. And shooting at dawn was last used (as far as I can find) in WW1. So your bravado is uncalled for.

It sounds bonkers but if there is conscription of men, why shouldn't there be conscription of women too?

During WW2 women were conscripted (not into frontline units, although nurses, medics, ambulance drivers and the SOE were frontline effectively) into the land army, the lumberjacks and so on.

We enjoy the benefits of citizenship during peacetime, is it too much to ask to step up when it all goes pear shaped? or should men just suck that up?

Definitely will not happen. Simply scare mongering. Conscripts make terrible soldiers. One professional soldier who's there willingly is more effective than 10 conscripts. Conscription is also unnecessary. There are more people trying to sign up for the forces than the military have budget to take on. If as part of preparation for potential war the military budget is increased they will have no trouble recruiting the people they need without resorting to conscription.

You know nothing about the AF and just keep bleating on about being pregnant - news flash you can be pregnant in the AF now! I served when women weren’t allowed at sea and the powers gave the same weak argument you’re peddling to try and stop it. Fortunately more intelligent and feminist women fought and fought and won! Only for fools to argue they shouldn’t have bothered as they like to use babies and pregnancy as the excuse to get out of the less glamorous side.
